Odds Slashed on Speed for next Wales Manager

I honestly don't think he'd want it yet. He seems like a sensible bloke and knows he isn't ready for it.

I certainly don't want him to leave anyway, but could probably respect his decision if he did go as it's not often you turn down your country's call. Needs to be sorted ASAP

If the Welsh FA offer a considerable compensation package, you can guarantee McCabe will take it. He'll then appoint Morgan as manager on his same wage!

It's all speculation, but Speed must be wondering what he's let himself in for at Bramall Lane. Is he having sleepless nights worrying about it? Will there be light at the end of the tunnel? Of course, he'd like to see the job through, build a team and get the Blades promoted, but the Wales job could be a handy way our for him - if he wants it.

That's it in a nutshell. Let's hope he wants to stick around cos I don't know who else we could afford at the mo. Maybe Pardew will decide having 2% of the Geordie fanbase behind him is a bit too easy and he fancies more of a challenge :(

I think a few should remind themselves of the list of associated managers managers before Speed was appointed. If we lose him I guarantee a huge wave of complaint about his successor.

I've no knowledge about how Speed will play out, but a manager can't be judged with zero resource and a total of 20 games under their managerial belt.

We're skint and stability is the way forward.

Compare and contrast...;)

Would the friendly be at the Millenium or the Lane?

Point missed - edit.

You could be right Raul, but where's the Warnock in the wings?

Funnily (stupidly?) enough, I backed Heath too. The only manager I've ever wanted out after a short while is the man jointly responsible for our current mess, Bryan Robson.

Peters, Thomson, Heath, Speed. New young managers don't have a good record at BDTBL. A return for Nigel Spackman? About only rookie who had done quite well until forced to sell two players on the same day Deane and Fjortoft was it?

Walter Smith is available.

It depends what he was told at the outset. if Speed has been short changed by the Board, then I wouldn't blame him for doing a Brucie. Having said that I would prefer him to battle it out.

My prediction for new manager if Speed goes would be the tea-lady or ticket office staff. All you need is to know the team well and bingo.
Speed being ligned up by Wales has been mentioned on the main BBC news/sport report this morning.

However teams that keep chopping and changing managers through a season invariably struggle. Look at Newcastle 2 years ago, they had something like 3/4 managers in a season for one reasons or another through Keegan, Hughton, Kinnear and Shearer. Stability is the key. It needs to be kept.

Speed's comment on all this, per the BBC:

I haven't heard anything," said Speed when asked about the Wales vacancy on Thursday. "It's nothing, just speculation, so I have nothing to say on that.

"I haven't got time to be flattered about the link because I have just found out about it. I don't know anything about it."

Speed also insisted he was "happy" at Bramall Lane despite the club's precarious position just two points above the Championship relegation zone.

"I am just looking forward to Saturday and trying to prepare the team," he said ahead of the weekend trip to Barnsley. "I have got enough on my plate."

I hope he hasn't got an agent. We are powerless in the face of those pesky agents.

I would not be overly upset by his departure in isolation - but as ever it's all about who does it next, and McCabe has form for dumb managerial appointments.

BBC Radio 5 Live confirm Wales have asked the Blades if they can talk to Gary !

Me niether, but having slept on it the only conclusion I can come up with knowning our modus operadni at the moment is Sam Ellis.

Kinda changes the backdrop a bit.

I also had that thought and it scared the bejesus out of me.

I can't see him going to be honest but if he did I wouldn't be that bothered.

Replacements, there's Houghton, Coleman, Brown to name a few. We would also get compo from the Welsh FA which would either, (read probably!) dissapear into the financial black hole or be used to pay compo to another club for nicking their boss.

Compo for Speed......use it to pay off Blackwell.....appoint from within.....see where this could be going??

This rumour is hot. How hot? Imagine Debbie Harry in cammy knickers spoon feeding a beef vindaloo to Pan's People in a sauna in Bangkok. Thats half as hot as this rumour.

For those who question "what has Speed done for us in the past 20 games?" it seems the Welsh FA have seen enough in Speed to make him their no.1 choice. Is it simply a case of (Welsh) blood being thicker than water or is Speed really a world-class manager?

Or maybe he's just the cheapest option.

Or maybe he's just the cheapest option.

The Welsh FA doesn't strike me as an organisation that has a lot of money to use on compensation, so either we're paying Speed peanuts or there's a lowish level of compensation written into his contract in the event another team wants him. I'd be interested to know if Speed specifically asked for a release clause in the event Wales came knocking on the door. We'll know the answer to that soon enough I imagine.

I imagine Speed isn't short of a bob or two after a long and lucrative playing career.

The Welsh job would provide a nice steady income for a relatively untaxing job. Plenty of perks, too, I would imagine.

You couldn't blame Speed if he wants to take it.

I hope you're right.

I hate it when managers leave before I've decided that, having initially welcomed their appointment, I don't like them after all and go and stand in the car park at bramall lane waving my shoes in the air and shouting up at the directors' lounge telling them to fire him.
