I was just wondering whether any of the young uns are pushing for selection? I keep seeing Hallam and Smith on the scoresheets and Jake Wright is supposed to be a good lad. Could any of our U23 watchers update please?

Was wondering this the other day - as a few of the younger lads got run outs pre season /cups in defence and eastwood for example played in net.

Think at the top end of the pitch we have been fairly top heavy recently with Done / Hanson / Ched / Clarke / Sharp and Lavery. Its not really afforded us the opportunity to see any of these fellas play. So I wonder now with Hanson potentially on his way out, Done gone, Clark suspended any of them getting more of an opportunity to show what they can do...

I'm sure I remember seeing that Wright was scoring at a similar or better rate to Hirst at Wednesday last season so he can't be miles behind.

Billy Sharp was a United youth team forward who has gone on to score 61 goals for the first team, though he did not pass double figures until we had sold him and signed him back twice

Before Sharp, the last striker to graduate from the youth set up and score double figures for us was, I think,Tony Philliskirk, who scored 20 in 5 seasons and left the club in 1988.

That's a very poor record, compared in particular to our excellent record of churning out good right backs.

Even the ones we sold in the interim weren't much good, with the exception of Clive Mendonca and Lee Morris, both of whom succumbed to injury in the end.

Wasn't Philiskirk signed from the Sunderland youth set up and stuck straight into our first team, aged around 17? 83/4 season?

Didn't Alan Woodward come through our academy ? Just thinking

Signed for our youth team in 1962 when he was 15 (despite being a Wendy fan and that Wendy tried to sign him- he preferred Harris because he was more of a "fatherly type" than Vic Buckingham)

Steve Cammack was banging in the goals for our NIL team and scored 9 in our 14-0 win against Scunthorpe, I saw him play for England Youth (he scored) at Bramall Lane so I thought he would be a goalscoring machine in the top division in a few years time. I was wrong!

I think Tyler Smith might be the most likely. How old is he?

The strikers are a distance away from being considered, with the possible exception of Smith. They will probably all go on loan somewhere.I'm optimistic about Slater, Mallon, Gilmour, Semple (pre injury), Graham, Smith, Bennett, Norrington-Davies. It's early days with most of them though.Possibly Slater and Bennett are the closest. U23s are at the Lane on the 4th and 18th of September, 2pm kick off.

I hope the 23s get a decent crowd for the games at the Lane. I agree with your comments but Jordan Hallam still keeps scoring. His contribution to the 3rd goal this week shows he is being pushed to up his work rate. He is not as noticeably on the pitch but when a goal is scored he seems to be in the right place. I think he could be a good tip to break through

Ty Smith for sure I think sending him out on loan would do him the world of good with a view to bringing him back into the fold and doing the same as they did with Brooksey last year and involving him with the first team squad to get a feel for it before introducing him slowly, his pace is electric and he finishes naturally like it just takes no thinking about, but pace is what we are desperate for up top
