We finished on 38 points , warnock had achieved his objective of a point a game which normally would have been enough but that season one of the teams was using two world class players illegally and they got more than that and stayed up instead of us minusna 5m pound fine

One of them now plays for one of the best club sides ever and the other plys his trade at juventus after earning his owners over 100 million in transfer fees

Our away for was pretty dire, I remember we played at Man City they were absolute garbage the game was there for the taking and we were happy to take away a point, if we had shown some attacking desire we would have more than likely come away with all 3 points.
If Warnocks objective was a point a game then I would seriously doubt his intelligence

Warnock never stated he was looking to 38 points it was the percieved wisdom of the time from managers like curbishley and jewell that a point a game was enough and they would rest players against the bigger sides in order to take points from their rivals st the bottom end of the table

sounds like you are blaming the tevez scenario and not warnock, i suppose his transfer dealings were top notch too, geoff horsfield springs to mind for one instance what a fuck up that was

The only entity Warnock is a 'massive' fan of is himself. He's a fan of convenience. When he managed us he was a blade through and through but weeks afterwards and we were back to being called 'Sheffield'. I don't want him to manage the pigs as he's a prick but a decent manager; I think he'll do well for them which I don't want.

In my humble opinion, you can trace our current predicament all the way back to the January transfer window of the PL season. From memory, he bought in Stead, Kilgallon, Fahti and Shelton and only Stead did anything of note. Kilgallon wasn't ready for the PL (or good enough as subsequently proved) and Fahti and Shelton hardly played. To my mind, a proven PL midfielder (not necassarily a world beater but one with a PL record) would have made the one goal/point difference we needed. A player who would have played every game if fit. Instead, he spent a significant amount on players who did not get many first team games.

I was never a major fan of Warnocks but he did do an excellent job with United up to having money to spend and if you add up the money he spent on Horsfield, Akinbiyi, Shelton and Fahti, it comes to a significant amount (for us) and you could argue he wasted every penny.

To my mind, there was only one person who seemed to matter in NW's life and that was himself. If he got the SWFC job it would be another dose of nurishment for his inflated ego (again IMHO).

If he gets it and takes them down, I would love him forever and he would then become a Blades legend, which would pretty much sum up the relationship he has/had with many United fans.

Fahti for instance was a regular Egypt international. On the face of it its ridiculous that he wasn't considered good enough to play for SUFC in the first division. In such cases the manager should reflect on his own ineptitude at not being able to incorporate a gifted player but that doesn't seem to happen, managers are too arrogant for that.

Buying an international footballer and not playing him is as profligate as a man who can't tell the time buying a Rolex.

Hmm. Definitely a pattern here. Redknapp did exactly the same with Spurs and the England job which probably cost Spurs a CL place.

Can I suggest it depends on the country, I hardly think that regulars for American Samoa or St Vincent would be good enough for United. Given that the standard of Egytptian football is somewhat below that of the English PL, it;s not that great a surprise Fahti wasn't a regular.

The January window was an odd one. The Stead signing was near universally mocked by everyone, including me - I think I suggested it was Sunderland's revenge for us conning them out of £1m+ for Andy Gray. He turned out to be a cracking signing.

The Fathi/Shelton signings came across at the time as ones-for-the-future - using our position in the Premiership to attract two internationals while we could. I might be wrong, but I don't recall them being hailed as immediate starters. They showed both promise and nervousness in the handful of games they played - had Warnock stayed, I think he'd have used them more the following year.

Which begs the question why we were making long-term signings for a manager that only had 5 months on his contract, rather than high-impact signings to help ensure immediate success. NW clearly wanted better players. We were pipped by Blackburn for Stephen Warnock on financial grounds - yet by July we were in a lower league and raising the wage bill substantially. Similarly, he clearly wanted Jerome (his signing the previous January would have also meant we wouldn't have signed either Akinbiyi or Horsfield incidentally) but again we weren't prepared to pay the cash. Which we then splurged out that July for Beattie.

The signings at that time and in retrospect weren't great. Partly NW's fault - more so the Board's though.

Warnock told talkSPORT: "I did speak to Milan Mandaric last night (Thursday) and I think we both realised then that it wasn't going to be.

"When Milan phoned me originally I did tell him it would be pretty much impossible to manage Sheffield Wednesday when I'm a Blade, but he asked me to have time to think about it. He wanted me to try and keep them up.

That's not what either Warnock or Redknapp have said. NW always maintains he was offered it. According to Redknapp, he only made it apparent very late in the day that he was interested in going back to Pompey, after MM & NW had met. I forget the exact wording in 'arry's book but he quotes MM essentially saying "I need a quick answer whether you'll take it because if you will I need to tell Neil it's off".
