I thinks it's a Bromeliad. They're from the South American tropics and are related to the pineapple. It should flower quite spectacularly if looked after properly.

After watching from the hill I wandered into the ground, then into the main stand & found myself standing next to McCabe [& I presumed Wilder's wife??], anyway we just shook hands & I congratulated him. No security nothing!
