O'Connell's next

Well spotted Ricky, with the recent signings of Brooks, Fleck, Coutts, etc, it would make for a (relatively) secure future moving forward.

JOC has been one of our most consistent performers, and he's shown his dedication to the cause time and again. Finger's crossed this happens soon.

With Fleck, Brooks and hopefully O'Connell on long term deals, it would take an absolutely crazy offer for me to consider selling any of them. I wouldn't have took £5m for either of them at the start of the season, I doubt Wilder would have either. So good luck to any clubs who try to sign them in the future.

Duffy will be next. He's different to the others as he's older but he deserves an improved deal and extension, and he'll get one.

I'm loving the way we are getting players to sign for 4+ years. It seemed to go under the radar but Wilder did say United had another year option on Brooks 4 year deal, effectively making it 5 years.

Just so positive at the moment, I'm just wondering when, where and how it's all going to go tits up:confused:

Excellent news about magic hat signing for another 4 years. He's been really solid and dependable. Wilder is certainly building for the future and knows the type of players he wants to keep. Utb

Why the hell did Brentford sell him to us?

He looked like a good player straightaway. He obviously had great potential and all the key attributes for a centre half.

If they thought he was too chunky and lacked agility that's nothing that can't be improved, as we've seen. Since he's been here he's improved physically. He's leaner and more agile, and it's took him to another level. But it wasn't hard to predict that happening so to sell him for about 300k is a huge fuck up from them.

If they loaned him to us for the season we would've had to be offering £3m+ last summer to get him permanently.

..and yet their fans called him something like 'a donkey who won everything' when they played us :D

But the problem was that he wasn't fulfilling that potential for them, perhaps in their system. Don't underestimate the work that he's put in and the work that the club have put into him.

Last season was phase 1 - get him fitter, work on his defending, concentration and the like
This season, phase 2 - turn him into a fucking lean machine

Yet another player that the Wilder revolution has turned into a success.

  • sufc_official Jack O’Connell’s magic, he wears a magic hat and if you put a contract in front of him he’ll sign it and send it back! #forgedinsteel

Hard to fulfil your potential when you're not playing regularly. He made 18 scattered appearances for them, at a higher level and as one of 2 centre halves. Unless he was terrible, it's hardly basis on which to write him off as they seemed to. Especially when you consider that centre halves often develop a bit later.

Magnificent news. All our big financial assets on long contracts, and our top academy prospects too. Now we just need the big price tags, and realistically we can't ask for any more.
