Just been playing Football Manager 2017 and I've got a player who's beaten the record oldest player to score a goal for me at 40 years 127 days. The previous record was 39 years 172 days.

Can anyone name the record holder for us?

bill punton was 63 when he scored winner v owls

John Burridge?

I stopped reading at "Just been playing Football Manager 2017"

Got any tactical nuances that Tufty should be aware of? Any players that you signed from Canvey Island who scored 50 goals last season?

Gary speed must be close? ???
Billy Gillespie was 39 when he scored his last competitive goal for the Blades and Jack Pickering was 38 when he scored the winning goal to deny Stoke the league title. Speed's last goal for us was in the 5-2 win at Charlton in November 2008. He was 39 then and I think he was the third oldest behind McCall and Gillespie

FM is very advanced scout tool and the club could do a lot worse than using it to scout far off lands (actually being serious) we clearly can no longer afford a vast scouting network so why not

Beware of the bump....

Billy scoring yesterday got me wondering where he is on the list of Oldest Player to score for us.
He was 36 years and 308 days yesterday.

According to Silent Blade
1. McCall
2. Gillespie
3. Speed
4. Pickering

I think Jimmy Hagan was 39 years, 92 days when he scored his last goal for United in a 3-0 win against Liverpool on the 13th April 1957. I've just worked out that Speed was 39 years, 75 days when he scored at Charlton so Hagan would be above him.

I think Gillespie was 39 years, 122 days
I think McCall was 39 years, 172 days

Maybe if Billy signs a new 3 year contract, he might beat the record!

The only one I could think of who might be ahead of Billy was Nudger Needham. He scored his last goal on 9 Oct 1909 when he was 36 years 262 days old , so Billy beats him!

Joe Shaw got his last on 28 March 1964 aged 35 years and 277 days, so he's behind too. Thinking of more...

Ronnie Pickering played for United?

In 1909, life expectancy for a bloke was 55 years. That would make Needham's goal equivalent to a 54 year old today. Fair play to him!

It’s not. Life expectancy has little bearing on ageing, it’s just a statistical calculation, skewed at that time by a high number of childhood deaths and industrial accidents.

(I’m guessing you know this and you were just joking).

That's the kind of thinking we need more of when talking about these kinds of things.

Needham holds the record, then.

I thought it would be Alan Cork seeing as he looked 75 when he played for us!
