Wingers.
I will start by saying how proud I am at last nights performance. In Fletcher, Reach and Bannan they still have some quality players and if the old saying is correct and form does go out of the window in derbies, we couldn't have asked for a more dominant performance. We have had very strong spells against much better sides but I can't think of a relentless, positive onslaught like that for a long time.
We all know where we came up short, we are all aware that not only did we hand them their first clean sheet of the season but for a team that bossed 90% of the game we didn't create any where near as many chances as we should have either.
The problem is, where do we improve?
My mate last night claimed we needed to splash the cash on a striker. Another friend said we still need a creative midfielder.
In our financial position I don't think either is a priority.
Hear me out, I don't think with the money we have to spend (and that isn't a dig at the club) we could possibly improve on Duffy, Norwood, Fleck and Coutts. A player like Mason at Derby might do it but when you consider his parent club regard him as the "next Lampard" the chance of buying a player like that on a permanent is zero.
Those 4 are amongst the most composed and technically brilliant footballers I have ever seen in a Blades shirt.
As for the strikers what better box finisher is there in the league than Billy, who I thought was outstanding last night by the way? His hold up and link up play was brilliant, he run his nads off and showed a desire you'd expect of a fan playing against "the enemy".
I am also a massive McGoldrick fan. He is such a silky footballer with a fantastic work ethic. He glides around the pitch and opposition with a touch like a Championship version of Berbatov.
So to my point. A slow methodical build up is fine but the tempo has to be mixed up. We have to burst into life at times and deliver earlier when the opportunity arises. Listening to Wilders interview last night he is (obviously) aware of this.
The problem is, while it is fantastic to see our center backs overlapping and getting crosses in, having marauding wingbacks getting forward at every opportunity... is it enough and is the quality there?
Like I have previously stated we have the quality to create in the middle of the park but when a team comes to sit back and defend then going through the middle can become very tight and difficult. Spreading the ball wide, overlapping and stretching the opposition's defence is something we do very well but would trained out and out winger be able to do it better?
I am not proposing this as a Plan A, I love our style but in if we had a Paul Devlin or Dane Whitehouse on the wing how much more of a threat would we be? I think in JOC and Egan we have the know how and ability to play a flat back 4 but it would mean losing a man in the centre of the park- but with half an hour left to play when the game is a stalemate then I don't see that as a problem.
Freeman and Enda do a really good job but their goal threat and creativity is obviously a lot lower than that you would expect from an actual winger. Left and right backs can still push forward and we could probably play them both still (although I would be reluctabt to ever drop Bash) I just hope we try for some wingers again.
I thought thay was the plan when we brought in Nathan Thomas, maybe it was and it didn't pay off.
Anyway, I'm a very proud but dissapointed Blade this morning. If last season wasn't a "passing of the torch" then this season certainly is. As always it will be a very interesting January but I still think we are more than capable of staying in tbe top 6 and making the playoffs regardless.
