Officially, what is the colour of our socks?
New kit, all-red.
Last season, all-white.
2017/18, mainly black - prefer.

Historically?

Black, then white, then red just behind.

Black for the most part though.

I do like white socks personally, and was worried about the red ones, but they're nice I think, sort of a 1980s vibe.

I assume we don't have a constitution or similar that states this type of thing, or if we did we no longer apply it?

I'd like to see us have some loose rules to our home kit. For me they'd be:

1 Red n white stripes all over kit
2 Black shorts
3 White socks

Please if you disagree refrain from abuse, its only a kit and surely everyone is entitled to their view unless they want blue and white stripes! :D

Is this, in order, the amount of jokes in a 10 minute stand up slot by the following comedians.
1. Bernard Manning
2.Eddie Murphy
3.Ben Elton
4.Chubby Brown

In our history

Black - 29
White - 18
Red - 14
Blue - 4

Can’t be arsed to count the actual years

The years played in each colour sock

Coming in at number one it's black, with 85 years.

A distant second is white socks with 25 years.

Close third is red socks with 21 years.

Finally blue socks with 15 years.

15 years blue?! Wow, didn't know that! I actually thoiugh the retro kit we had a few years ago when we had Connor Sammon (sadly) would have looked better with blue shirts like it had originally.

Just for the maths fans, that doesn't add up to 130 years, it's the overlaps that throw it off. You get the gist though. Black by a long way, then white, then red, then blue.

These figures are worthless. They need breaking down into the years they were officially described as "stockings" and since they turned into "socks".

I also want to know the average width of the stripes on the shirts (red and white) and average shorts length (in inches and metric).

Can you still get sports socks in t’ hole in ‘road, three pairs for a pound?

The original kits that are shown with navy blue shorts and socks is a bit of a misnomer. Things were a bit more laid back then and so we wore "White shirts (later with a red pinstripe), dark shorts and dark socks"

By accounts of the time, it seems the shorts and socks worn could be dark blue, black or even very dark brown. The original kit we had with plain white shirts, was probably majority navy blue shorts because we had a job lot of kit from the Army, who wore white shirts and navy/black shorts.

I like the red socks. First time I started going regularly as a kid was the year we first had the Midas games kit so I’ve always looked forward to us eventually having them again. Feel like red goes better with the new kit than white would have done as well

Depends what era you started watching United. My hero’s always wore white socks

Its always black shorts for me. Prefer black socks but only just over white. Really don't like red socks! Oh and of course the shirt should be discernible red and white stripes, not diamonds, pin stripes, or one stripe. I like a bit of black black trim too!

That’s kits not years : )

Bit of a meaningless stat then !

On a more serious note, in t'early years.... is the navy blue meant to mean navy blue or does it mean not known?

When I first went on that site a few years ago I assumed the former but later thought it meant not known.

Any ideas?

If it was the former, how come a few years ago we didn't play in a 'Bolton type kit'?

In the 1960s, the Man Utd programme not only called the socks “stockings” but the shorts “knickers”: red shirts, white knickers, black stockings.
Going to Old Trafford was like being an extra in a soft porn film.
