Kenny opts out of Republic duty

Paddy Kenny was involved in a late night brawl in November
Sheffield United goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has asked not to be considered for Republic of Ireland duty for the foreseeable future.

The Sheffield United goalkeeper has taken the decision for family reasons.

Last November the 28-year-old was involved in a late night brawl outside a curry restaurant and he has also experienced recent marital problems.

Shay Given is already out of next month's Euro 2008 qualifier against San Marino because of injury.

Kenny had his left eyebrow bitten off in the brawl in November which happened outside a curry house in Halifax.

That was shortly before Ireland's 5-0 Euro 2008 qualifying victory over San Marino at Lansdowne Road, a match for which he was not selected.

Staunton made clear at the time it was due to personal problems, and it later emerged Kenny was suffering marriage difficulties.

"As everybody knows, I have been through a troublesome time recently and I want to spend time with my family at every opportunity," said Kenny.

"I have asked to be released from international duty for the time being so I can do that."

Staunton is fully supportive of Kenny, stating: "Paddy has to put himself and his family first at a time like this and I fully respect his decision."

Kenny's withdrawal means that Staunton will turn to Brighton's Wayne Henderson or Barnsley's Nick Colgan for the game in the Serravalle Stadium on February 7.

Henderson started in the 1-1 draw against the Czech Republic in October when both Kenny and Given were ruled out because of injury.

Dont blame him really hasnt had much luck in goal for ireland.
