I mentioned Traore to try and illustrate the level of Swedish serie A as I had said it was below the level of the Championship because I'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been the leading goalscorer at Championship level.
I've spent a lot of time in Sweden even living there for a few years and am on my way home from there now.I've seen plenty of top level Swedish football and trust me t7hink Scottish Premier not Championship. Some clubs would struggle at efl league 1.
Having said that plenty of Swedish footballers have been successful in English football and this lad could well prove to be an astute signing. Just trying to add a sense of proportion.
Last centre back we signed from Malmo did a good job, without playing in Prem or Championship ? Let's hope lightning strikes twice...

Got to be happening now Fabrizio has said it, thankfully.

I asked my wife how do you pronounce his name , as she speaks Swedish as well as Finnish, she couldnt do it and said its a weird surname as Swede's dont usually have surnames that start with Z - guess we'll now soon find out.
Neels SET-ter-struhm......according to AI....and when did that ever get anything wrong!

Any Swedish-based Blades give us a review?

Background: came through Malmö FF’s excellent academy. 2024 was his first year in senior football and had 10 starts. So far this season he has 7 starts. Never been a constant starter or a solid performer over time which is sort of worrying me. The more exposure a young player gets the more data points are accumulated and we tend to be able to make a better prediction. But I am concerned that he has only been given the nod when they’ve had challenges with injuries and suspensions. However, I disagree with the general quality being L1, it would be to simplify things. See my post from last night about that particular discussion and my counter examples.

Back to Nils and Malmö: they have mostly played a 3-5-2 formation but opted to use Busanello and Stryger (two wing-backs) at centre back rather than Zetterström which tells us something about something and where in the hierarchy he is in their squad. And if I am not mistaken he has been excluded from the full match day squad at least once. They have have preferred Pontus Jansson and Colin Rösler (+ Busanello and Stryger) and since Andrej Djuric joined them from Red Star a few weeks ago he has found himself further down in the pecking order.

Meaning we are making a significant investment on a player Malmö (who has struggled all season) has been looking to send on loan or sell due to limited opportunities. But - there is potential for sure. However, in line with my argument for signing BT (all my posts on that subject quite interesting to read!) - as long as we have done our due diligence and know exactly what we are signing, I am fine with this. But the club must have a long-term plan (development, utilisation etc) and also communicate with the supporters what we should expect. Otherwise we are making a big mistake.

I cant see him having an impact for us this year, if even next year. It’s always difficult to predict how young players (without much experience) develop but I am not super enthusiastic about this one (short term). But if the recruitment team firmly believe that this is our guy (long-term), we will find out and hopefully they do have a plan for him. We shall see.

A few things I like with him:
  • Decent physique for his age
  • Left-footed
  • Can break lines with his passing

I would try to avoid simply it like that. It's a lot more complex and referring to one player, one case would be using anecdotal evidence to prove your theory. In that case I would like to put forward a few names that have done quite well after leaving that same league: Odilon Koussouno, Yasin Ayari, Nat Adjei, Sebastian Nanasi, Oliver Dovin, Malick Yalcouyé, Bazoumana Touré, Hugo Larsson, Samuel Dahl, Youssef Salech, Torbjörn Heggem, Jacob Ondrejka, Isak Hien etc.

All players have to be evaluated individually based on their abilities and characteristics. I said before we signed BT that he eventually would become a very good player. But I was also very clear on my view that I could not really understand why we would sign him as I felt his style of play would fit better elsewhere. Now he is about to leave the Swiss league as one of the most expensive players ever.

I feel if we had started well we'd be saying this is the sort of signing we should be making with one eye on the future. As it is, I worry people will expect him to be a starter immediately and when Selles doesn't play him it will be more ammunition against him

Yeah I’m waiting for Roygbiv to clear up any confusion……

He only needs to be ahead of Dovy and RND to be an immediate starter. He must be if we're spending £3m on him

It's a lot of money on someone that is seemingly so far off being ready.

If we have plenty of cash and have all our ducks in a row with re: the first team, then I'm all for this type of signing.

However, if it's preventing us from bringing in players ready to help us in a promotion battle then I'm not sure it's a wise allocation of resource.
The time to judge will be at the end of the window, but the strategy still feels a little confused to me.
