We know goals make prizes, but the stats suggest we should've hammered them

12 shots but only two on target is the frustrating one for me

I thought that for the amount of possession we had we didn’t create enough proper chances and generally our final ball was the cause of this. Too often we didnt cross the ball early enough when we had the chance, giving their defenders time to get organised.

Or enough shots in or around the box.

I think we also need to credit the Birmingham defence. They kept their shape most of the time and put their bodies in to block stuff. It’s not always just down to us.
I think it’s interesting that we are now having to adapt to facing packed defences much like we did last year only against much better defenders. Our conversion rate for chances has to be spot on because we will inevitably get less of them than we did last season.

At half time Sky had stats that included "Touches in the opposition box" which was the most meaningless statistic ever as Brum scored from outside the box, and most of our touches in it were Duffy dribbling rather than anything meaningful.

This isn't having a dig. But we seem to fanny about out on the left wing, Mainly Stevens, gets in a crossing position and pulls it back to either Duffy or O'Connell. when to do a first time cross. not only does it not give time for the defense to organise allowing the forwards to get in front of the defenders. I sit in the Westfield and the first half was infuriating. Not a doubter as i know we can and do play better, As somebody stated shooting practice required before Millwall. UTB

Exactly. Division higher, better defenders. Who'd have thought it.

I’ve just watched most of the game back on the box, I think we played a lot better than some are giving us credit far, it was basically attack verses defence most of the time and Birmingham’s three CB’s and CM defended really well. A stat showed that they only got into our box 10 times in the whole game which is jess than in any game this season. I know somebody has questioned this stat but it does give an idea how much we pushed them back.

Lundstram played well as did O’Connell, Clarke and Fleck. There’s wasn’t as much slick short passing in the centre as we’ve been used to, but the whole team seemed to under instructions to get it forward quicker from the off including the keeper who threw it out less than normal.

For me our biggest need now is to get Baldock back and give us some balance. We simply don’t have the same threat down the right hand side without him. Much as I love Bash’s 100% spirit, we need somebody who can pass a ball and pick out a good cross. I’d move Bash to RCB and CCV to CB and then we’d have the threat of Bash storming forward to back up Baldock like O’Connell does with Stevens and we’d get more fluidly in the middle third because of Baldock’s passing ability.

My biggest concern is that not enough goals are coming from the rest of the team right now. We could do with few more players getting onto the scoresheets apart from Clarke and Sharp, but then I thought that last season and up stepped Freeman.

Dominated possession and deserved to win but we weren't positive enough and created few real chances. We do over pass it at times and take too many touches which allows defenders time to get set. Need to get the cross in earlier and get more shots in.

Exactly

Very much like a few games last season for me.

Attack against defence, constantly going sideways to find an opening down the flank and then a poor cross or final ball when we did.

I'll take that though because it shows we're capable of doing the same at this level and as we know it's not a regular weakness.

Frustrating last couple of games but our consistency of play still outstrips most in this league, and we still look in real good shape with a chance to strengthen coming up.

The only reason we did not win is because I backed us in an acca.

in which case sean apologies to you. Ive spent last 8 hours trying to defend the poor lad. Guess i am a bit touchy

He misshit two obvious passes in the first half that had the moaners jeering and booing. Other than that, l thought he played well, tackled strongly and got around the pitch. He's also got better with each game.

Of course he isn't as effective as Coutts but then no one else at the club is, and the transfer window is closed. Not really sure what the moaners expect. It's the usual S2 need for a boo boy.

Agree with all that. Hes not played at this level before. Need to build around him next few years although he will probably dip in and out of side for his and the teams benefit

I think Lafferty has a much better cross on him than Stevens. I guess neither him or Stevens can play right wing back?

Lafferty is more defensive in that position though and I can see why Wilder prefers Stevens instead.

I found these quite interesting - they are the average positions over 90 minutes

What app is that on?

Not surprised that O'Connell's average position wasn't in his own half
