No real rumor just a thought.

Now Sousa has left Swansea I can't see them looking any further than Gary Speed. I'm not overly bothered but he's a good ambassador for the club and I prefer hime there, plus we always suspect he is the next in line for the top job.

Tend to agree but something has stopped him leaving on a couple of occasions, maybe it's the fine Sheffield air or it could be the promise of the managers post..............

When Our Gaz gets in his car in a morning to got to training does he really, genuinely think about lifting SUFC to glory or is he more concerned with bank interest rates and his next BBC TV or radio appearance? I'm just concerned that it's all a bit too comfortable for him. Obviously loaded, can shy away from alot of the well deserved flak Blackwell gets and all in all life is very good for him irrespective of how SUFC go. This aint a random pop at Speed, he's a decent person to have around I'm sure and no doubt he diligently does his duty at BDTBL but I'm not sure he has the hunger to succeed as a top coach or manager.

Shy away? At the end of last season when there was pressure on Blackie, Speed was the one that was pushing himself forward, barking instructions from the touch line, doing the interviews on the bad results.

I'm thinking that he's genuinely cutting his teeth at United without having to take on the responsibility just yet.

Theres also a thought that he prefers doing the coaching etc and is able to top up his salary with pundit work every now and then

As ignorant posts go Mica you seem to have excelled yourself. You obviously have no knowledge of what Speed does at the club, or what efforts he does or doesn't make.

Speed spends more time with the kids at the academy than any other first team coach. Incidentally this is also in the evening after he's done his day job.
You may think he is just strolling round the training ground in the day with a big fat cigar on, but in the real world Speed works as hard as anyone in the coaching setup and certainly puts in a lot of his own time for the benefit of the club.

Do you mean Sam Ellis and post-match interviews when the flak has been flying? Honestly don't recall Speed giving many but could be wrong.

I don't get this cutting your teeth business and I'm not sure it's relevant in football management. You've either got it or you haven't - take a job and see what happens if you really want it. What on earth could Speed be learning off Blackwell and Ellis - nowt in my opinion but I would say that.

Totally agree - I reckon he enjoys the coaching and as Bob has so politely informed me below he does apparantly put alot into it - which is great and I'm pleased to learn that and I'm pleased to have him about as I said above.

I don't think attacking Speeds professional attitude without substance or any basis in fact deserves a polite response especially when in reality he does more than most.

If Speed leaves to go to Swansea, someone has moved the goalposts.

Correct, I have no idea what Speed does and doesn't do. Cheers for informing me in such a pleasant way. I'm genuinely pleased to hear that he does all that stuff. I do though have an opinion on whether or not someone like Speed, loaded, happy, enjoys coaching the kids, is suited to management. I don't think he is - although I'd welcome him like a hero if he took over at BDTBL tomorrow.

Yep Speed took over a lot of the post match responsibility at the end of the season both when the flak was flying and also after wins...

By cutting his teeth he needs to do a number of things. Firstly he needs experience. Its one thing to be a great player, another is to have the ability to coach. Not as easy as chucking balls down at 8am and telling them to play.

Blackwell, was (and to my knowledge) still is a respected coach. Not sure on Ellis, don't know his background. But then we also had/ have other people like Ron Reid, Pemberton etc.

He also gets chance to learn the business from a different side - contracts, media, tactical, mentoring, board room etc

And don't forget that nowadays if a Manager wants to manage in Europes top divisions and lacks the experience, then he needs Uefa coaching badges... Short lost his job in Fradi for this reason.
