It was obvious we would lose today, there was no doubt in my mind we would lose due to the following reasons:

  • return of Danny Wilson.
  • our crap record against Barnsley.
  • We've won 3 on the bounce, very rarely do we win 4 on the bounce in the league.
  • Big home attendance - the amount of times over the years we have a big home attendance and we lose, leaving the floating fans wondering why they had bothered.
  • The hype around the so called "derby"...it isn't a derby!!
  • Decision not to start a striker. I love Clough and think he could be the best manager we'll ever have in the modern era - but I think he was being a little stubborn today in not starting McNulty, almost as if to say "i'm the boss and I'll do what I want".
So lets not get too carried away with the defeat. Its a loss, a predictable one as it ticks all the boxes for predictable defeats as a Blade. The key is how we bounce back...if we can keep playing well, and put another 3 , or by some miracle 4 or more, wins in a row and get to averaging 2 points a win then all will be forgotten.

No matter what type of blade you are - glass half full, glass half empty, we had a glorious opportunity to make statement to the division and we failed it.

why? - because it is what we ALWAYS do, even though we played half decent - loads of possession, no end product - what a shame.

Ruined my weekend, but will be at Crewe next Saturday.

It is who we are and what we are - we're all Blades aren't we............and as usual we move on to next week.

We're pure and simply a mediocre team with a mediocre budget, and while ever this is the case we will finish in a mediocre position.Unbelievably baffled at Cloughy sometimes.

Not entirely convinced we are mediocre - we played some good stuff, but as for the past 3 years, we are EXTREMELY weak at balls into the box. Does anyone know who lost Winnall for the goal?

I would prefer 2 strong, hard, uncompromising, none ball playing centre halves to have one job only - just to get rid. Let the others in front of them play all the football.

I'd say at this precise moment we're definately mediocre, but i totally agree regards the centre halves,we haven't got the CB's to play football, like you say just get rid of the fucking thing if you're not good enough.

OP you forgot the clincher... attacking the Kop in the first half! I'll add my own as well, second time I've been on the Kop this season, the other was opening day defeat against Bristol.

Agree with all the posts about centre defence not being good enough.

To be honest I thought there was a bit of an over-reaction from some Blades today. Overall I thought we played well today, especially first half and certainly deserved something from the game. As usual my heart sank when I saw the starting formation and was served up what I expected. We have two decent wingers who were attempting to put balls into the box to who exactly ?. If we are serious about bringing another striker in, (which I don't think we are), perhaps its time for our scouts to get out their passports and try venturing south of the Trent, like the Dingles have just done.
Anyway back to the game, only Baxter was shite for me today, with standout performances from McEveley & Doyle. With Bristol City sailing off into the sunset(Championship) playing with their strange system of using strikers, shame we didn't take advantage of some unexpected slip ups by the chasing pack, (should that be chasing or limping ?).

Perfect summary of yesterday. I agree with every bit of this. I don't expect more than 6 points all season from Chesterfield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Scunthorpe.

For the Winnall goal, Wallace was in front of him, with his feet planted to the floor. Two players behind him who also didn't attempt to get the ball, not sure who though

It's because of who we are and what we are, that we seem to be taken for granted.

could be some truth in that - what I do see is our LOYALTY is taken for granted.

Many clubs must look at Sheffield with great envy, and the "Sheffielder" in me also allocates that loyalty to our S6 neighbours - as much as I think they are piggies, we both have great affection for our team and ours will be showed again next week at Crewe and the week after against Donny.

I knew damn well that it wouldn't have mattered how well we played we wouldn't win against them. They have every bit of luck going when they play us.

We may have a number of individual mediocre players giving mediocre performances but collectively we have a good interchangeable squad. Mr Clough has to sort out the CH and CF situation and we will be back on track. Ok we lost yesterday , but overall we are a lot healthier than we have been in years . Mr Clough knows his reputation and aim is to get us out of league 1. I do question what Andy Garner and Chris Morgan are doing . You are only as good as your own staff . Sort it Mr Clough.

All the possession in the world means nothing unless you work the keeper. We create a lot but the chances do not end up in a strike on goal that troubles the keeper. When we do (like Alcock's header yesterday) and it is saved it's as though we feel that's the one chance that got away and we seem to get goal shy all over again.

The difference when you have a quality striker is that you convert a chance early doors and get into the driving seat. We don't concert and the we are susceptible to the sucker punch - as evidenced yesterday. We can't always pull two rabits out of the hat in he last minute and the last 4 of added time.
