I don't keep up to date with much that happens below the first team but on occasions like last night i will go and watch them and cheer them on.

Can anyone who is relatively up to date on the u18s tell me if any of our youngters are highly regarded? By either yourself or people at the club.

My amateur scouting tells me that maybe the number 5 may make it for us in future, Center Back iirc.

I understand that just because they are highly regarded it doesn't mean they'll be any good, George Willis and Diego being two that i can remember being praised highly.

I'm just curious, that's all.

I think its Regan Slater (no 8). Impressed me greatly but......what do I know. He did, however, run himself into the ground, showed a willimgness to do the ugly stuff and has an eye and the capability for an incisive pass. Really enjoyed watching him.

Nosser Davies, keep an eye on him,Jordan Hallam just has the uncanny knack of scoring goals,Regans display last night was akin to Danny Drinkwater

The original question was "who is highly regarded?". The latest batch of new professionals were introduced on the pitch before the Chesterfield game.

Tyler Smith
Stephen Mallon
So, one answer is - the Club highly regard those lads, they've signed them to professional contracts. All except Hirst & Gilmour have routinely featured at U23 this season. So has Regan Slater. So, another answer is - the Club highly regard those lads, they're eligible at U18, but they regularly play U23.

Before his injury, Semple was often Captain of the U23s. Hallam is our top goalscorer at both U18 (19 Goals) & U23 (10 Goals).

Even though I watch a little bit of U18 & U23 football, it doesn't work like that for me. I enjoy it in the moment, and tend not to think of what might happen in a few years time. Sorry.

But, I am on record as saying - of those out there on Wednesday, Jordan Hallam is the most likely lad.

Hope that helps...

I tend to agree with Ball-sup that at the moment there are quite a few players who are highly regarded and it seems that CW will NOT sign any young player on a first or second year pro contract if he does not think they will be part of his first team set up in 1 to 3 years.

If you want the stand out players for me in the U18s it would be ( IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER ) Slater, Semple, Graham, Hallam, Ty Smith.

These 5 are the ones who play in the 23s each week and always play in the bigger matches with the 18s. They have played at a high standard game after game. Slater has made his first team debut and captained the 23s, Semple captained the 23s at 17 years old and had various loan offers from the Conference last season but the club preferred him to stay with the 23s, Graham is a constant in the 23s at 16 years old, Hallam has scored 80 goals in two seasons and Smith has just got better and better this season.
It is worth remembering that we are talking about 17 year old lads. They do have time on their side.

That is not to say that Gilmoor, Parkhouse, Mallon, Cantrill and others are not highly rated it is just their development has been a fraction slower.

With the club becoming a Championship club it means we can give these lads time to develop instead of pushing them too quickly ( Reed )

I think the 5 i have initially mentioned will make a good living out of the game. Will it be with SUFC? I couldn't tell you.

Like a little Stuart Pearce. Young Bomber looked class as well.[/QUOTE

Do you know what the situation with Jake Wright junior is LarkyM?
And where did we sign Norrington Davies from?

I think you know I am a big fan of all these lads. When Semple plays with Graham, who's not in the photo, they are a good combination Graham, right sided, is still a bit raw but Semple, natural left sided, is always available to build out of the defence and they make a good pairing. Slater has had a good year playing in the 23s with Reed but I was impressed with Gilmour on Wednesday. Smith has improved every outing and Hallam, well he is the most natural goal scorer I've seen in a long time. A bit laid back but that seems to help him to relax when he gets sight of goal.
Looking forward to next season to see this group continue to develop under the Development coaches who deserve all the plaudits for encouraging not only skill but also character. The club demands both from the lads.
So I agree with a previous comment that they will all make their way in the game, where is the big question.

The championship may be a better place to be able us to blood a few more younger players throughout the season. The more technical level of the league compared to the "up and at em" you sometimes get in league one may aid their development. Some of the more successful teams this year have managed it like sessegnon at Fulham and Kelly at reading. If they're are good enough I can't see wilder not playing them at some point during the season

Tyler Smith had a good game, especially second half, and up against physically bigger players showed good strength to go with his undoubted talent.

Slater is the only one on that 90 minute showing that will trouble the first team, IMO. Graham & Gilmour could push on. The Coventry CB (5) the pick of the bunch for them.

The Coventry centre back was no better than son of Herol and was a liability when receiving the ball from their keeper.
But hey it's all about opinions

Looked a lot more comfortable to me, especially on the ball, positional and strength wise. Each to his own ✌️

Oli Greaves is a very talented attacking midfielder who I think will start to make the rise into the first team within the next 3 years. And Cammy Hawkes is another. Does the dirty side of the game and does it very well.

I can't see anyone from that squad impacting on the first team with perhaps the exception of Slater and 'bomber' Graham.
They play well as a group, but individually???????

Let's be fair - it's impossible to tell at that age. Players you don't rate can kick on, whilst those who look the best can hit a ceiling.

The one thing I would say it that those who lack athleticism need to be exceptionally skilful to survive in the professional game. I've seen some wonderful technical footballers in the reserves who just don't cut it with the big boys - Graham Anthony and Connor Dimaio spring to mind. Whereas a player like Jagielka (and perhaps Ben Whiteman?), didn't always look the best on the ball but were clearly gifted with a good footballer's physique.

So if they are any good they will all be playing for someone else come 2010?

Ollie Greaves technically is as good as anyone and better than most currently involved in the Youth set up but he needs to settle on a position personally I think he will replace Jordie Hallam in the 10 role next year which will allow him to showcase his ability, he has a great knack of drifting into space and getting in good positions with the quality to do the unexpected...only fault is he maybe drifts in and out of games too much and maybe needs to just up the work rate if he does that then....what a player

Aye pal, I think he's best suited to the 10 role, great vision and technical ability. Hawkes also can play a few roles between midfield and defence, got a very good future also.
