My stepson played local football and didn't play for an academy until he was invited for a trial at 15.

Ultimately, he was one of the three players who were offered scholarships. He had been at the club eight months, whilst many of the lads had been there since they were eight years old.

Academy football is a heartless, cut throat business with no room for sentiment, being an academy star at ten year old is no guarantee of success but conversely, playing local football is not necessarily a bar to a future professional career.
