Come on - you're better than that. It doesn't guarantee it, no, but it makes it more likely.
Maybe but in the past (especially the recent seasons), more often than not, the new signings were a waste of money!Come on - you're better than that. It doesn't guarantee it, no, but it makes it more likely.
Beattie 4m fee, 40k per week. Speed 25k p.w. Naysmith. 17k p.w.? Hendrie ? Per week. Robson 1m per annum? Kidd 0.5 m?
Spending that guaranteed failure!!

Claude Davies 3m plus wages. Kazim-Richards, Nade, Fathy, Shelton, can't even remember the rest, embarrassing.
Yes we do need one or two players who can make the difference like Allchurch in 1961, Hope and Hockey in 1971, Cockerill in 1984, Hodges in 1991 etc etcDo you genuinely believe that we can't improve this team with one or two modest purchases?
Plus the Kendall era - real money at the time on Hutchinson, Ebrell, and others I can't even remember. At least that wasn't KM' s lash up and money.
Well, if you don't buy players to improve the first team, that's wasting money. But that's not what I'm advocating.
It does not guarantee success, that's the point, or in our case three points in three different eras, three different boards and three different managers.
Clubs want higher fee? Agents being greedy? There were probably no agents when we got Allchuch, Hope, Hockey, Cockerill and not sure about HodgesI never said it did.
I said it made it more likely. It does.
Teams who buy good players often get promoted. Have you not noticed this?
I've read some bollocks on here in my time but people arguing we shouldn't spend money cos cunts like Robson did and it didn't work defies belief.

No you didn't, it was Silent I see; apologies offered. However, few L1 clubs actually 'buy' players and its certainly not a recipe for success.
The recipe for success is, as always, choosing a better manager than the other clubs. Signing good players helps no end as my signature below has said for months.
Anyway, personally I prefer incremental building over 'revolution' any day.
Meanwhile in December 2022 Sheffield United are deciding whether to sack manager Neil Collins after a poor run of results left a young Utd team midtable in Div 1 after 11 seasons in the same division. No you didn't, it was Silent I see; apologies offered. Some ridiculous comments on here about chucking the towel in or realising the season is over and so on........
Absolute bollocks!........
Every one of those players at the lane wants promotion, the manager wants promotion and yes even Mcabe.
Your'e in some truly fucked up place if you think otherwise.
5 point gap too big? ......fuck off!
Article? More like an undergraduate dissertation. It was too badly written to read in full.Article on the development of agents in football (they have been with us since the game went professional - they started as almost an adjunct of a clubs scouting system and worked for clubs not players - changes in the transfer regulations brought about their changing role.

Bristol bought Agard.
Preston bought Johnson
Pigs bought COG and Madine
Wigan bought Wilschut and Morsy
HI
clubs of a decent size for the level with a bit of clout will usually go out and buy a couple of players who can make a real difference to their prospects as well as picking up the better freebies and loans at this level.
Since summer 2012 We paid fees for:
Brayford 1.7m, Done 700k, Baxter, McNulty, Scougall, Westlake, Murphy, Taylor, Higdon, J.Wallace, Adams, Cuvelier, Sharp 500k, Coutts,
All in League 1 with no success. Biggest spenders in the division surely.
A baffling thread.
