You're far more likely to be murdered by someone you know than a stranger.

Even had a woman pick me up along the Finstown Road late one night, she survived. And you can't get much more rural and risky than that.
I was had a French woman pick up me and a mate and drive us half way across France. We both thought she was crackers, but she was still alive when she dropped us in Lyon to be fair

Question Greenwich Blade -

Have you ever caught a lift with someone who had you fearing for your life instead of them?
The guy who asked me to get my dick out had me a little worried, and the minibus full of students who were all popping pills, including the driver who was driving like a maniac, that was very unnerving. There was a drunk driver who took me one junction around the Peterborough ring road - that was a relief to get out, and the traveller family with no seat belts in the car who I egged on to beat the fastest lift I'd ever travelled in at 121mph on the M40 - that was my own daft fault.

As for genuinely creepy characters, not really. One bloke told me he'd murdered someone once but I decided he was just trying to scare me into not trying anything similar myself, and the guy who said he was an armed robber by trade, I believed him, but the chap who showed me his ankle tag I really found intriguing, the first question I asked being, "What did you do?" (for the record, he drove the get-away car).

warming to this theme I once hitch hiked from Brisbane to Sydney and I got caught in as rain storm. I was sheltering in a toilet block when this bloke came in and offered me a lift.

He seemed like a normal quiet guy and then after a few hundred miles said he was going to see his mum for the night and he'd drop me at a campsite nearby and then pick me up the next day and take me another 500 miles or so. I agreed and so he turns off the highway on this track through the woods.

For about 30 minutes, I was shitting myself (there was a mass murderer on the loose in Oz at the time). However, he drops me at a campsite, comes back in the morning, takes me to his mums house for breakfast (she had insisted apparently) and then dropped me hundreds of miles south.

It turned out he was just a really nice bloke and not a mystery serial killer, feasting on naive young men after all. 🤷‍♂️

Not exactly a hitchhiker. Sure it was the Northampton game 81/2 division 4 season, we were coming back up the M1 and spotted this 'erbert on a motorbike in front.
More like a rodeo rider and indeed the bike threw him. We stopped, had a look and I calmly declared him dead.
"I'm not" he said.
"Good". sez me.
Anyways, here was a ne'er do well if ever I'd seen one, with his two shiners. Wanted to chuck this motorcycle (obviously nicked) in my car.
Seeing as Blades won 1 - 2, we did the humane thing and put him in the car and set off. Wanting a rest stop* we pulled in at next services, where we unanimously decided
to abandon whoever he was.

*I was driving, other Blades required rest stop.

When I was about 17 I was heading from London back up north. I don’t think there were night busses because I was somewhere round Marble Arch waiting for the busses to start running so I could catch one to Staples Corner. A cabbie spotted me waiting and asked me what I was up to. I explained and he offered to give me a lift, no charge, as he wasn’t busy etc. Being a bit naive, I just accepted. About half way to the M1 junction he offered me £5 to have a wank in front of him. I declined and spent the rest of the journey shitting myself as he was quite a big bloke and I’d have struggled to fight him off if it had got nasty. I wasn’t too keen on jumping out of the cab either as I had no idea where I was. To be fair, he dropped me off at the bottom of the M1 but I’ve never been so relieved when I got a lift. I was convinced he was going to come back.

Further up the M1, a truck driver stopped. Glaswegian. “Where are you going?” I asked. “Amsacks”.
“Ey?”
“Amsacks”

This continued until I thought ‘fuck it, just get in, he’s going in the right direction’

So, once I’m in and settled I ask him “Where’s Amsacks?”
He looked at me like I was a moron and said “Fucking Amsacks, ye drive up the Amwun and then turn onto the Amsacks”.

Ahh, M6.

Would have been a nice end to the story if you offered the jock a crumpled up fiver for the lift....

It's only happened once in 37 years of hitchhiking, but as Beavis & Butt-Head would say, "Wow, it really does happen."

Hitchhiking in the direction of Stonehenge from Sheffield in 1986, a car pulled up. Before I jumped in I thought it best to ask where he was heading .

"Hitchin," replied the driver.

"Erm, yes I am, but where are you going?"

"Hitchin."

Fucking hell, can he only say one word? "Yes, I am! Now, where are you going to?"

"Hitchin. In Herts."

Oh, he's really fucking gone now. I'm in South Yorkshire but he's telling me that I'm hitchhiking in... Ah bollocks, I get it now. "Erm, ahem, yes, Hitchin in Hertfordshire. Very good." I felt like a right twat

He dropped me off at the Luton turn-off of the M1.

14yo, stranded in Stocksbridge had to walk back to Chapeltown. Thought i was going to die of exposure so i tried my hand at hitchhiking. After an hour of cars whizzing past me a brand new porch 911 pulled up! Engine roaring! i thought to myself, yes! cant wait for me mates to see me climb out of this badboy. Bloke got out. Oh thanks mate i said, could you drop me off down Chap please? He looked at me disgusted and said FUCK OFF. Had a piss and drove off.

Turns out it only took a couple of hours walking, not the 3 weeks id initially thought AND i found a dead badger!
Made my night that one. Did you kill the badger ?
