Get ready for the Wilder to Southampton rumours
There’s only 3 clubs I fear would fancy taking Wilder at this moment. Everton, Newcastle and if we beat these muppets today Wet Spam. The top six wouldn’t give him a second glance and I sure he wouldn’t give the rest a second glance himself.

Dec 1892 Burslem Port Vale 0 SUFC 10 is still the record for an away win in the League.

Leicester winning 7-0 at Southampton with 20 mins left to play.

Not rigorously fact checked this as it's the Post Truth Era - and I've lost track of who's in the League - but I once saw this Quiz Question

Q: Which is the only League team which is not named after a place?
A: Port Vale

(Since they dropped the Burslem.)

I might be wrong but to my knowledge there is no area called 'Arsenal' in London, especially in Islington which is the area they've always been based. Obviously their name comes from military cannons anyway as per their club crest.

They used to be based in Woolwich, didn't they? There was an arsenal there, but I'm not sure if it counts as an area.

Yes there is a rail station named Woolwich Arsenal a few stops from Charlton

If I had to defend this position in court I'd say The Arsenal was a place in Woolwich, so technically they are still named after a place. I don't know where the Port Vale comes from but Burslem was the place name. But just a moment...

...Wikipediaing only deepens the mystery:

Port Vale is one of the few English league clubs not to be named after a geographical location, their name being a reference to the valley of ports on the Trent and Mersey Canal. They have never played top-flight football

It doesn't refer to a geographical location, but it does refer to a valley 🤔 - and it states, by implication, that there are others.

I'm lost. I wonder if there's any football on.

They spent 13 non-consecutive seasons in the 2nd division, punctuated by two seasons in the Midland League before they resigned due to financial difficulties and entered liquidation in 1907. The name of Port Vale continued in the North Staffordshire Federation League, and this new club were successful enough to be reinstated into the Football League in October 1919.

They got in because Leeds City were expelled after 8 games. They took Leeds’ record and points and finished the season.

It’s funny: all this ink and publicity about Leeds’ centenary and nary a mention of why they were formed - the FA disbanded their predecessors due to massive rule breaches.
