Parking at Bury

There is a small car park at the ground, but i'd imagine thats out this Sat. Failing that we usually park on one of the nearby side roads and have never had a problem.

Or you can get the Metro and park anywhere along the line if it's easier or you want to go shopping in the morning (no sexist stereotyping intended!). The Metro runs all the way through from Alty.

I will be travelling from Huddersfield.

I ve never gone to Bury before. Any tips on best Metro to park at and ride in please will be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Get on the train Kenneth.

Easiest Metro station is Prestwich. Off at J17 of the M60, left onto Bury New Road, down there about 400 yards and left onto Fairfax Road and the station is down there on the right just before the bridge. The car park used to be free, that may have changed, I'll try and find out. It's 3 stops to Bury.

I thought I'd asked an easy question of my friend who lives locally, but it isn't that simple. There's a car park on the left on Fairfax Road which is free for two hours. There's a car park right opposite the Metro, Longfield precinct, which is free, but often full.

It hardly seems worth the cost and hassle of park and ride, it's an easy run down Bury New Road if you go right when you come off at J17, about 2 miles and start to look for side street parking anywhere after the BP garage.

Be careful near the ground. Apparently they have just started imposing parking restrictions on some roads. I spoke to someone at one of our companies in Bury (shame it isnt near the ground)

Trigger, the car park just on the left on fairfax road which is free for 2 hours - do you know if you can pay for longer or is it 2 hours maximum stay?

Having been to University in Salford, I lived in Halls for my 1st year near to Bury New Road/ Prestwich.

My local in the first year was a newly renovated pub called the 'Kersal'. We got to know the landlady pretty well (a middle aged, typical pleasant, but tough landlady) and she said she was getting the place back on its feet after a fire... naively we assumed it was some electrical fault or something, the locals seemed pleasant enough and chatted with us students.

We were told one night that the pub had featured on the "Cook Report" - Fame I thought! Like the Rovers Return. However, this thought was short lived. It had been burned down by a local group because they wouldn't pay the protection money. Which explained the newly renovated look.

One night we were sitting in the lounge (students were advised against going in the tap room) when 5 chaps in Berghaus jackets zipped up came in, a couple of them were carrying what I thought were rolled up magazines, perhaps they were part of a local model aircraft hobby group or restoring old cars (I'd seen lots of old cars on the nearby playing fields which had obviously been stripped down for restoration) or something.

We then heard a commotion emanating from the tap room, apparently they were having a disagreement with another local, I assumed he was a landscape gardener/ grounds man as they asked him politely for "grass" or perhaps it was "you're a f*cking grass".

The 5 chaps casually walked back through the lounge minutes later, but had discarded their magazines and were walking out with table legs... I thought to myself "how odd that they have a 5 legged table"

We gave it 10 mins and left!

My advice - stay as far away from the Salford end as possible, don't dream of drinking in Salford unless you know its ok, don't even consider parking in Salford, better to just pay for parking :)

Not a pleasant place.

Prestwich/ Bury seemed better though, they had a 24 Tescos with an openly advertised "singles night" every Tuesday.

Can we make this a regular consumer advice feature? "Swiss Says" or something?

Dear Swiss,

I've just got the chip pan on and the beef dripping is bubbling away nicely at 160 deg C. Should I trust the thermometer and put the chips in now or test the temperature with my face first?

You need to talk me through that one. Is the idea to impress your fellow shoppers with your purchases? Pop a packet of extra large johnnies on top of the Special Brew and microwave lasagne for one?

There is a P&D on Bury New Road where the Lloyds Bank is. It is £2.00 for 4 hours and a 2 min walk from Tram stop.

Cheers Trigger Blade!

Lloyd's Bank is on the corner of Bury New Road and Fairfax Road. I think the P&D that mobile is referring to is the same one I'm talking about.

Oh yeah, found it on google maps, cheers trigger once again!

Does anyone know if the car park on rectory lane will allow us to stay for around 4 hours?

Blimey, I wish I'd never started this.... to summarise the Prestwich parking options:-

a) Longfield precinct (the one you refer to as Rectory Lane) is free all day, but gets full
b) Fairfax Road P&D is free for up to two hours, or £2.50 if you're planning to stay longer than that
c) Bury New Road car park (which is actually on Fairfax Roadand I'd never noticed it before, right behind Lloyd's Bank, and presumbaly is called BNR to avoid confusion, though it confused me anyway) is £2 for up to four hours.

The big Tesco 24, which Swiss refers to, is just up the road towards J17 and you could park on there for free, it's a 5 minute max walk back to the Metro.

Ironically, I'm not even driving, parking, or taking the Metro, I'm being dropped off and picked up afterwards.

Having suggested the Metro in the first place, I should perhaps caution that Manure are at home at the same time tomorrow and hence their fans may fill the station car parks. I forgot until I drove past OT on the way home tonight. Sorry!

Surely people from London going to Old Trafford will use car parks in the south of the City.

Oof, just been told that the Tesco 24 isn't a soft touch and that there are clamping notices aimed at non-Tesco visiting parkers.

It's also very frosty in North Manchester, very sunny though, so fingers crossed.
