To create a better atmosphere wouldn't it be much easier to open the whole of the blocks nearest the away end. It would really help boost the atmosphere overall in the ground as the back of the kop is very loud at vtimes bu the rest of BDTBL lacks atmosphere. This needs to be done tbh.

Agree. The atmosphere was excellent a few seasons ago when H Block in the South Stand was quite full on a regular basis. We need the Lane to be the intimidating ground for away teams that it used to be.

Think we need to fill the lane a bit more before we start opening up other blocks...

It puzzles me that whilst the rest of the ground isn't full, we insist on opening the Bramall lane upper tier corner. Surely we'd be better reallocating these tickets to other parts of the ground and filling those stands

The Manchester derby had Fergie's bunch surrounded by city fans with a double row of police keeping them apart them surely this same tactic could be used at the Lane to create the desired atmosphere.

And make those areas all-standing while you're at it.

A recipe for disaster. It will be a bad day in English football if standing is allowed to happen again (in PL and Champs), unless football fans are willing to give up drinking alcohol before going to a match. I very much doubt it.

Bollocks.

If recent developments have taught us one thing it's that the fans were not to blame for Hillsborough.

Poor infrastructure
No safety certificates
Shoddy policing
Fences

They were the reason for Hillsborough. Time to stop punishing the fans for something that wasn't their fault...

Look at what is installed in grounds with 'safe standing' (just do a google search for pictures). I can't see how standing can possibly be unsafe with this sort of equipment in place - however drunk you are.

Personally, I've never believed standing is unsafe even on a traditional terrace, but the 'safe standing' railings make it a real struggle to conceive of how anybody could possibly get hurt.

I still fail to see how they can have had all blame removed from them. We've probably all seen the videos of them climbing over the turnstiles to get in to the already overcrowded stadium, which now seem to have gone missing from thenews archives since it's all been the Police's fault.

The timeline on this site http://www.lfchistory.net/Articles/Article/2757 even says that fans pushed their way in when an exit gate was opened to eject a ticketless fan. Who knows how many others will have got in?

No, not all the Liverpool fans were to blame, but to say the fans were 100% blameless just because an inquest over 20 years after the event said so seems naive to me.

Yep, those poor hard done to Scousers stitched up by South Yorkshires finest, meakes my heart bleed for the poor little urchins. There were hundreds of the ticketless tossers who did the usual steaming the turnstiles to create a panic and get in on a freebie like they'd done so many times before. That end of the ground was a shambles, the bottle neck design was an accident waiting to happen and if the cops hadn't opened the gates there'd have been deaths outside. There were mistakes made after that but for me, the root cause were the fans who arrived late and were unruly to such a degree that the coppers had no choice but to open the gates.

Sad thing was that the innocent ticket holders who'd taken up their spot at a reasonable time ended up being the majority of fans who died, that was tragic.

As to standing well times have changed, grounds are invariably better and fans are way softer so personally I can't see why it would be an issue.

I despair...here we go again despite the findings of the independent report (and Lord Justice Taylor's) and the now ongoing investigation into SYP we still get people who were not there denying all the evidence and blaming the the fans.

Nobody is innocent in an awful event like this, blame can be apportioned on all sides, the police, the scousers, and that hole of a club over there, but the most important fact is 90+ people never made it home after that game and what came after cover up's, false story's about what people were supposed to have done, being reported slavishley in the scum paper, etc etc,no one was inoccent, and no 1 party was to blame, all it was,and is was blaming the usual suspects young working class people happened for decades and it'll never change. In my life time, its been the irish & the enemey within {thats the miners by the way} good enough to fight in wars but not good enough to have jobs or freedom, rant over, power to the people and all that.

It is good for atmosphere, but working on that seg line like I was on Sunday is an absolute pain in the arse!

Let's bring back the BBC and other hooligan elements while we are at it all in the name of adding some noise and atmosphere. Not too bothered over the limited standing idea but to deliberately put opposing fans side by side in a half empty stadium well that thought beggars belief.
And references to the Hillsbrough disaster are not helpful and not needed that has been done over and over the fact that less than 1% of scousers may have not had tickets will not change a thing or support the argument for a return to standing, that day is in the past and should remain there.

On and off the pitch United seem to have done everything possible to rid the club of the passion it was once renowned for.

The days when clubs feared a trip to BL (hooliganism aside) are long gone and I'm not sure will ever return in the same way.

Atmosphere is pathetic at the Lane compared to years gone by. I don't blame the fans and I realise it is has happened at other clubs. I don't blame lower league football. We had some of our best atmospheres in the old 4th and 3rd divisions.

Guess for some, the controlled, new-style library experience will be a good thing. I'm glad I was around to witness the passionate decades though.

The thing I struggle with is why are League 1 and 2 clubs allowed normal terracing if it is oh so dangerous, as people are suggesting?

You might say that this is ok as the crowds are lower. But let's take Rotherham as an example - they had to convert their Tivoli end into seating after a few years of second tier football. Why was it that upon them being in the Championship, the standing suddenly (well after two years of it) became more dangerous? Their crowds on that end of the ground didn't go up by a lot, as it was full most weeks beforehand.

Having small sections of safe standing in grounds would prove very popular and the barrier system, would ensure that it's a lot safer than the current terracing at lower league grounds.

Don't think you have to worry about the return to the old days when groups of away fans walk around the ground as if it's a day out at the coast football violence is virtually dead and buried in this country.

All you you get when you put two sets of opposing fans at the side of one another is drunken cunts gobbling off so to put a standing area in that position is a joke.

So if we mus

So if we must have a standing area let's have on the Kop

Wonder if it would be cheaper haha

(just finishing off above)

One question, what are you talking about? Who's blaming the fans? The fans were the ones who died, the scally bastards who tried to get in for nowt were to blame in my eyes and they always will be. And tell me Sherlock, what evidence is there that proves that it was all the fault of OB? Was it because Lord Justice "I know fuck all about football" Taylor said so? Or an independent panel who odds on knew fuck all about football also, or at least the behaviour of the robbing scouse bastards who had quite a reputation at the time for this kind of behaviour?

Sorry but you despair too easily and if you want to believe all the bollocks spouted about this tragedy then feel free. Next you'll be telling me that there was no pit closure programme because Mrs T said there wasn't

Can't disagree more.

In in the 80's when we were averaging under 10000 in the old 2nd division the atmosphere was dead most games.I remember a game at home to Birmingham on a Tuesday night where you could have heard a pin drop for most of the game(Peter Withe was on loan to them at the time and scored both goals)Many games under under Bassett and Warnock were 'dead atmospheres' at home.Does any club really fear an away trip ? The 4th division was different as we were on a 'victory tour' but the season before the atmosphere was dead except for the last few games when we we fighting to stay up.

Whether you stand or sit is irrelavant to the atmosphere to atmosphere....in the premier league,Everton,Newcastle and Charlton were superb for atmosheres as were many of the home goals. Many away games last year were excellant and we were in the seats.

There is a myth that standing will improve atmosphere's at matches when in reality it will make no difference. It wasn't better 'in the good old days'...with hindsight it was a disgrace the conditions we fans had to watch the game in and the way we were treated by the police.(however, our so called 'hard men' didn't held with thisReverting back to terracing will be a sep backwards, imo. Pressure needs to be kept being put on clubs to improve facilities. The next campaign will be to bring back the football specials :-)

BDTBL can be intimidating for away fans (just ask the Pigs) but I am struggling to see how you come to the conclusion that the club 'have done everything possible to rid the club of the passion it was once renowned for.'If anything .they have done everything possible to get more fans in,especially the kids.

Compared to the early part of the 80's we have nearly doubled the attendances yet we are in a division lower. How is the club to blame ?

Totally agree the atmosphere from going down in 76 till 88 could sometimes be dire.

As for bringing back standing areas what a joke the games moved on theres more women and kids go to games now and isnt it better watching it in comfort come on!

When you watch some of the Scotish and Irish leagues on Sky it brings home how much we have progressed.

Aggro at matches is virtually none existent I still have banter about the old days with lads but lets leave it in the archives.

I wouldn't want to stand at football, but can't really see an issue with them introducing the cellular standing sections like they have on the continent. Given we have all-ticket matches and generally good facilities (food, toilets etc) in most grounds, I can't see why 10% of ground's capacity couldn't be a safe standing section for people who choose to stand there. Clearly there's fans standing in big numbers at loads of grounds in the Prem - Liverpool, Stretford End at Old Trafford, Holte End Villa, Chicken Run at Upton Park.

I don't buy these arguments saying its a retrograde step (it's not, it's a wholly different infrastructure working within a much more controlled environment than the 70s and 80s), or wheeling out the Hillsborough argument (see the recent inquiry). I also don't really understand why some people are adverse to it - they don't seem to be advocating whole grounds being converted to standing; so if others want to stand whilst I sit, I don't give a toss frankly they can exercise their choice. I even bet women and childen might want to stand (ooh err). And if the atmosphere is better, then its better all around.

Maybe if people turned up before 3pm. That would have helped

Unsure. South stand is full of silent Blades and they look askance at anybody even cheering in there. For them, a game is a time for silent reflection.
