Kendall's spending saved us from relegation in 1995-6.

There have also been some law changes relating to transfers during that period - obviously the Bosman ruling in 1995 but also the retain and transfer system ( a restriction that existed until the High Court ruled in 1963 that it was an unjustifiable restraint of trade) on the freedom of players to transfer from one Football League club to another.

clubs of a decent size for the level with a bit of clout will usually go out and buy a couple of players who can make a real difference to their prospects as well as picking up the better freebies and loans at this level.

Meanwhile in December 2022 Sheffield United are deciding whether to sack manager Neil Collins after a poor run of results left a young Utd team midtable in Div 1 after 11 seasons in the same division.

Manager Nigel Adkins is contemplating bolstering his squad in Jan, ahead of the Blades packed fixture list.
The Blades are in the Europa League last 16, League Cup semis, and are currently 7th in the Premiership.

Adkins requires cover for veteran skipper, and Lane Legend Dean Hammond, who is suspended after picking up 20 bookings in 21 league games.

Adkins is also hopeful Fulhams Dan Burn will swap the bright lights of London for South Yorkshire, as the club prepare a 33rd bid for the defender.

It must be a decade or so since we have been safely mid-table, not fighting relegation or involved in a promotion battle.
This certainly helps youngsters who can be given first team opportunities in a less pressurised environment.
The classic time to give a youngster his debut is
(a) End of season with nothing to play for
(b) An away game - no pressure from a home crowd expecting a win
