Noticeable how play-off-bound Walsall's starting eleven only had three in it over 26 years of age. Blades on the other hand only had two starting under 28 years old. ...

Even so, credit where credit's due. Very decent performance today, fully committed right through until the death & made a clearly decent side look very ordinary.

There is a pattern of play emerging (even if that pathway still needs opening up).

DCL keeps getting on the field, and let's be clear, those arguing to see more players like this should confirm they're happy with life in the third division, because they aren't anywhere near good enough right now.

Most revealing statement in this area recently was when he said Whiteman should've been training with the first team earlier in the season but there were too many pros at the club.

train with first team regularly
subs bench
game time
a start in a Cup match maybe
a start in a League game
encouragement - play without fear if failure
all the time looking closely at attitude and application
and development
watch and listen to Uncle Dean
(but don't watch too closely when he has the ball)
another start in a League game
rest - to relieve the physical and mental pressure
consistent starts
good performances
wins at home
draws away
promotion

:-)

Thing is, we don't know how good they're likely to be. And the only way to see them progress is by playing them more.

Got to say my heart sank when the codgers' starting line-up was announced. But, in fairness, it worked today - there was lots of energy, endeavour & heart out there. Just think at this stage though, with ZERO chance of making the play-offs, we'd be better off experimenting with more of the youths.

McGahey, as an example, was excellent after he came on today. He's far more confident that he used to be, going by that showing.

You judged that on appearances from 10 to 15 mins as sub and today about 5 mins appearance.

DCL is definitely one of our players now and for the future,

Adams should have been subbed after his 20min limit and DCLbrought on.
My suggestion to you is go watch him in training he runs rings round most of them.

I can wholeheartedly guarantee that a team of anything like the standard of DCL next season would be relegated spectacularly.

They at least have age in their sides, but you don't have to see me play to know that I'm shite.

I think DCL is trying too hard. Should've taken that shot instead of deferring to Billy.

The trick and shot at Southend showed his potential. Needs to simultaneously relax and pick up the pace and show his ability.

If every game is make or break then he'll never make it. Give him chances, let him fail, watch him come good.

It's a judgement call when he's had enough time in the first team, and you have to accept he's not going to make it but he's a long way off that at the moment.

I want out of England's third division, not to live in hope that players who look like Bambi on ice might progress through it.

You talk as if the few minutes we've seen of DCL so far represent the way he'll play for the entirety of his career. He's young, he's developing, he's having to play in front of 19,214(!!) people for the first time in his life.

If you were talking about the spectacular averageness of Dean Hammond you'd have a point. But DCL needs game time in meaningless games rather than 2 minute cameos. As does Whiteman. As does Reed.

If the Pathway For Youth looks like that, we might as well have a van and a bag of sweets while we're at it

But a team playing like he does in training would walk the Division with 100 points and 100 goals?

Give him a chance to translate that form in to the arena :-)

How many chances? I don't know.

You're right as it stands, but I do see a future high value sale in DCL. :)

I can talk about the spectacular averageness of Dean Hammond in one of numerous threads devoted to that.

You started this one presumably because you'd like to see more of players like DCL.

If the club are serious about experimenting with youth of this quality, they should make it clear now so that you and I can make alternate decisions about our season ticket purchases.

He may well be a great player in future. He's fucking miles off right now. Get him out on loan.

UTB
I agree. Other than flashes of quality from Adams, I think our younger players have been disappointing this season. DCL has been fortunate to get so much game time and desperately needs to work on his strength and aggression, as games just pass him by.

I don't care how old they are as long as they perform - and certainly don't think we should play youth for the sake of it.

They shall soon come to realise that no matter how much promise they show, they will always be binned alongside Adkins' clique of slow and ageing favourites.

Pathway for youth . Andy Crosby , age 43 , born Rotherham , knows the area and culture .

No spin , buzzword bingo . Talked sensible with conviction in the radio interviews .

Enjoyed his insight into the game .

Ready made replacement if required , or is it just the result , that's making me more relieved than happy .

Got to say , not really missed Adkins today in more ways than one , but sure he had a massive input

Exactly. Matt Done brought off with a minute or two to play. Does he give young Kelly a tokenistic (but highly meaningful for him) debut? No, he gives Martyn Woolford an appearance bonus.

Don't really want to be negative after a very good win. But certain problems do seem entrenched, despite what was an enjoyable afternoon.

You wouldn't seriously consider him because he talks well on the radio?

Don't get me wrong, there'll be thousands of numpties who would, but you know better than that! :)

I pray we don't make managerial choices based on their interview techniques.

He probably saw DCL again, and thought "fuck that" :)

To be honest I thought the announcement before the start that James Beattie was in attendance was a bit ominous (following on from Adkins' uncharacteristic missing of his media duties on Friday).

A vulture hovering in case we lost today & the crowd turned?

A tad harsh.

At the moment all he touches turns to ashes, the cremation ashes of a dead season, cremation ashes drifting noiselessly through the reflective silence of a once hope-filled stadium before settling as a shadow...a yard wide of the far post.

Alco , trying to keep putting some light into dark days , but fail .

Ought to be on the stage , it leaves in 5 minutes.

Even PeteBlade was lenient with me.

As they say I'll get me coat. Shit at jokes.
