Should we offload Coutts to Donny

I'm digging the current trend of revitalising this threads so people can show off.

However, it'd have a lot more validity if these same people could unearth the ones where they themselves were arguing that Coutts is the second coming of Xavi, Leon is Harry Kane's long lost brother and Basham is a poor mans Jamie Carragher...
OK.

Leon Clarke

;)

He frustrates me when he doesn't go flying into challenges but Montgomery did when he couldn't make a 10 yard pass and Sharp when he doesn't beat 6'6 centre halves in the air
Anyway its better to concentrate on what a player can do and feed their strengths ,its up to the manager to assemble these parts and form a working unit with all the right cogs in the right place. I don't want to get into another Adkins rant so I will leave that. Coutts is good at getting the ball down ,getting his head up ,driving with the ball ,keeping possession and giving good quick balls in tight situations ,he is also a very good dead ball player ,but for some reason doesn't get a look in except for corners. If we get the right balance he could be a massive asset especially linking with Brayford and Sharp which has shown great promise until some genius decided to change the tactics and team around.

Ah, someone who knows what they are talking about!

Barneys been a very decent contributor for a while now. Had a bad spell under Adkins and lots of people thought he was shit and wanted him out, but he's done very well since. Very much the Paul Coutts of the forum I'd say.

Loses points for giving wilder the team against QPR

I don't see anything wrong with criticising players for poor performances at any particular time.

But, I wonder if those in the thread who wrote off Coutts... will do so for other players in the future?

Players can be poisoned by a manager, the players he performs alongside and indeed by an entire club if it's toxic at a particular time. They can also take time to find their feet and adapt to playing style and teammates.

We KNEW we were toxic for seasons and seasons, yet we continued to write off players. I did the same with Freeman. I was an idiot.

Although it seems funny reading back through this thread there is some real insight there. Everybody recognised that Couttsy had strengths, but quite a few people pointed out that his weaknesses were not balanced by those around him. He needs time on the ball and he is slow tracking back.

With Fleck beside him he is transformed. If he is pressed quickly Fleck is always there to pass to. At QPR without Fleck he was pressed quickly and had his worst game that I can remember in 2 seasons, regularly rushed into passing the ball to nobody.

If you read Moneyball, it is all about assembling a team with an overall capability to win, and not rejecting people who have weaknesses that can be got around. Tufty is proving to be a Grand Master at this. He may be a good coach, but his over-riding strength is using people to do what they’re good at.

I may keep saying it’s Magic, but it’s actually brilliant analytical ability.

It’s still Magic for me though!!

Anyone could see that Coutts wasn't playing well at all, hence why Wilder had him on the transfer list. He is now playing very well, which is equally as obvious. That's why Wilder plays him every week. If anyone is somehow smartarsedly claiming he was playing well back then, with a view in to the future, then I'm afraid you're hugely mistaken and any upturn in form shows nothing but your prior inability to recognise bad form.

I try not to be overly critical of players for that reason but sometimes you just get sick to death of sub-standard performances. The problem with bad management is that it can often cause the players to look like they're not trying when quite often it's because they're not entirely sure what they should be doing and when. They become a little insular, they won't run to cover another player because they're not sure someone will cover for them and don't want to get caught out of position and blamed for it, strikers stop making runs because they never get the ball at the right time, defenders get nervous and make daft decisions.

All of that can be the result of poor team selections, poor coaching and poor tactics but for us watching it often seems like the players don't care. Often they do but need proper leadership and direction.

Bassett was doing 'moneyball' thirty years ago.

I've lost count of the amount of times I've been told in the last 18 months " always knew he was a good player, said it at the time, there's a good player in there"

The revolution in though on Paul Coutts was his interview in the Walsall home league program last season. He justified very well his reasons for under par performance pre Wilder.Should be read by all Blades.I might make a thread about it.

I'm massively wrong about stuff all the time. I was sure Patrick Suffo was going to be a global super star and that Stuart McCall was going to be a terrible signing. We are all stupid, thats why we have to keep going back to watch :):)

Yep.

"Sadly, Morgs will have a terrible time in the PL"
