Odds Slashed on Speed for next Wales Manager

Speed won't be going anywhere, there is no way the club will allow him to go. The future has already been planned out and he is firmly in the centre of it.

This was the moment I knew he'd be going....;)

When GS was appointed I thought the club has simply taken the line of least resistance - coupled with KMcC's liking for "trophy managers".

Personally I'd like to see GS take the Wales job and for us (for once) to do a thorough job in deciding who should replace him.

Given that KMcC has shed his overseas football empire, I'd like to think he no longer needs a high profile name at the Lane, and that we can get in a manager who has considerable experience of working with limited resources.

GS may well become a decent manager in the future - but the conditions (financial, squad, lack of experienced and effective support etc) at BDTBL are too difficult for him to manage at this time in his career.

The guardian are reporting that Speed has agreed to take a pay cut in order to join Wales, so either the Welsh job is poorly paid, or he was on top whack and far from the cheap option that some have suggested.

Isnt Wales just south of Sheffield, not that far really? Is he going to be managing a Crystal Peaks division one side then?

your taking the absolute piss, what is speed ment to do with one of the worst squads in the league which is all down to Blackwell and Birch.
Even Mourinho couldnt sort this squad.
Barnsley must be laughing at us got rid of two shite players in Boggy and Kozzy and replaced them with much better. Were ment to be the bigger club.
Going on McCabes statement the other week though I would say were officially Bolloxed.
Only Pig Fans would want Speed to leave now.

I repeat, what has Speed done to inspire such loyalty? Is it the 15 goals we’ve scored in 17 matches? Or the 21 points in 17 matches? Or 20th place in the league? Or limited funds being wasted on bringing in Calve, Wright, Parrino and Batth to warm the bench? Or the failure to generate his own funds by moving a single player out on loan? Or saying his top priority is a pacy attacker and then failing to sign one? Or the dreadful disciplinary record and his support for referees who’ve made terrible decisions against us? Or the Brazilian-style attacking football we’ve been playing?

If Wales take Speed off us, they will have to pay us compensation. This would allow us to bring in an experienced, proven manager who we know (rather than just hope against hope) has the credentials to keep us in this division. If we force Speed to stay with us and it turns out he's not actually a great manager after all, we would have to pay him hefty compensation to leave. This could be our very last chance to part company on amicable terms and make a profit into the bargain. Why specifically, do you think Speed is the best possible manager for us at this time?

£1M compensation would be an amazing result for a manager who should really be considering his position based on his performance to date. If United make the right managerial appointment this time, it could be the best thing to happen to United since the "promising young rookie manager" Heath was sacked and replaced by "experienced and proven manager" Warnock.

However much people try to put our prospects down we can still offer one of the 30 best (and best-paid) managerial jobs in the country. Most out of work managers and many lower-league managers would jump at the chance of managing Sheffield United. I'd like to think United will take 2 or 3 weeks to tout the position and make an informed, reasoned decision but names I personally would like to see on a realistic shortlist are:-

Phil Brown
Chris Hughton
John Hughes (ex-Falkirk and Hibs)
Eddie Howe
Micky Adams
Keith Hill
