Paul Beesley on Alan Biggs Show

I've got bigger fish to be frying than Paul Beesley today. Everyone on here is entitled to their own opinions (no matter how wrong & misguided I find them ;) ), but I'm not going to let myself be dragged into this maelstrom of misinformation.

Basham certainly isn't this team's Beesley. Basham is on a different level as a footballer.

I'm not sure what spheres of industry & employment posters on here move in or what their personal levels of success are, but if I google my real name, followed by the words "sh*t" or "useless" or "talentless"; I don't get any search results. Paul Beesley does, so he's obviously a mar-mite type of player, there's 6 or so posters on here that seem to rate him and the rest of the known world who don't.

As much as I like Bassett and that period, we had some dross as players. They always gave 100%, but some were technically limited, to the point of dropping out of the game after leaving us. The collective value of Bassett's teams were considerably more than the sum of their parts. Paul Beesley played 168 times for us in that period, John Gannon played 174, Paul Rogers played 126, Jamie Hoyland played 89 and Andy Scott played 75 games. After a few IPA's I don't get misty eyed & reminisce about any of those five.

I'm not trying to be controversial, but i honestly didn't/don't rate PB, and remember Gayle and Tuttle as better players. However, I'll retract the 'w*nkstain' comment, he was a better player than that.

If I were given the choice of NM or PB at their pomp to have as a squad player this season, I'd choose NM as a replacement for JL.

Unless PB had a habit of fouling up against Sunderland, and has an extensive portfolio to chose from, the foul up I was referring to was the 0-2 loss in November 1990 at BDTBL. My memory isn't what it used to be, but I remember him twice being given the ball in space about 20 yards out, not knowing what to do with it, turning to face the kop, MG nipping in, having a 1 v. 1 and scoring. In fact the 2nd time is etched on my brain, the sheer horror of the kop on the 2nd occasion as he did the same thing again, with the same consequence, within 5 minutes.

I think the reason he went to Man City had something to do with City being stupid at the time and their manager being a former manager of PB's that liked him.

Yep it was Frank Clark who signed him at Citeh, who was his boss st Orient. A Citeh mate of mine put Beesley and Vonk in his worse XI

Beez was a bit shit yes, but that's never put us off loving players though has it?? He was wholehearted and wouldn't make out he was the best himself, so probably doesn't need us to point it out.

He was in the grand tradition of Sir Bob, not great but made the best of it, like all of Bassett's lot did- they couldn't play like what we're watching now but was a great time to be a Blade.

I remember Beez being bloody hard, great in the air, and possessor of a hoof that dislodged several tiles on the old John Street roof in our first season back up. Bit of a Shaun Murphy but tougher

That’s a brilliant discription.....exactly my thoughts.....he was a bit shit but he had that Basham “give 100% never say die “quality.
I always appreciate these types and would personally rather have limited players giving 100% instead of talented mercenary players who couldn’t give a toss. We had a few of those under Bassett and that’s what made his team build a big bond with the fans.

Another one to add to the list of Gayle, Gannon, and Hoyland. All who get called wank and listed amongst our worst players ever by a few.

Seeing as I've been watching us for nearly 40 years all those played in the most successful team I've ever seen.

We're all thoroughly enjoying it these days and the style of play, but when this team finish in the top 10 of the PL and regularly turn over the big boys (apart from Arsenal :p) then maybe we can talk again.

People have different opinions on players, that I accept, but quite why some feel the need to call these players awful derogatory names is way beyond my understanding of human nature.
Would they call Paul Beesley a wankstain to his face? I very much doubt it....
Beez would deal with it appropriately I reckon

Biggs will like talking to Beesley as he’s from an era which Biggs understands and was perhaps not a bad journalist back then

If you are honestly comparing Beesley with Montgomery, then god help you. I try and remain positive about most players that put on the red & white shirt, but Beesley was absolute toss. He was cut slack my managers because he was left footed, and could give balance to a CB pairing. He was one of the most technically limited players we've had play for us in recent times, and he was stupid to boot, as was shown in the Sunderland match. To drop one back pass short to MG is bad enough, to replicate it a minute later sums him up. People on here denigrate Jake Wright, but he's twice the player Beesley was, an absolute wank stain of a player.

Marco Gabbiadini did. In fact he made him have kittens! I’ve never seen Beesley so bad as he was that day. Anyone remember that game v Sunderland at home when Gabbiadini ripped him a new one on several occasions?

So one bad game makes him shit?

What do you think of Fleck and Norwood following their shambolic performances against Brum?

I retracted that comment in post #32, as after considering it harsh.

My comment was based on his performance as a footballer for the club I support both with time and money. A player who I never rated and who has been called a lot worse, by many more than me over the years at different clubs he's played at. It is a football forum and a place for emotive talk about the game and the club, so slack should be given. But I take your point, and if you or any others who didn't like my comment PM the Mods on here, I'll quite happily take a ban or have the offending comment edited. :)

No, not at all.

I mentioned it as it my abiding memory of him, and to me (rightly or wrongly) sums him up. I suspect that i watched him in 75% of his games for us, but when his name is mentioned, it's the first thing I remember about him. Just as if any other United player's name is mentioned. The collective is remembered in the singular. I didn't rate him, he may have been a trier, but he was limited as a player, he'd get stuck in, but his distribution was poor and his touch unpredictable. As if he was constantly operating at the very edges of his abilities. It appears to be a view shared by supporters of both Leeds & Man City. He may have been highly thought of at Wigan and Orient, but they were both old 3rd division clubs at the time he played for them, and he quickly stepped up to the old 1st division.

It appears that there are sub sets of United players who people can freely criticise on here, without the need for evidence or reason, and those that you cannot, even though evidence and reason is produced.

As it happens it's the first thing I always remember about him too but whilst he always had the potential for a right cock up in him overall I thought he was pretty decent.

Come on get off that fence, say what you think.

Yeh, I saw your retraction and read with interest your justification about the comments.
I just don't get name calling on a football forum, that's all.
My rule of thumb is if you wouldn't say it to the face, don't write it.
I'm certainly not offended by it but thought it worthy of reply.

I don’t yearn for Beez but think some credit is due for playing top flight footy for the period that he did. I remember that him and Gayle struck a decent partnership for a time. Neither were footballing centre halves but pretty effective stoppers in a team that worked on the premise that neither tried to take more than two touches. He was competitive and had a battling attitude. He was always prone to making an error, as is anyone, but especially as he was probably playing at a higher level than many thought he could. Like most of the Bassett team.

What was the Whitehurst story? I haven’t got time to watch it but love a Whitehurst story.

Beez and Whitehurst were coming back from injury and they had an U23 game at Elland Road
Beez always used to look at the opposition team sheet to see who they would be up against - to see if it would be a tough game.
Was sure that others would be the same.
Big John McCrerrand (sp?) was in the Leeds side for that ressy game and teams used to come out of the tunnel together back then.
Billy said to John, "you alright, then, John?"
"Yes, Billy." was the smiling reply.
To which Billy grinned and said, "That's good. Have you brought your gum shield with you tonight?"
Beez said that John McCrerrand's face just went pale.

I don't think anyone was saying he was shit. He was decent at the lower levels he played at, but error prone and a bag of nerves at times.

Had a mistake or two in him, and often seemed to kick the ground before he kicked the ball, but him and Gayle did the job asked of them. But limited but hardworking player, and was a solid part of a great time being a Blade. We signed him from the 3rd division, so he jumped up two divisions, and our player of the season in 1993. Made the most of himself. So, big respect, PB!

Please don't mention Gannon in the same sentence as Jamie and Brian please, it will give me nightmares.
