Just to clarify , it is obvious the OP is belly pork , but there is a decent point in here about how we can grow the ardent percentage of our support - no sense in pretending we don't have the potential to do it - but the Club needs to tap into the recent upsurge.
What about ST holders going for free last night , if £ is the problem in Sheffield ?
What about doing multi-match deals for the upcoming Liverpool & Man Utd games ?
Let's say it's £40 to get in - make it £60 for Liverpool & Burnley (or even Arsenal since it's Monday night TV).
Make it £60 for Man Utd & Newcastle , since the latter is a Tuesday night in December when families are scrimping for Christmas ?

The gate on Tuesday was similar to other recent early round ties as well, suggesting that there was no upsurge in support from the casual fan.

I don’t agree, it should be enhanced. The opening round should be incorporated into the season ticket as should the FA cup 3rd round. Let’s face it, the competition is realistic a way into Europe for a club like us.

It sounds logical, but it doesn't really work like that. I lived and worked up around that area for a long time and you don't generally get much support from the satellite towns. I'm sure there's some, but like in the towns around Sheffield, there's an automatic distate (resentment?) against the big city neighbour. If kids growing up in these areas don't have their own successful team to support, (and don't want to support their local unsuccessful team) they latch on to a club at the top of the PL.
Of friends I had/have up there, only 1 is Leeds. Others are Forrest, Man Utd, Liverpool, others are RL with a passing interest in football, others are Bradford (but don't go).
Work colleagues (Bradford office) were a mix of Bradford and Leeds, though a lot lived in the Leeds suburbs.
Only personal experience, of course, not a true scientific sample.

I know what you mean with the small town resentment, South Yorkshire is terrible for it towards Sheffield - hence the cock up with the city region.

But, there's more towns and generally larger ones at that. Let's not forget a lot of United fans are from places like Rotherham (myself included). If Leeds has twice as many 'Rotherhams', that's twice as big of a pool of people who are open to supporting their big city club.

Bloody hell I don't know where you were but I've lived in and around Leeds for more than 50yrs and I can assure you that Wakey, Donny, Cas, York, Harrogate, Scarborough, Brid, Aylesbury, Northampton, Halifax, etc etc are all stuffed with Leeds fans.

I currently live in LS27, not far from Elland Road and whilst some locals go there I would say that at least 50% of their home attendance is bused in from all around the country.

Bit of both. Us three are STHs but only have just under 14k points each, so another 150 is useful.
I was asked by people (no points to their name) how they would get to see the "big" home games. I told them to start by building up their points with matches like this, but told them they would still likely miss out this season.

The lack of imagination in selling tickets is baffling. I am a ST holder but when I have used the website to buy tickets I think it's criminal I am able to check out without an offer popping up to buy a ticket for another match at a discount maybe the same seat. Or as you say tie in the big games with massive demand with a lesser game at least on the first stage of sales. For the first time in a long time we have a great 'product' to sell much as I hate the term re football. We need to get of our arses and go out and fill the ground every week to grow the support rather than sit back and think job done let them come to us.

the reason I went was to see our new acquisitions play which is hardly playing reserves
 
I took the chance to watch the game in the South Stand as the Kop wasn't open. Some people around me didn't even stand up when we scored. Pathetic. Please tell me it's not like that for league games?

Lived in Keighley and Halifax, worked in Bradford, worked in a place south of Huddersfield, spent a lot of time in the Aire Valley - Bingley, Shipley, Saltaire. Friends/Colleagues/Girlfriends. Except in the Bradford office I hardly came across Leeds fans. In the office there were quite a few, but I really can't say whether they lived in Leeds anyway. This was in the 80s and 90s.
