Clough and Adkins played Coutts in largely the same way. They both tried him on the right and in the middle in a 3. Coutts played his best pre-Wilder football under Adkins during the month of December when he was playing on the right and could see the Man U game on the horizon. Towards the end of the season, I think several players had decided they wanted Adkins out and Coutts was one of the main culprits for playing like a twat because he didn’t like the manager. He’d shown what he could do throughout December but couldn’t be arsed. Wilder had identified that and stuck him straight on the transfer list when he arrived. Perhaps that was a moment of epiphany for Coutts. He maybe knew it was now or never in terms of saving a career that was going down the toilet.

Adkins didn’t have the room for maneouvre to bring his own squad in and I think the squad knew that and that he was powerless to change the dressing room culture. Wilder came in with half the squad out of contract, he was going to bring in his own men and the remaining players had to either adapt or fuck off.

He had no manoeuvre when some players had deals in place that they could take up a one extension on their contract. James Wallace being the one I recall having the power to activate the year extension.

Clough and Mal had been giving players who were not fit when they signed for us 3 to 4 year deals on the hope they would come good! Clearly due diligence with regards to signing players went completely out of the window while Clough was in charge.

The first season under Clough was a good one with some decent counter attacking football and pace but that second season was dire once he added more of his own signings to the squad.

I always liked Clough, he took no shit from the Media and was concerned not with being a nice bloke, but doing everything in his power to improve the on-field side of things.

I still like Clough and it was great to see Burton stay up last season. Personally i'd like them to stay up this season, but hope we get a decent result at Burton tomorrow.
Clubs like Burton should not be in the Championship total Noddy outfit
Mid 4th Division tops and thats all Clough is fit to manage

But they are and on merit which makes our failures over the last six seasons even worse. Clough wasn’t good enough to deal with the toxic issues at the lane and arguably he contributed to them. But take nothing away from the achievements of Burton putting many bigger clubs to shame.

Completely agree. There's the Collins argument like you've said. In this thread he gets accused of having no scouting department AND of having had the biggest backroom of all time. He gets slaughtered for signing Brayford when the vast majority at the time were delighted.

The argument that Adkins had no chance to succeed because of the wage bill had been left with is laughable. I heard about one (thankfully unsigned) contract offer that had been made by Adkins before Wilder arrived and I would say it would've represented a far bigger waste of money than anything Clough did. And that's without mentioning Hammond.

I read some of the stuff that people post on here about ex-managers who did average / good / excellent jobs and it's clear that the idea of Once a Blade, Always a Blade doesn't apply to our old gaffers.

Was the unsigned contract George Long?

Nigel Clough, complex man, football man through and through, generally 'serious' mainly 'surly' and seemingly always 'on the defensive'.

Had a bigger opportunity before Wilder had later and blew it - got too political, power conscious, exceeded his authorities. The whole entity of SUFC was there for him to lead, control and nurture for years to come and he lost the eye for the main objective and fought and lost his battles at lower levels.

Good 'backs against the wall' manager, seige mentality, grab a goal and defend for your lives.

Poor in the transfer market, relied too much on his brother. Any manager is on;y as good as his management of his budget.

No 'big vision', no 'big picture', more 'here and now'.

When he was appointed he was from a different pedigree than we ever hoped for or expected. Maybe it all came too early for him after his Derby shock.

In simple terms he was not a big enough leader to understand the size of the task or the incremental stages needed. He did stage 1 superbly but Stage 2 was so obviously destined for failure. Then he splashed the cash and set us back a couple of years.

Maybe not a racist, but didn't sign enough black players at Derby or here. Every team needs black players, it's so obvious. He seems to have learned his lesson since he left us.

A manager like Clough - serious, negative, miserable, cautious - needs a different type of personality at No.2. It was Garner I never liked and would never trust and he was twice as dire than Clough was. Clough needs an 'upper' as No.2, just like Wilder needs the steady eddy bloke who complements him rather than exaggerates his weaknesses.

To return to the OP. The appreciation society doesn’t seem to have many members who post on here.

Maybe it should try a recruitment campaign somewhere else. Ideally amongst supporters who don’t know how poor he actually is i.e where he hasn’t managed.

Unfortunately judging by some of the likes dished out it seems like there are still plenty who are too blinded by the cup runs to see the many many negatives and how they far outweighed the positives. Nothing gives me a bigger sense of detachment when it comes to United than knowing how many of our fans accepted and even embraced Clough and what he was doing. He was so emphatically wrong for us in every way.

can't understand the vitriol he is getting on here ....yes I know his faults ..I realise that many of his signings were poor..he didn't address the centre half , centre forward problem.....we had a incredibly lightweight team ...we were cautious and negative especially as we were in league one . for me however...I will always remember the 2 cup runs, they were fantastic ..I will be thankful to Clough for the excitement of those cup runs ..and 3 brilliant semi final performances....I know he wasted money with many of his signings , but he also made some very good signings that are now helping our cause in the Championship..another positive is that he gave many of our young players opportunities and he brought into the club unexpected monetary windfalls with those cup runs , the bonus of extra attendances ,extra sky TV money ( this was substantial), the Che Adams signing...for me he definitely left the club in a better position then when he took over.

I agree he is well suited to helping Burton with fighting relegation with his cautious defensive approach,,,,,,he did a great job for us in his first year..we were in trouble when he joined us...as were Derby when he joined them ...I heard it said about him that each year he has managed a club they finish higher in the league every year ...so not a bad record for a manager if that is true,,if he can do that again this year at Burton it would be pretty amazing.

For all his faults,I am part of the appreciation society.....it seems Chris Wilder is too!!.... I always give him a good reception when he brings his teams to play against us ...and good luck to him at Burton ....apart from when they play us of course.

I thank NG for stemming the flow when it seemed nailed on we were going to get relegated under Weir

I thank him for the semi finals

That's it though. His turgid boring football drove me mad. I missed games at the Lane because of his negative tactics. I couldn't face sitting there bored to tears at Mr Negativity

I was one that wanted him out. Only problem with that was we got another one who performed worse than NG did and tbh, I didn't see that coming

I’ve certainly got no bitterness towards Brian’s lad , came in and did a great rescue job the first season after Weir car crash experiment .
Undoubtedly the highlights were the two cup runs and some great performances , Villa , Southampton, QPR ,West Ham ,Spurs , Charlton and not to mention a great day a Wembley playing some decent football some great days in a dark time us so for the above I’m great full, so I’ll say my thanks to Nige for them .
Ultimately though your judged on your bread & butter .. the league campaign and unfortunately he came up well short here .
He had the finances more than a few of his predecessors had not but we seemed to go backwards after bringing in his own players .
After the impressive first season and some decent football I was confident that after he’d added to the squad with his own names we’d be well up there , but by Christ we took one step forward & 10 back .
Some of the football turgid and going out 451 at home in a league averageness was awful to watch , Coventry & Crewe at home spring to mind , culminating in the farcical play off against Swindon. Every paying Blade that season could see we desperately needed a good centre half , a Morgan type ball winning organiser , the obvious gap was the size of the Humber Estuary that had been there since Maguire departure & Collins fall out was there for all to see & when Clogh came on after and said what a great great performance the 5-5 was where the third year at Handsworth Grange defended better that was the last nail in his coffin for me .
Cloughies a manager who sides play dogged counter attacking football but unfortunately didn’t have a plan B when other sides came and did the same .
Thanks for the rescue & cup runs Nige and hope you get a round of applause , but the football we play now is more like your fathers brand & what the paying punter wants to go and see & one I’m sure he’d be extolling it’s virtues of if he was still around .
We’ve moved on a million miles now from your tenure . So it’s thanks & goodbye from JSTW.

Interesting that Burton fans have a similar complaint about him signing Brayford this season given all his injury problems.

I can’t get on board with that sort of snobbery. Generally speaking, clubs are where they deserve to be. Being big or small doesn’t affect a club’s right to play in a division. Burton have done fantastically well to reach the championship and several managers along the way (Clough, Rowett, Hasslebaink, Clough again) have all played their part. They deserve great credit for being where they are. How sustainable that is might be another matter.

Far from snobbery
Non league ground
Non league fans
Non league manager.
I was talking to some of their fans last night and they agreed with me they are punching way above their weight.

I cant hate Clough because without him, we could well have gone down to League 2 and probably never have come back. And if we were ever in a position where we looked like heading for a relegation battle, I’d take him back in a shot for a short spell.

He makes teams tough to beat and grinds out points, which is incredibly tedious to watch but effective when your in a scrap and every point is precious. Clearly thats no use in a promotion push, which is why McCabe was right to move on (at the time Adkins looked a great move).

To me Clough’s a Steady Eddie- a guy you bring in to keep you up/steady the ship. A lower league Sam Allardyce.

Pretty much agree with that. Grateful to Clough for getting us out of a right mess, the cup runs, and bringing the best out of some of the players in the squad then. Made a mess of things latterly with big contracts for terrible players, but he wasnt on his own in making that mistake.

Absolutely they are. Very well done to all that have contributed to it
