I thought it was going to take a while for the new system to click anyway, but given the weaknesses we have at the back and the reliance on loans I think we might start quite slowly. I certainly can't see us keeping a clean sheet for a bit. Personally, I'd be surprised if we're top half by the end of September. We have some very tricky fixtures:

Bristol City (H)
Birmingham (A) Cup
Swansea (A)
Millwall (H)
Boro (A)
Ipswich (A)
Charlton (H)
Oxford (A)
Southampton (H)

I'm confident it will pick up but I think we really need to be patient with this new chapter in our history.

This feel like Slav again

Handing the manager only half the tools to do the job and being surprised when he fails

Being honest with the way wilder left Selles isn’t going to get the benefit of the doubt. If we start slowly because we have zero centre backs he’s going to bear the brunt from the fans.

He’ll be hounded out before he’s had a chance to show what he can do.

Not long ago we and Forest were bottom of the Championship: both made the play offs.

Think Sellers needs to be given a chance. He can only work with what’s he got. Suspect the owners don’t see promotion as the target this year.
Suspect we will see games where there are plenty of goals at both ends. Most certainly going to be different from last year

1000 % correct your post seems ,I think slav had better players to if being honest!

We have sold a 6'7" , a 6'5" and a 6'3".

We've no height left in the team , let alone the defence.

We are wide open to aerial attack by any average Championship side.

The defence has no commanding leader and looks VERY weak on paper.

Does Selles think we will have 100% possession of the football ?

We are utterly desperate for two CBs so that Binden can be understudy and Robbo can get fucked off out of the door like any normal elderly mediocre player who was given a contract of only 12 months a year ago.

For a club that gets rid of players who come to the last year of their contract , we have sold 3 decent ones and kept the shit one.

WTF is going on ?

I keep coming around to the view that COH have not invested all that money in buying the Club from the Prince to sit back and let us slip back to a mid Championship side (with ultimately no parachute funds).

They have a different transfer strategy that looks abroad for value (& given Brexit rules) these are frustrating for our fans in terms of delays but personally I feel sure that transfer sales WILL be reinvested in Premier League squad loanees and foreign purchases that have an upside.

Keep the faith.

I think Bindon ( 6’3”) was brought in to replace Anel, as they knew he’d be off…

I think you are spot on. When the Board talks about patience, I interpret that as a few dodgy days out in the early months of the season, when our efforts to fully embed a new system get found out as a work in progress, and not as settling for Championship mediocrity this season.I don’t believe that the Board think that promotion is not important this season, in fact I think it will be the objective. I cling to the belief that this is why players are slow in coming in. If we want to go better than last season, then we need a few top class signings to complete what is already a strong squad. The people we need will in the main be of a quality that we can’t afford to buy, or that is not for sale, ie Premier League loanees. These players will be on the minds of Premier League managers right up to the brink of squad selection, and if offered on loan they will not be short of suitors, and so business will get done late.
Our stated ambition is to become an established Premier League team. Every season that we stay in the Championship makes that task even more difficult. The financial gap grows wider and wider.

I predict our typical cup exit, after which Brum fans will convinced they’re winning the lot and our set will be convinced we’re relegated.

I don’t want to get all Norwich about it but I just want to see some decent football for a bit. Some goals would be nice. If we can string a play off push together the fine.

Why ruin it with promotion?

Before the window closes, it has to be 2 CB's, 1 RB, 1 RW & a ST.

We are desperate defensively, especially with the style of play implemented over pre-season. It's too open, we'll concede a lot more than last year, granted it's been exciting going forward!

The list of fixtures from above, hopefully what we see as an XI v Bristol & what we'll have/ see v Ipswich is much improved...

Whats amazing about the championship is every game is winnable for either team. That list of fixtures does look tricky, but would argue if you did that for any section of the season, they would look just as tricky.

Personally, I am all about direction of travel. If we aren't in top half, but we can see the players learning the expectations, seeing the team being competitive, I will be pleased.

If we see us getting beaten continuously with the same mistakes being made, lack of understanding amongst the players and no improvement, thats when people will get impatient.

6'7"?! If that's Souttar, he missed half of last season.

Departed since the play off:
Moore 1.96m / 6'5"
Ahmedhodzic 1.92m / 6'4"
Souza 1.87m / 6'2"
Brereton Díaz 1.85m / 6'1"
Brewster 1.80m / 5'11"
Clarke 1.80m / 5'11"
Choudhury 1.78m / 5'10"
Rak-Sakyi 1.78m / 5'10"

Of those, only Souza and Ahmedhodzic were first choice and, surprise surprise, both have been replaced (below):

New additions to the first team:
Bindon 1.91m / 6'3" (replaces Ahmedhodzic)
Oné 1.88m* / 6'2" (replaces Moore?)
Soumaré 1.85m / 6'1" (replaces Souza)
Polendakov 1.79m / 5'10"
Barry 1.73m / 5'8"

*Oné looks taller than this but it's what Google gave me. Wikipedia, somewhat laughably, has him at 1.75m (5'9"). He was nowhere near the first team by the end of the season.

Why on earth do we need to be patient? What club is happy going in to a new season knowing they are nowhere near as good as they were last year and apparently that’s ok!

You don’t need to be patient. That’s entirely up to you. You would probably find that your life would be better and happier if you were, though.

Most of us have spent all our Sheffield United supporting life being “patient” as we build towards the mythical future that never comes.
Life is much better if you set more realistic expectations and thoroughly enjoy the moments when you surpass them. The reality is that we’ve enjoyed some very good moments over the past decade or so. Don’t get me wrong, some mega disappointments too. But if you spend your life waiting for some “mythical future” you’ll only be disappointed. It’s the reason why sets of all fans are rarely happy with their lot, always believing they’ve accepted a life of failure by supporting anyone from Arsenal through to Notts County.

I really don’t know what to expect from this season. But I do think Selles will need a bit of time. Not least because we’ve just sold two strong first teamers on the eve of the season, in addition to losing one of our best players from last year earlier in the window. I’d hope that if we’re mid-table by the Autumn, fans aren’t completely beside themselves, but I think at a bare minimum we should be expecting that we’ll be competing for the playoffs at the end of the season. Otherwise, subject to redeeming factors such as a huge spate of injuries or incredibly positive signs of having turned a corner later in the season which points to a brighter future, it’s very fair to be disappointed. And annoyance at having to show patience again too.

Going into Saturdays game has got the feel of the Palace home game at the start of the season a couple of years ago after we’d lost players & not replaced them in time for the season KO .. Bindon partnered with either the calamities that are Robbo or RND doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence does it . The club knew Anel hadn’t extended his contract & was unlikely to so the option of of a club coming him to buy him in this window was always a strong possibility . We only mitigated this by bringing in a loanee CB when there was cash to spend since Souza’s departure ( to quote the club half of that available for reinvestment) .
Whichever way you look at it it was piss poor planning not having another in place for the season KO , more so with Robbo & RNDs injury record , a bit more foresight was required there in the summer ? ⚔️
