Osborn and Fleck Signs

For me for what its worth, good squad fillers and we will need it. Also guaranteed early cup round starters, we are guaranteed at least 2 games where potentially these 2 could come in handy.

Disappointing but expected outcome due to our financial position.

John Fleck is a legend at this club but sadly his legs went Jan 2020 at Arsenal away.
Ben Osborn, for all his efforts, he is simply not good enough & never has been which is why he’s never had a nailed on position for us and Forest in his career.

No one is wanting to have a negative outlook on this season. It’s about being realistic. And everything is pointing towards a season spent in the bottom 3 spots for the vast majority.

I’m just glad we got promoted because we may of not even had a club to support.

Hi Stegosaurus here

Osborne is OK as squad backup. Fleck though, a waste of space at this level. Giving him a contract is pissing good money away. Should have put his wages towards snagging someone decent
Fuck me I'm actually agreeing with Stegosaurus here...

I think I'm OK with Osborne, I think he gets unfairly critisised and is no where near as bad a s people make out.

Fleck has been finished for the best part of 3 years now, I really hope I have to eat a dose of humble pie but can't for the life of me see why we've given him another contract, reduced terms or not. Performance levels haven't been anywhere near what he's shown in the past and now injures have started cropping up. I can't believe he's only 31!

There were some comments about retiring this song but it will probably be our anthem this coming season.

"We ain’t got a barrel of money, we ain’t got Woodward or Currie, But with Ozzy and Fleck..........."

Hi Stegosaurus,

Actually, no Osborne isn't OK as a backup. What am I talking about. He's lower championship level. Even Wednesday would turn up their nose at him.
Both Fleck and Osborn would improve Wednesday’s squad as it stands.

"And by signing Ozzy and Fleck,we're risking our neck,
United!"

Not really happy about both these two signing new deals, but trying to play devil's advocate and look on the positive side.

We have a matchday squad of 18, which means 7 of our 25 man squad won't even make the bench. We need these 7 players to basically be youngsters / backups in case anyone gets injured and then they will come into the matchday squad as bench fillers. These players will be unlikely to play much all season but are needed "just in case".

Maybe it makes more sense for these to be covered by players already here. Ones we know fit in with the squad, have good attitudes and in case of an emergency can at least do a job.

There's no point in us signing players this window who aren't going to make the matchday squad as that would be a waste of our limited resources. Perhaps signing these two on reduced terms was the best all round decision.

Are you suggesting either of these players should be anywhere near the matchday squad?

lot of arguing on this thread but its all about opinions what it tells me is that the 7/8 new players i was hoping for isnt going to happen probably only 5 new additions coming in both these lads have been great servants for the club but for me neither are good enough to get anywhere near our first 11 in the premier league i would sooner have seen their combined salary used on 1 player who would be challenging for a first team starting role actually we might as well have given billy another contract

Surely for the money (albeit reduced from what they were on) we've offered these two there are one or two young, unproven, fit, physical players that it would have been better trying to sign, as squad fillers? If they turn out not to offer very much, then that's essentially what you're going to get with Fleck and Osborn at this stage, but potential upside being they could actually be good and this was the chance they needed etc.

Appreciate it would take some work/effort to do this, but someone is currently paid to do it...

We can’t be just keeping players because they’ve done well in the past or because they’re good in the dressing room.
Bottom line is neither are good enough for premier league football.

No, I'm saying they should be part of the 5 players (someone corrected me that we get a 20 man match day squad in the prem) who by default are not in the matchday squad.

I'm saying their role should be backup in case someone gets injured. In that case one of em comes on to the bench.

All perfectly reasonable and a view I agree with. Some just don't see it though pal and like to stick with the tried, tested, and tired. Not really too fussed either way as not my money being wasted, but from United's perspective it seems a bit of a waste of an opportunity. Anyway, most on here have had their say now. It is what it is and I'll back anyone in a United shirt next season.

Can't we just get behind them all when the season starts ( I know that the majority of fans will), We know we haven't a pot to piss in. Everyone in that squad will have to play at some point due to injuries and suspensions.
We need to stay up in the PL, it's ok being a yo yo club, one season up then down then back up, but it's not the ideal situation.
PH has to work with what we have, I wish him and every squad player all the best for next season, we know they will all give 100% and more to try and keep us in the PL.

We currently have 17 (obviously not including youngsters and Robinson) so we'd need 7/8 new signings for the 25 man squad.

Am I the only person on this thread who would NOT be surprised if Fleck put in a great season next year? Lest we forget how great he was in 19/20. Fleck is clearly capable of rising to the challenge, and I for one back him to do it.
Watch the videos of then and last season. Fleck's bodyshape has changed massively. He is very barrel chested now compared to then. I reckon he will have put on at least a stone. It might be all muscle but he has definitley slowed down plenty. I don't think technical skills makes up for that.

Every training vid they are all doing weights in the gym 💪💪

They must both think it's Christmas. Neither of these two would get into a Champ side. I reckon it's Halloween

Ok, I was just trying to reconcile your comment of "There's no point in us signing players this window who aren't going to make the matchday squad as that would be a waste of our limited resources" when we have just spent probably closer to £2m than £1m in wages making for all intents and purposes new signings who will not be making the matchday squad. If we have an injury crisis, we have an injury crisis, throw one of the kids in if it happens, there's a decent probability that they're no worse and we are not wasting money and a squad spot by doing that. Heck, we could probably pick up a free agent off the street mid season if needs be who would be as good as Fleck is

So it seems we've got the 2 who can't get a decent contract anywhere else ...
Just shows you what the football world thinks of these 2.
Just think of the PL athletes these 2 would be up against - never mind skill - they won't even get near their opponents , let alone the ball.

And we've not yet got Robbo , who was almost ever-present last season and who would be decent cover at LWB.

Talk about uninspiring news - I'd rather get one young player in from a lower league who is an athlete with potential and put him on a 3 or 4 year deal.

We've just used money to create even more gaps in the squad next summer , for players who can't contribute to us staying up - they will rank between 21 & 25 in the squad.

This makes no sense.

I'm all for loans + short-term deals for players who will go straight into the first 11 or even the matchday 20.
But these 2 signings do nothing to build a squad for 24/25.

We are gonna be in such a pickle next summer with hardly anyone under contract and no money for transfers.
