Apart from Wigan I cant see another side being anywhere near us in terms of the total amount paid to our match day 18.

Just working my way through Soccernomics. I disagree with much of it but they do make a good evidence-based case that it's wages that matter, not transfers.
If you think that this sounds a bit self-contradictory - ie higher transfer fee means better wages I agree.
They did try to explain this but I wasn't paying attention; maybe Hammond is a good example no fee, high wages, important player. Another one might be Roy Keane at Man Utd: bumped his wages to £100 000 per week but no fee (beyond the initial fee years before).
