Would have liked this at the start of the day

Transfer deadline day did not result in the Blades doing any business - in or out of Bramall Lane - but Gary Speed still has the loan market to explore should he wish to adjust his squad.

The new United boss had indicated that he would like to add a pacy player to his attacking options but also that he would not be crestfallen if it didn't happen.

With Premiership clubs set to offload some of their assets on loan when they have to finalise their 25 man squads on Wednesday of this week, there is likely to be some jostling for position by outfits wanting to add quality to their own rosters.

Meanwhile, three of United's Academy graduates have had their short term contracts extended until the end of June 2011.

Locals Jordan Chapell, Connor Brown (currently carrying a cruciate ligament injury) and Kingsley James have all figured to some degree in pre-season although Speed is quick to point out that their development must be sustained:

"They have done really well and coped with the increased demand of stepping up to training on a regular basis with the first team.

"They have impressed in getting where they are at the moment but they have also got a lot of work ahead of them to continue progress."

Also, building on the 25 man squad point, here's a post from someone on 365...

Well, it's impossible to know teams' intentions with U21s, as they don't get named. So we'll stick to "senior" players.

The only teams that currently hit 25 are Bolton, Fulham, Man City, Stoke, Spurs, West Brom and Wolves.

So, here's who looks at present at risk:

Bolton: No-one
Fulham: Eddie Johnson, then two of Diomansy Kamara/Pascal Zuberbühler/Fredrik Stoor/David Elm (I missed Dembele and Halliche off the original list, oops)
Man City: Robinho (going to Milan), David Gonzalez, Gunnar Nielsen, Kelvin Etuhu
Stoke: Mamady Sidibe (out for season), Ryan Shotton, Diego Arismendi (not sure when his loan ends at Barnsley). Shotton may get in if both Lawrence and Kitson go to Pompey in exchange for Wilson, freeing up a spot.
Spurs: Jonathan Woodgate (out forever)
West Brom: Luke Daniels, Dean Kiely (goalkeeping coach so won't go anywhere). Possibly Luke Moore if they decide to retain Daniels as a third keeper.
Wolves: Matt Hill, probably Carl Ikeme or dependent on injury, Michael Kightly.

Slim pickings it's got to be said...

yer like we,l be able to afford new player wages when the attendances are falling. its not the fact that weve not signed anyone that pisses me off its the fact that birch/McCabe have just blatently lied to the fans (yet again) and the newly appointed manager with all the weve got money too strengthen and were a club with ambition talk.

There are a few out of contract players around. Last season we signed Fortune and Camara on short, but permanent deals after the transfer deadline. Francis Laurent may not be ruled out yet for example.

Francis Laurent? Sounds like a mixture of Francis Joseph and Laurent Ten Heuvel.

I think Speed needs bit of Harry Redknapp. Their 'signing' of Van Der Vaart makes his 25 man squad alot more interesting

3 keepers (Gomes Cudicini Czech Fella)
8 Defenders (Corluka Gallas Bassong Kaboul King Dawson Bale Ekotto)
10 Midfielders (Lennon Bentley Sandro Jenas Palacios Huddlestone Modric Dos Santos Kranjcar Van Der Vaart)
4 Strikers (Defoe, Pavfella, Crouch, Keane)
=25

Men out so far
O'Hara - Operation could be back in a month
Danny Rose - Left Winger
Hutton - Right back

I don't think Rose has gone anywhere has he?

What about those fellers from up North? Walker and Naughton? Maybe they will get a game elsewhere now Blackie has gone.

Rose might be a useful loan as well.

Don't forget that under 21s don't need to be registered though and therefore may be retained for depth... or give their 'number' to an over 21.

Of course, you're quite right there Houso, me old strap on.
The tranny deadline is not worth getting your knickers in a twist over.
There's no value in any of it.
Best to pick up a few loans and a couple of out of contract players I guess.

You've neglected to mention Woodgate, who even as we speak is being taken to the vets to be shot and turned into dog food.

ahh for some reason I had it in my head it was u19's hence kyles's off the list

So no one is hammering at McCabes door wondering once more where the f**k is the money. I said when Speed took over and there was "money to be spent" that f**k all would happen and guess what, old chastity Kev has managed to go another window without spending a penny.

Its a shame, because next home game all those who said they would renew when Blackwell left won't have (because most of them are all wind and piss) and there will be a few more who shrug their shoulders and say "bollocks to this, if he isn't going to get his hand in his pocket then neither are we".

Reading between the lines it appears that no one on the message boards is that surprised. Apathy is the death of many fine things.

Ruled out now though...

"Meanwhile, United have elected to part company with French trialist Francis Laurent. The former Southend forward, who can also operate in midfield, had been training at Shirecliffe after a brief spell with Coventry earlier this summer."
