Porter deserves his own category: "shit in league one, would be hopeless in the championship and at 28 will never improve."

"Bosmans we cannot afford to re-sign" - whose to say that tho Bergs? i think we all know we can't afford to keep these players beyond this season, on the same wages they are on right now, however i really struggle to see where these players would be able to go (outside the top flight), and acquire a better wage than what we can offer (especially if we do get promoted back to the champ this year). Simmo has been steady this year but i don't think anyone will be willing to offer him 1st team footy on much more than what we can - as i doubt any of the big payers would be interested in him (given he's been nothing but steady). Willo will always struggle to get a better wage elsewhere given his injury history and i cant imagine there's many teams queing up for him at present. Ched is the player at the moment, but only the very highest champ clubs can afford the £15k he's on at present, so he's looking at a drop in wages next season anyhow in all honesty, whether he stays with or without us - and if we go up (touch wood), whose to say that we wouldn't be the best offer on the table to him? BT is different, in his case we cant even look at his contract at anything other than the short-term committment it is at the moment, and in all honesty i don't think his current wage is as big of an outlay as some would expect!

"Wanted by bigger clubs"- again bergs, this is all dependant on whether we get back up or not - bigger at present but promotion could quickly change this - i still instist that none of the below players are ready or of the required standard for Prem footy (i don't see Maguire playing there for a long time as he's still learning hard at this level never mind the champ or even prem!)

In summary, a lot of this is pretty much a pointless exercise at present, a lot of the decisions which will be made by players and the club alike, all depends on the outcome of this season - promotion would mean the strengthening of the current team and an ability to tie down our better players, while missing out will more than likely result in the more damaging weakening of the squad you have aluded to above - the fact that we are up there at the moment buys all of us (players, danny and the club) a bit of time to wait and see what happens - if we go up i imagine us keeping the likes of Ched, Lowton, Maguire and Quinn (if none of these leave in Jan) would be pretty much guaranteed as i struggle to see better options for these players at the moment, given that we still remain a big spender in terms of contracts, and would still be a big draw in the champ should the desire promotion occur!!

In other words...LETS GET PROMOTED THEN WORRY ABOUT THE REST!!!! :-)

Well said

I agree with just about every word.

Clubs are cutting back on their playing staff so a lot of the players whose contract us up at the end of this season will be looking to sign a new one.

Would have to disagree with

Monty
Cresswell
Porter

None of these are good enough for league 1.

If we do get promoted and somehow manage to keep all those players, and without any new players, we will be coming straight back down.

Glad to get Simonsen and Williamson of the books tho

Short of locking up the likes of Lowton and Maguire to longer deals (which I doubt they would sign) there is nothing we could do, or should be doing, about next season at present.

The point is that they've figured pretty consistently in the team this season, swap "good" for "have figured" if you like.

Didn't they both sign new contracts earlier this season?

Yes, which is why they won't sign longer ones.

Bosmans we cannot afford to re-sign:

Simonsen - Let go & replace
Williamson - Let go & replace, offering some of the savings to...
...Evans - who should be re-signed.
(Beattie) - wait and see really. I'd offer him a contract until the end of the season and see how it goes.

Wanted by bigger clubs:

Lowton - Keep hold
Maguire - Keep hold
Quinn - Get as big a fee as possible

Good in League 1, but very average in Championship while unlikely to improve:

Collins - Keep hold. Average he may be, but that's how squad players tend to be.
Ertl - Again, keep hold. He's a decent enough squad player.
Williams - Try to get a fee in the summer.
Monty - Keep hold.
Doyle - Tricky one. Was dreadful last season, but who's to say that wasn't the style of football & general morale?
Cresswell - Please retire. Please. Offer him a coaching role on a much reduced wage.
Porter - Sell. Sell asap.

Young players not proven yet:

Long - A decent member of our squad. Try to loan him out to give him game time. Which of our affiliated clubs do we have left?
Kennedy - Not seen enough to judge.
McAllister - Keep. I think Macca has a bright future with us. I'm starting to sound like an FM Ass Man.
Harriott
Tønne - I'm baffled why he doesn't feature more. Send him out on loan if necessary. Must keep.
Philliskirk - Let go. I don't think he has what it takes. We've barely seen him, but reports are not good from clubs he played on loan with.

* may leave on Bosmans this summer

The rest:

LJF - I've not really been that impressed. As a squad player he's ok but hardly a shining light.
Flynn - Keep.
McDonald - Keep.

If we're going up, we're going to need to replace about half our first-team anyway. Much of what we've got is the basis of an average squad, from which we need to create a much-improved first eleven. For that - especially for the Champ - we need some quality. While we have some potential in our squad, I think it's still going to be too early to be relying on the likes of Lowton, Maguire et al. at a higher level. The one obvious player we need to replace is Morgan. If we can keep the quality in other areas (Evans... well, Evans) and raise some money from sales and most importantly use it wisely we stand a chance.

Two factors we need to consider:

1) Can we trust there will be no "Danny Wilson Second Season Syndrome"?
2) How will the squad look at the end of the JTW?

It will be an interesting summer this coming one. All will depend on which League we're in. I would hazard a guess that it will be a hugely different squad if we don't get promoted, but a not so different one if we do go up. Basically, this season is make or break!!

however i really struggle to see where these players would be able to go (outside the top flight), and acquire a better wage than what we can offer (especially if we do get promoted back to the champ this year).

I like all three players (Simmo, Willo, Ched) to some extent, but looking at their entire spell with us, how they've done individually and how we've done as a club, AND considering the money we've spent on them, they've not met our expectations. I think the club will keep that in mind when they discuss if they're worth pushing the boat out for a second time.

Personally I think we'll look for a new goalkeeper (there have been loads linked, but as Simmo has improved we haven'r rushed into a decision). Williamson is one of my personal favourites, but under four managers he's failed to win a consistent spot in his favourite position. He'll be 30 this year and his injury + suspension record is poor. I can see us offering him a new deal, but I don't think we'll make him a priority, which means he'll probably get better terms from a club that want to make him a key player.

I think we'll stretch ourselves as far as we can when it comes to Ched. But if he keeps up his form I don't think it'll be enough to compete against a club that's better off financially, maybe a club that comes down from the Premiership this season or wins promotion from the Championship.

I also hope they'll stay. They're under contract and it would be up to the club to decide between the fee or keeping them. I don't think Maguire's ready for the Premiership either, but the following make him quite attractive:

- He's young and can improve
- He's had good experience this season, being ever present for us
- His registration won't need to take up a place in Premiership 25 man squads for the next three seasons
- He's big and strong
- He's comfortable on the ball, more than most centre halves

It's his pace that is his limitation, but not many 18 year olds have similar CVs.

In summary, a lot of this is pretty much a pointless exercise at present, a lot of the decisions which will be made by players and the club alike, all depends on the outcome of this season - promotion would mean the strengthening of the current team and an ability to tie down our better players, while missing out will more than likely result in the more damaging weakening of the squad you have aluded to above

I'm generally an optimistic fan and always believe that it's possible to turn things around if the right decisions are made. But if we want long terms success I think we need to make decisions at first team level that also benefits us beyond the current season. We are good at the moment and have a great chance of going up. But it will be of little comfort if we find ourselves with a squad that'll be unable to carry on the momentum next season.

If we do go up most of the problems you mention will resolve themselves.
We will be able to afford to pay our players Championship wages because we'll be in the Championship.
The "bigger" clubs (Ipswich, Blackpool, Burnley) being linked with our players won't be bigger than us.
The best young players can hopefully get six months league experience on loan and come back stronger.

Most of our squad has spent their whole career playing at Championship level or higher.
Many have been regulars in The Premiership within the last five years.
It's unfair to judge their Championship potential based on one disastrous season under four different managers.

What we desperately need is for McCabe to allow Wilson to keep the squad together for just five more months.
If we fail to get promotion then of course the players on "Championship" wages will have to leave.
If we don't there's no reason they shouldn't be kept together as the basis of a successful squad.

I think this is great news:

http://www.sufc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10418~2574425,00.html

Shows the club has some faith in them after all. Hopefully they'll be involved more later in the season. In any case these players can give us continuity if first teamers depart, I certainly hope they'll be given a chance rather than bringing in short term loans. I still think we should be doing more to keep them involved.

Bergen, I think they will get their chance once /if promotion is secure. If we were midtable with no chance off the playoffs or relegation they would be playing. There is just too much at stake at the minute

Actually they're being trained to sing as a Barbershop Quartet to warm up the crowd beforehand.

Some managers like to give youngsters chances, and playing time, even if it at the expense of experienced players. It's not really a criticism, more an observation, that Wilson hasn't been like that here. Playing a full strength side against Salisbury at home, and when 4-0 up against Yeovil at home the sub to come on is Nick Montgomery , that's just some examples.

I don't mean to be harsh on Wilson, it is just that his preference all the time is to play his best, most experienced side. If the younger players aren't given some match action their development will suffer. If Morgan had been fit, Maguire may not have played a minute this season, would he have been the same player that he is now?
