Paddy gone

Welcome. And congrats for being at the front of the phonebook. :)

Question is, do we want to pay SWFC any of our hard-earned? Wendyite's tell me Grant is as ropey on crosses as Paddy is, although he's a great shot stopper.

When given a choice, 9 out of 10 cats preferred shopping elsewhere...

I think he meant that grey haired bloke at Rotherham John.

Presty, if we unearthed another Dane Whitehouse, how long do you think he'd last under the current regime?
Five games?
The soul of the club has been royally flushed away. Young players our future? Just another load of bollocks from the club.

Nothing suprises me in football anymore. Money and loyalty aside, I will boo the money grabbing cnut next season. What goes around comes around, anybody remember a certain Martin Smith? Played in the nineties for us. I think he left us for the mighty huddersfield? for more wonga and then it all went tits up for both parties. Last I heard he was playing for Northampton.

Yes, I remember Martin Smith saying something along the lines of 'Huddersfield are a bigger club than United', 18 months later, Huddersfield are relegated to league one and we're finishing in the top 10 of the championship. 18 months after that, we're in 2 domestic cup semi finals and a play off final and he's playing Rushden and Diamonds. Paddy will be different though, warnock stands a good chance of taking QPR up this season.
However, the quote about 'owing United my career' was unfortunate considering what looks to be happening. Why does a player that seemed happy to be at the lane, signs a new contract, have such a change of heart in three months?

quite correct young man,i thought smithy was a legend in the making until the cash register started ringing,he did play for northhampton, then he went to darlington before finishing up in non league....... another one left to make it big !

You could take the opposite view. We could have fired Paddy for getting banned, and he could have moved to QPR for nothing. We could have chosen not to offer a new contract, and he could have moved to QPR for nothing. Instead we are getting £1m .

Its disappointing that his future doesn't lie here (I'm hearing that there is more to his decision than meets the eye, not money but changes to his personal situation). The thing that determines whether it is a good deal for the club is who we get to bring in as a replacement. For me Simondsen is every bit as good as Paddy. They both have their strengths in different ways but they are at a similar level. So, Simondsen, no complaints. Bunn, grumble, grumble, grumble...

There's no doubt that Simonsen is a top class keeper, so in terms of kenny going there's not too much of a problem as long as SS comes in to replace him.

But if your employer had stood by you when they could have sacked you, would you walk out three months later? I'm not saying there's a right or wrong answer to this, but personally I think I would show some form of remorse. I won't use the word loyalty, the ONLY peope loyal to SUFC are the fans, I don't expect people who aren't Blades fans to show it to the club when £££ are at stake, but I'd be lying if I said I don't hope he get's some sort of injury that keeps him out for a year or 18 months.

Then I would piss myself as much as I did when SWFC were relegated.

Our take on it earlier on in the week was that he wouldn't want to move too far away from his kids...

I'm not too gutted as long as we get Simmo on a permanent. I don't want another set of loan keepers.

Exactly my thoughts Linz.

We could have sacked him & then he would have signed for QPR on a free.

Or maybe he would have come back & not been the keeper he was? So maybe they thought the clause was a get out?

Either way i cannot hide my disapointment. But i think if we get Simonsen then i will have thought we will have come out of this better off.

The clause is 750k, not 1 million. We've payed him wages of somehwere inbetween 235k and 400k*. So basically we are making about 400k out of this deal.

Personally I'm not happy that we are only making 400k out of selling one of the best keepers outside of the Premiership. People can say that we could have let him go for nothing (hence be 400k worse off), that he is not that good (doesn't command his area, distribution is poor etc), Simmonsen is better and la de da, but (for me) this is a royal fuck up by Sheffield United!

* these calcualations are based on him being on a minum contract of 6k a week and a max of 10k a week over the last 9 months.

A really good player, but allegedly far too fond of his ale. He was no great loss the way things turned out.

There was some rot in the beams, certainly in terms of the younger players, at SUFC in the early 90s. An old school mate of mine who was on a YTS at BL told me a few worrying stories back in the day.

He is still thought of as a bit of a legend at Sunderland. More proof that a kid with all the talent in the world will never go anywhere without an attitude to match.

Live fast and your career dies young...

You are not kidding there! There is absolutely no surprise that Wayne Quinn & Curtis Woodhouse had such short careers at a decent level.

Or we could have just offered him a new contract but without the stupid £750K release clause. Why on earth did we need to "soften the blow" of him taking a pay cut? As he has admitted himself, he was lucky that United were offering him anything at all. Were any other club willing to sign him in September 09 and pay him a years wages for doing nothing? Even the "senior sources" at United are saying that the clause was a monumental cock up, so why are people still trying to put a positive spin on it?

The clause itself wasn't a cock up. I think United like to do a lot of business on trust and good faith etc "my word is my bond" type thing, which I like. Can't fault an honest club. I think based on Paddy's comments about his comeback got us all sucked in... we thought he was a genuine loyal bloke, otherwise refered to as "a Blade"...

So the club gave Paddy a nice little softener, but I doubt that they ever expected him to take it... it was perhaps a last resort in case Paddy fell out with the club/ fans/ Manager/ had his eyebrow bitten off in a curry house brawl... he could've used it to get away....

Seems that naivity has been our downfall.

So in future United, trust nobody!

United were seeking legal advice on its validity. It's fair to say they saw it as a cock-up.

The clause was a cock up. No doubt about it. I think there is more than a ring of truth in what Swiss has said about gentlemen's agreements and handshakes behind the scenes, but the reality is that they count for nothing if one party reneges, and all Paddy will have had to do is point at the clause in his contract, in black & white & signed by both parties. It has the hand of Turry all over it I'm afraid.

Don't you think it is funny that you just pulled me up and told me to 'check my facts' when you didn't bother yesterday??? Hypocrite.

He still hasn't gone.

Does seem strange the OS is ignoring this so called move whilst already caalling the Naysmith one

They may be debating internally what to write about the Kenny deal. Naysmith is a free agent - he can do what he likes. The club actually has to explain why we are selling Kenny, especially if we have no replacement lined up.

My guess is the words "pesky" and "agents" will appear in the press release when it comes out.

I'd like to go to a Scarborough Holdings Forum

"Kevin, you said we were going to build a leisure complex and hotel in Windsor Park but we haven't yet, why?"

"Hey! No-one wants to build it more than me, but those pesky planning permission granters..."

Alternatively.... Naysmiths deal has been officially confirmed.

Paddy's deal hasn't officially been confirmed...yet

Why the hell can't we ever sign a replacement BEFORE we sell a player? It's now going to be an anxious wait to see if Simonsen gets a better offer elsewhere.
If he does, we're probably back to the likes of Bunn on loan or spending more than £750K on a keeper worse than Kenny. Not every club is stupid enough to agree release clauses that halve the value of their players.
Stupid, infuriating club!

Well, I hope I'm wrong but it looks to me like Simonsen has now had a better offer and won't be coming. "Free Agent" and perennial Portsmouth reserve Jamie Ashdown is probably on the way instead. Why else would Blackwell go to the trouble of naming his top secret targets on the official site.....?
