Fiery, be honest, any bloke who could get that set of players passing the ball the way they did on occasion deserves at least a smidgeon of respect doesn't he? I was very sceptical about getting Wilson in as manager but in a lot of ways he was a breath of fresh air. He dispensed with the Montgomery/Doyle midfield pairing for the most part, and he did try to get us passing from the back, didn't always succeed but in all honesty we didn't have enough ball players to do it to perfection. Let's hope he makes some astute signings who aren't afraid to play football and maybe then we'll get a better view of how good his footballing skills are.

Losing Ched was the biggest disaster of the season, completely out of Wilsons hands and it's easy saying we should have replaced him, the fact is that there simply aren't that many 30 plus goal a season strikers out there, and certainly not many who'd come to the 3rd division to help us out just because we're in the shit. By all means look for a replacement but again, there really weren't all that many options out there.

The bottler thing I do tend to agree with. His demeanour in the big games is Robsonesque as he stands like a statue without a flicker of emotion when it's all going sadly awry. Losing at the Sty being the ultimate example, OK we don't need the madness of Neil Warnock but come on, there were 7000 Blades there that day and you stood rooted to the spot, hands in pockets looking around as though you were home at last. Show some passion man, it's what Blades do!

Anyhow, rant all we like we're stuck with him, and I'd rather be stuck with him than Blackwell, Speed or Adams in charge so no matter how we pontificate, we'll have to wait and see.

Keep the posts coming, they stimulate debate and that's what message boards are all about.

Nail. On. Head. Especially the bit in bold...

I'm sure he's read this and will heed your words. He'll think about it and it will make him perform better based on your assessments.
Or perhaps Boo, he will read your response, think about it and perform exactly the same based on your acceptance of wallowing in the third tier of football along with Bury, Crawley, Stevenage, Yeovil, et al

I sincerely hope we DO perform the same. That would mean 90 points, which will probably mean promotion next season.

It's not the goals we missed per se. The biggest hit was the effect on squad morale and team spirit once the guilty verdict had been made. They never really saw it happening, never believed it would become a reality and it hit them all for six. That's where our season went pear shaped - had a verdict of not guilty been arrived at I am convinced we would have gone up automatically with a retuen far greater than 2 points from the last 9.

Agreed. Even a point at MK Dons would have left us in the driving seat. We would only have needed a point from Stevenage to keep it in our hands on the last day.

If he performs exactly the same with that many goals and that many points then it will win us promotion barring freak performances by others to match what happened this season. Its up to other teams to match that to beat us if he performs EXACTLY THE SAME.
So would that be good enough for you?

Aren't you forgetting that his 35 goal talisman is rotting away in some Welsh prison!

I doubt he's "rotting away" and he's in a prison in Liverpool, not Wales. I would be amazed if we don't line up at the start of next season without at least one new striker, in Danny We Trust.

We need more than one new striker and we need at least one of them to be prolific at this level

What has that got to do with the question you asked which was about DW not any member of his squad.
I asked you if he performed EXACTLY THE SAME as you put it and he got us promoted would that satify you?

Read your reply - You mentioned goals and points - we need a goalscorer to get some goals - the points will follow!!!
We haven't got a goalscorer as prolific as that so Mr Wilson must go out and procure one (or magic one up!)

How do you know that the goalscorer isnt already here? No one expected Ched to score that many goals did they?
Given the squad that is there now we didnt get enough goals from our centrehalves or midfield (Willo apart)

What are you harping on about?
Again,- you started a debate about DWs performance. I mentioned that if DWs performance was exactly the same (as you said) with that return of points and goals and it got us promoted, would you be satisfied? That is not mentioning other members of the squad or club. It is DWs performance you were questioning. So come on stop hedging your bets and say one way or the other.
You have doubts about DWs ability in a 2nd season. You suggest he needs to up his performance in that 2nd season.
If he achieves EXACTLY THE SAME PERFORMANCE. and it gets us promoted will that satisfy you.
don't start mentioning players or transfers or loans or whatever else.

You set him a challenge "prove us wrong Mr Wilson" (although who the 'us' is not clear).
I set you a question which you are determined or too cowardly to answer straight.

First time poster here. Been lurking around the forum for a while and thought it was about time I contributed instead of merely stalking. :)

Flew over from Malta (lived here 30 years now) for last Saturday's final and dragged my Dad along with me. Not exactly the best result but I don't mind telling you I don't regret the 2500 mile round trip one bit. And, despite the result and our play-off jinx, I will certainly be there next time too! It's just got to be done.

Obviously, given the distance I don't see as many matches as I would like to and certainly not as many as most of you, but I have to say what I have seen of United this season has been a massive improvement on recent years. So credit to Wilson for that. And, let's be honest, it was only the decimation of almost our entire strike force which ultimately cost us automatic. Could Wilson have played the final differently? In my mind yes. A more attacking approach would possibly have served us better. But that's gone now and it's time to look forward.

Got a good and positive feeling about next season. Truly believe Wilson will dig out the players we need and automatic is on the cards.

Anyway, won't bore you any longer.

COYRAWW!

Did you meet a somewhat bemused bloke that goes by the name Jim Chimmerney on here a few years ago when we planned, then cancelled a pre-season tour of Malta???

I'm sure you an he will get on like a house of fire :D

I'm afraid youre wrong , there is no point to this thread

There is every point to the thread. Obviously you fall into the "I am happy with perpetual mediocrity brigade". Well I am not.

On the day, last Saturday and given the hand DW was dealt with I think he played it right. Without McDonald he was stuffed so probably hoped we could nick one or take to pens. I think Porter came on 10-15 mins too late but thought the lad did well under the circumstances.

Given United's position earlier in the season we failed abysmally. At the final hurdle given another chance we failed spectacularly. I think De Matteo or Ferguson or Martinez or Jones faced with exactly the same players and circumstances would have got us promoted.

DW has got the team playing attractive football but unlike Warnock seems to find it difficult to change a game late on back in our favour. I don't think DW should take much abuse but if I were him I would be really concerned that from the position we had we screwed up......again. And that is the tragedy of it all.

Stopped reading after that bollox

In DW we trust. I'm sure that most on here think they know a bit about football, what the team selection should be, formation, strength and weaknesses of opposition, the type of players we should target(budget permitting). But we are not the manager, Danny is, and as much as we think at times he's made mistakes, he will be is own harshest critic. He will get it right, because as much as I think know about football he will forgotten more than I'll ever know. But I still reserve my right to have an opinion, because it's my team as well as DW, but he gets paid for it for a reason, like all other managers he knows what he's doing(right/ or wrong).UTB. P.S there is one exception to the rule, that fucking ginger twat smegson, couldn't run a piss up in a brewery.

What are you on Boo - I'll have a pint of the same!!
In answer to your question YES if he achieves exactly the same performance and we get promoted I would be highly delighted but I believe his task will be so much harder as he has lost his main striker from last yearand the goalkeeper.
At present contracts are up for negotiation with his best two midfielders, Lowton, McGuire and Quinn could all go if decent offers come in so unfortunately Mr Wilson will first have to fill all the holes in the squad.
Based on his procurement record at the Blades, very hit and miss to put it mildly I do not have the confidence you appear to have in starting the season with a strong enough squad necessary to get automatic promotion!
But to re-iterate Boo, YES I would be very, very, very pleased if we went up next year!
Is that clear and brave enough for you!

It is strange how a pint of what I am on askes a straight question but someone who starts a thread with a question about DWs ability takes 4posts to answer that simple question.
Thank you for answering.
Yes i do have confidence in our current manager because we have some football to be proud of at last. with regard to your point about his squad being depleted I accept your argument that it will be hard to replace ched. That is DWs job though and I'm sure he will try to do that. as for the the others I don't see them as irreplaceable. I think though that Maguires contract is longer than others? so he may not be a worry at the moment.
Preston with their new manager have got rid of loads and brought in 10. how would you feel about that type of scenario? Another question for someone with little confidence in DW si who would you replace him with?

Most of the above is correct, but to add some balance, all of it was done "on a shoe-string".

Give the man a break, and do your last sentence.

Watch this space.................................................................................................

(but get off his back, whilst he gets on with his job).
well said, if wilson had the money i am sure he would be able to attract quality players like phillips and clarke.but is that not the blades way ? everything on a "shoestring" clarke now plys his trade at crawley ffs, getting blown out of the transfer market by the mighty CRAWLEY !

Its always difficult Boo
Yes Mr Wilson has got us playing very attractive football and achieving a creditable 3rd place overall but
We bottled it when it came to the last three games
We bottled it at Wembley
Both Huddersfield and Wendy were brave enough to swap managers even when they appeared to be succesful lying in 4th and 3rd places in the league and were succesful in their quest for promotion.
I believe that Mr Wilson can get them playing nice football but can he motivate them to go the extra mile - this season says No!

If he can add Motivation to his portfolio we don't need to replace him - he would be the ideal manager!!
