Not closing players down

Having seen the brief match highlights from today one thing is immediately clear. Not closing players down.

First goal conceded;

Ball is partly cleared. Some of the defenders aren't looking at the ball. Some seem to be looking at their player who is down. Their player has it just outside the box.



Then a quick flick With his oncoming team mate and all of a sudden - look how much space he is allowed;



Their player nearest the penalty spot could be marginally offside and appears to confuse the goalkeeper by sticking out his leg and before we know it its in the back of the net.



Then the cross prior to the penalty. Similar thing. Their player has the ball but is marked well.

However a simple pass backwards and suddenly, same again, lots of time for him to calmly cross into the box and O'connells arm goes up. Pen. Game over.

Closing players down and marking them more tightly must be addressed. Not rocket science.

thanks for posting that - been saying this for the past 4 or 5 years.

We have an abject inability in knowing it is a pre-requisite of being a footballer.

Successive managers/coaches have let teams come to BDTBL and close us down but not instil this discipline into our players.

Clueless.

Defenders defending much the same as last year,standing off and giving attackers room.

Never happens to our attackers,usually the other teams defenders are climbing all over the backs of our attackers.

United have been fukin hopeless at closing down in midfield and particularly at the edge of their own box. Its a fundamental basic of defence but it been staggering how many times we have been caught out with this. Admittedly the midfield have been either unable or not bothered enough to close down the opposition players but even so, its been a disgrace and happend far too often. Part of the problem is having a keeper who is weak at crosses and doesnt command his area whilst the likes f powder puff flatter to deceive Basham often win headers only to drop them dead central and 25 yards out thus only doing half a clearance job. In short we have had a piss.poor keeper, defence and midfield for ages and doesnt it show.
