Gil Reece's two brilliant goals in the 3-0 home win on 17th April 1971. The first goal was a solo goal, the second was a flying header

Ah , Gilbert Reece , the Flying Welsh International.
Hard as a coffin nail , fast & skilful.
A quiet man , not celebrated in the media , but a hero at the Lane.
I can't remember seeing those 2 goals on TV , so I have only my mind's eye , 47 years almost to the day.
I'd be an enthralled 12 yr old , up in the BLUT with my Dad.
I well recall the first goal , he went on a mazy run before shooting home.
Then his second was a perfectly textbook execution of a flying header.
Something you don't see much of these days.
He died young , I think , such a shame.

That first goal by Gil is one of my favourite Blades goals...I was right behind the goal on the Kop,so had a great view...AHes i remember it..he got the ball just over the halfway line, inside left channel...went passed a couple of Brum players before bending his run inside past another Brum player...he then turned 90° between 2 central defenders..straight through the middle of them like slicing a cake to get through on goal and buried it past the keeper...I can still picture the roars of antcipation in the crowd as he went past players, and a sort of lull in rhe noise just before he buried it...I'm sure I heard the thud of the ball when he hit it...and then everyone going mental celebrating....Pity there is no footage of both his goals that day.

My outstanding memry is the 4-4 draw at BDTBL in September 1996. What a fucking bizarre match that was!

That was an eventful day. After the game the police waded into the fans outside the ground for no reason. Saw a rank of coppers approaching and didn't think much of it, next thing the expendable batons were out. Saw a couple of coppers beating a guy on the floor but didn't have much time to dwell on that as a lovely WPC on horsback requested that I 'Run you fucker, or I'll fucking trample you', and I duly obliged - all the way up to London Road with her baton swishing past the back of my head. Good job I could shift then, would have no chance now. Can't believe it was over twenty years ago.

1963 I was 6 year's old we went with my uncle Ike to st Andrews (he was a big blues fan ) and my dad covering my ears when a police horse stood on my uncles foot so I dint hear the language :D:D:p

A brief, insignificant spell of eight games saw Olivier Tébily in a Blades shirt. He would later play 83 games for Birmingham where his zero goals kept up his average of six goals in 247 appearances for various clubs.
Always thought he looked decent from those 8 games...Blues fans still sing a song about him to yellow submarine..."we all dream of a team of Tebily's",so must have had a decent spell there.

My first ever Blades game 47 years ago almost to the day and who's up next?....hope it's the same scoreline..3-0!

While I was looking at the fixtures from 1971 I noticed that we played 4 games in 8 days. Imagine that now? No, I can't either and only had 1 sub back then.

I knew I’d been to Birmingham but couldn’t remember anything about it or when.

I now think that I remember that I went when at University in Leicester to a night game and looking at Soccerbase it’s confusing as they have 2 matches on the same day - Monday 30 Jan 1984 with a 2-0 away defeat and a 1-1 home draw, both in the cup.

That timeframe is right and I do remember feeling “home” at seeing Blades and hearing Sheffield accents but I don’t remember anything about the match!

Anyone remember playing them in a friendly at Bramall Lane way back in the day? I'm sure it was a mid-season friendly for some reason. I might be wrong going on memory but we lost 1-0. There was trouble on the Kop even though there was only about 6000 at the game. Also remember playing them at the Lane in the mid 80"s FA Cup tie which finished 4.4. First time I saw flares fired at a football game.
