Various memories...
  • A period between 1995 and 2000 when seemed to be major trouble between respective fans every time we met.
  • Circa 1997, Bluenoses singing “Oooh Oooh Adebola” through the entire half time at BDTBL.
  • Tricky Trev Francis copping for some serious abuse when he brought them to the Lane first time around.

Beating the scruffy bastards 4-0 in November 2001.

Montgomery, Brown, and a Peschisolido brace saw them off in front of a whopping 15,600 crowd at the Lane.

Fuck all else happened that season, apart from Warnock making us a national embarrassment in the WBA game a few months later.

Was it not about this point in the season when a Keith Eddy led team went to Birmingham hoping for a win to secure a place in Europe, iirc Brum won 1-0 and killed the euro dream.?
0-0 , bit of a bloodbath at New Street by all accounts.

I seem to remember that we wouldn't have qualified for Europe anyway on a technicality , quelle surprise .....

Gil Reece's two brilliant goals in the 3-0 home win on 17th April 1971. The first goal was a solo goal, the second was a flying header

My outstanding memry is the 4-4 draw at BDTBL in September 1996. What a fucking bizarre match that was!

I think it was this game when we'd got the lumo green as an away kit and I was quite impressed by the Brummies wit in singing "you've got more stewards than fans".

It was a great game.

Brum away as a 15 year old was my first away game on my own with mates and I remember the bus window being bricked and making a few quid in sharpened coins throughout the game as well as losing 1 nil.

Trevor Hockey taunts the Blues fans in August 1972.

Bob Latchford scored the opener early in the game. Blues fans booed Hockey every time he touched the ball but he shut them up by hitting the equaliser. Woody scored the winner in the 2nd half

Putting six past the at The Lane in about 1971.
First visit to St Andrews in 1974. I went on the football special train but didn’t know how to get to the ground. I asked a bloke and his wife which way to go and he gave me a lift in his car right to the ground.
Wondering when my head was going to get kicked in in that 0 - 0 draw on the night European football was lost. The atmosphere was evil that night.

December 13th 1969.

I was at a children's Xmas party organised by my dad's works. When he picked me up after the party, he told me that we had won 6-0. I was mightily impressed and it was in the next month when I became a committed Blade

We drew at home to Birmingham on Saturday November 25th, 2017 in the last meeting between the clubs. 0-1 down at half time when United allowed Birmingham’s Boga plenty of time to control the ball on the edge of the area and drill it in from 20 yards (who’da thunk it?). Leon Clarke got the equaliser with his ninth goal in four games and United’s first draw in 26 games.

Our previous meeting with The Blues was a 0-4 home defeat in the fourth round of the FA Cup. Danny Wilson was our manager and we would finish the league season in third place in the third tier. Ched-gate, ‘pipped by Wednesday’ etc.

Recent-ish meetings:

To date, our League results against Birmingham read:

Home: P: 50 W: 30 D: 9 L: 11 F: 110 A: 65

Away: P: 49 W: 12 D: 9 L: 28 F: 47 A: 86

The team we now know as Birmingham City were formed in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance, they became Small Heath in 1888, then Birmingham in 1905, finally becoming Birmingham City in 1943. So, strictly speaking, our very first meeting with Birmingham City was a game played on 27th November, 1948 where we won 2-1 at St. Andrews.*

(*The ‘Full Blades v Birmingham history’ includes all games from 17th September, 1892 when they were known as Small Heath.)

9th August, 2008 and the first game of the 2008-09 season saw Kevin Blackwell’s Blades lose to a solitary Kevin Phillips goal in this First Division encounter at St. Andrews. United would finish this season in third place but miss out in the play-off final against Burnley. We had a very decent line-up that day:

Sorry about the ‘music’ on the clip.

On February 10th, 2001 we beat Birmingham 3-1 at Bramall Lane in a Division One (second tier) match under Neil Warnock. Our scorers that day were Shaun Murphy, Paul Devlin (who had previously played for The Blues) and Paul Peschisolido:

One of our more memorable meetings came on 24th August, 1996 with a 4-4 home draw in the second game of the 1996-97 season. Trevor Francis had just left Wednesday in his role as manager and was in charge for this game. Look out for Paul Devlin, Steve Bruce, Gary Ablett, Mike Newell, Paul Furlong and Barry Horne in Blues colours (and no stand on John Street! Our goals came from Gareth Taylor (2) and Andy Walker (2) Howard Kendall’s Blades would finish the season in fifth place in Division One before losing the play-off final to Crystal Palace :

Just as with our recent opponents Cardiff City, perhaps the biggest meeting between The Blades and Birmingham City came in the ‘70s. On Tuesday night, April 29, 1975 approximately 8,000 Blades fans travelled to Birmingham for the final game of the 1974-75 season which, if other results went our way could have earned United a place in Europe. As ever, The Blades let their fans down, only securing a 0-0 draw. On the way back to New Street Station, we got absolutely battered by the ‘Zulu Warriors’.

Here’s a brief clip of our 1-0 win at St. Andrews on 10th October 1970. John Tudor was the scorer:

Men to watch:

Che Adams

upload_2018-4-16_5-17-29.png

Signed from Ilkeston in 2013 for a ‘six-figure sum’ and would score 11 goals in 47 appearances for The Blades – including both goals in a memorable 2-2 draw at Bramall Lane on 28th January 2015. Che only came on as sub. (for Campbell-Ryce) in the 74th minute of this League Cup, Semi-Final, Second-Leg tie.

Adams was sold to Birmingham on 8th August 2016 for a reported fee of £2m.

Significant others:

A brief, insignificant spell of eight games saw Olivier Tébily in a Blades shirt. He would later play 83 games for Birmingham where his zero goals kept up his average of six goals in 247 appearances for various clubs.

Trevor Francis

Started his playing career with Birmingham in 1971, Francis would become the first £1m transfer in English football when he signed for Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in 1979. Francis would later manage both Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City.

Paul Peschisolido

upload_2018-4-16_5-21-37.png

Had two stints with Birmingham (1992-94 and 1996) and joined The Blades permanently in 2001 – 2004 where he scored 17 goals in 79 appearances.

We haven't played them much recently, so it turns out that I have been to the last 2 games at Brum:

2001-2: last game of the season. They needed to win to get in the playoffs. They did, 2-0. We did not play very well. They went on to win the playoffs.

2008-9: first game of the season. I think it was also on telly, and was an early start, though I'm not 100% sure. Kevin Phillips scored the winner in the last minute of injury time (though there was still time for Jon Stead to hit the outside of the post after the re-start). With Beattie injured, Blackwell started Henderson up front and packed the midfield. We were deeply unambitious - it took United about an hour to realise that Brum weren't very good - and there was the feeling that had we actually tried to win the game, we could have done so. Had Phillips not scored, United would have finished second and not third. Just goes to show they are all important games.

The area around St Andrews is a bit grim. The only food option is Asda, and I still haven't found a decent pub near any of the Birmingham grounds.

Saturday has got a 1-0 defeat written all over it.

Wondering when my head was going to get kicked in in that 0 - 0 draw on the night European football was lost. The atmosphere was evil that night.

Some of the worst violence I've ever seen. Brum didn't have a defined 'kop', West Midlands Police were - and still are - fucking useless and just let Blades fans stand everywhere. I was on the large terrace down the side of the pitch and we got seriously 'infiltrated'. About four of them attacked me from behind and I felt an almighty blow in my back. It fucking hurt. The red mist descended, the adrenaline kicked in and I turned round and charged them - four big fuckers, two white two black. Like all so-called 'hooligans', they shit it and backed off. Of coppers there were none. I reached behind and the back of my shirt was in tatters and my hand was covered in blood. They'd obviously 'stuck' me. Couldn't have been a knife or I'd have been dead, probably a bunch of keys.
Back at New Street, the highly-polished floor was covered in pools of blood everywhere. We took a battering that night.

That 4-4 was my dad's first game. We were late and Furlong scored just as we sat down right behind the goal. I've never seen the highlights until now but in my head our first goal was a world class chip from a narrow angle.

Anyway his second game was the playoffs Vs Ipswich, his third was the final Vs Palace and somehow all that convinced him to buy us season tickets the following season, which we still have today. So an important game for me!

Went back in 1973 our first away game. We were in the paddock behind the goal and got pasted by Brum fans. way outnumbered - as for the result we won 2-1

memries is Grafix's thing btw .. behave yourssen' :D

Dane Whitehouse rejected a £1 million move to B'ham in 1997. In fact he didn't just reject it, he allegedly stormed into the office and asked what the fuck they were doing trying to sell him when he had no intention of leaving United.

Another reason why he's my number 1 all time hero.

Every time I see Ainsworth's fucking gurning fizzog on the TV I want to throw something at it.

I went to the away game on 9th Sep 2000. I got into the ground about 10 minutes late and was sat with the home fans. I didn't realise that Brum had already scored and I thought it was still 0-0 until the home fans started to cheer at full-time.o_O

I have it on good authority that Che Adams actually did the exact same thing but McCabe overruled him.
