The fact we gave Campbell a new contract, even though he came back from the summer break overweight and unfit and had to be put on a personal fitness plan (which by the looks of it failed). Only Sheffield United would do that. No wonder we are woeful at the minute. What I'd do to have the ruthless Chris Wilder back from 10 years ago. Campbell would have been jettisoned in weeks. Sadly that Chris Wilder is gone forever and the current version isn't fit for purpose (and it pains me to say that).

Difficult to disagree with the above he made one run last night and the camera caught his facial expression which would have been mine had I made that run.
Thing is I'm 70 one heart attack and on the face of it fitter than cambell.

You do see Sunday league players running about more than him.

There has to be something fundamentally wrong with his physical performance.

Maybe he should speak to Lukaku, I’m sure an Italian team found something wrong with his diet. When he changed it his fitness levels went through the roof, but I’m sure this has already all been checked?

You'd like to think so, but probably not!

Cw pretty much admitted it was done so he does t leave for free and we could sell him if he ever got back to form or anyone wants to gamble on him, well words to that effect to me.

According to today's presser, CW seems fairly pleased they only extended him by 1 year rather than 2 or 3. So we're now stuck with him for 2 years.
Sensible decision would have been to give him until January to get his fat arse in gear and then decide.
But we don't do sensible.

Campbell is a disgrace and sums up our current apathy. He has all the talent and is seemingly quite happy to waste it.

Just goes to prove that getting paid thousands of pounds a week is not a motivator.
Campbell or any of the rest of the squad are not a disgrace.

He’s indeed talented but some reason he’s not producing performances like he was previously. He’s so prone to injury but I think he also over trains with weights.

Money is not a motivator above a certain amount, so many other things need to be in place as well

There are no excuses and I’m not looking to justify poor performances, but we are stuck with this squad for a few months. The league cup, whilst a nice distraction and a chance to get more games in for fringe player or young lads, is not a big deal this season. We have a small enough squad in terms of quality.

We will have shit performances and some players will be pushed aside. Peck is taking his chance now and stepping up (carrying the team) that’s what other players need to emulate.

Make a mistake? Head up and correct it. Attitude is so important and not everyone in the squad displays it. That has to change

Anyone with a modicum of physio/osteopathy knowledge will see that he has a problem with his lower back. Not his fault. He's the best finisher we've got but at the moment he can only do short bursts of sprinting before he knackers himself because - and this is for the idiots one here who call him lazy - he can do no more. Even more hopefully, lol, our fitness experts are confident he can overcome his problem to a significant degree, hence the extension.

Exactly. Somethings not right and I’m not about to diagnose, but it’s common with heavier set players that spend so much time on the weights that they’re having the same problems / issues. Campbell fits this bill in my view, but there is still talent in there

Have you seen our chief fitness/medical expert?

Agreed.
The emphasis on upper body strength can adversely affect balance and speed, especially acceleration and general aerobic fitness
I'd look at the entirety of our fitness/conditioning experts. Why do most of our players run out of gas? Whenever I look at the training vids all I see are weights.
e.g. Seriki doesn't need weight training, his greatest assets are his natural speed, balance and acceleration. These should be properly looked after, not harmed by weights piling on upper muscle mass.
Look at Bogle now for example.
Also it will be interesting to see how Hamer progresses at Coventry.

Weights followed by a steak and 2 pints of guinness...1970s pro footballer fitness regime

Fitness experts? At Sheffield United?

Well l spoke to one of the fitness guys just this afternoon as he finished hosing down the fan zone floor and he did confirm that. A Doctor AI or someone had diagnosed it from Sky TV.

Joking aside as someone now suffering from back problems - but as a layman not a forum doctor - l always thought, and have said, it appeared to be a back issue. I just wonder how they can treat it to getting him anywhere near fit?

Rightly or wrongly, do we not think this is purely a financial and board decision to retain the asset, regardless of his current performance, rather than having to go back into the market? We’d potentially be looking at negotiating a contract upwards of 2 years, agent fees, signing-on fees, and the risk of spending considerably more to find a replacement.

You’re probably right. Although agent fees will have been involved in the contract extension. Perhaps we could have cut our losses now, sold him for what we could get (which would have been 100% profit for SCR as he came to us on a free) and signed a replacement who can actually do the job and might appreciate in value. Maybe use some of the money that we spent on Choudhury or Doherty.

I'm not going to single out Campbell because half of this squad are done after 60 mins some quite a bit less, far too many stealing a wage from Sheffield United. Wilder's choice to bring in older unfit players has backfired spectacularly. Let's be right here if a player has not got enough experience by the time he is 24-25 he shouldn't be deemed good enough to pull on the United shirt, simple as that.

Had this debate with El accounto, keeps saying there's a player in there with Camphell coz he was good two years ago. Yet he doesn't rate Cannon at all

Listen to Wilders post match presser, because I felt the same as you.
He says (which outted Campbell really) we tied down an assest, meaning he couldn't just leave for free. Chris even says.. we didn't give him a 3 or 4 year deal and he need to do more.
Basically, we resigned him for financial reasons and not footballing ones. That will still be as depressing to some, but the days of players running down their contracts and leaving for free are done, and to me that part makes sense.

And you'd rely on our fitness experts , based on their record ?

Just got a vision of 78 year old Tyrese Campbell coming on for his 30 second cameo because we couldn't afford to let him go.

Weight training doesn’t necessarily have to make you bulk up.

I’ve been in the gym since December 2024 and gone from 97kg to 81kg.

It’s about your diet as much as exercise and about the calories you burn off.

They probably aren’t chugging down 6,000 calories a day you’d need to look like the Rock!

They’ll do it to maintain muscle mass and keep on top of fat. That being said there is some logic in bulking up the likes of Marsh so they can compete.

His body movement is compensating for something physical -and it’s been like that for a long while he’s not lazy
So, why the uck did we give him a new contract
