Actually I'm feeling quite smug today. Not only can we dance on the grave of the once-mighty Owls, my 'second team,' (Boston United) gained promotion from the Unibond league on Saturday and will be in (I think) the Blue Square North next season. Three years ago they were within a whisker of going under after flirting with the Football league for a couple of seasons and getting heavily into debt. They managed to restructure, but continued to struggle and were banished to the 7th tier last year.
A new management team last summer (including former Blade, Rob Scott) sacked almost the entire squad and rebuilt with part timers and a few loanees. They did so well that I was tempted back to watch them for the last three games of the season and thoroughly enjoyed seeing an attacking team, full of confidence, and scoring goals. The banter from the terraces is just as good as in the higher leagues and it doesn't cost a fortune to get in.
If Boston continue to progress and the Owls go into freefall, in a few years' time we might see them in he same league, by which time the Owls would be known as 'Brightside and Carbrook', having handed over Hillsborough to the Co-op bank, and moved to a smaller ground, as befits their new status.
We can all dream...
