Nice nod to captain marvel too.

I’ve worked for some great managers in the past and learnt tons from them. From others, absolutely nothing at all.

A good read. No doubt some fucknugget or two will be along to explain how despite not being football managers they know more about Monty than past managers did, and that despite almost 400 appearances for United he was rubbish.

Same people who hated Doyle and Quinn too. Till they're gone. Same with Fellieni too has to be a reason 3 managers have stuck with him.

Doyle frustrated me at times, always playing the easy pass, mainly 'backwards' after all he was our holding midfielder, ironically in his last season with us, he played a forward looking mid field role and I thought he looked great, probably the best mid fielder we had at that time - then we let him go? Monty always gave 100% he never had the 'glory' midfielder role but was the work horse and scored the od goal, Think he score one famous goal from about 30 yards but can't quite remember the occasion?

Tranmere away, wasn't it?

Tranmere I think we drew. 1-1

With Monty though, you couldn't doubt his engine and his want to be involved in the game. Technically though, he was a fucking liability. If you could distil the giftedness of Glyn Hodges (for example) into Monty, you'd have Paul Scholes or N'Golo Kante. He would run for 90 plus, but he struggled to control the ball and struggled to find people with the pass, even at short range.

That is why people regarded him as cack (I don't think he was cack, he was limited in what he could do in such a key area of the pitch), and because of his shortcomings, I didn't mourn too much when he went.

Oh well..I'll be the first fucknugget then...

Montgomery reminded me a lot of Bob Booker. Very little skill but willing to bust a gut for the team. I thought his passing was poor, his dribbling was non-existent and his shooting was wayward. But, as a competitive, battling, midfielder, who gave no quarter, he was a valuable asset to the team. Sometimes I used to watch him and think, "how the hell did he ever become a professional footballer?" but somehow he did - and he's made a very good career out of it.

I can't honestly say he was a player that I liked a great deal. That may be because I'm a fucknugget, or it may be because I'd been brought up on a rich diet of talented Sheffield United footballers from the early 1970's - and that set the bar a bit high for me for the future. I have to admit, I don't get all excited and start purring "Blaaade" just because someone runs their ass off. I expect them to have a bit of skill as well. Monty fell short for me - and I was glad when he eventually moved on. But I did appreciate the effort he put in and hope the lad has a long and happy retirement.

His ability has been debated to death since the dawn of SUFC internetery.

When all is said and done he gave the club 14 years of his life and never once hid, shirked a tackle or gave anything less than his best.

I wouldn't class Monty as a legend but as we cast a glance at some of the mercenaries that have been through our midfield since, he's undoubtedly earned a respectful appreciation and should always be welcome at BDTBL

I think he deserves his legendary status, lesser players have that tag and some unsung heroes (like Petr Katchuoro) you hardly hear mentioned in passing. Monty never disappeared in a game (like Doyle sometimes did). It's just his end product didn't match the energy. If it did, we'd have sold him a lot earlier and go the Desso ten years ago*.

*see what I did there, readers?

They say you only recognise their assets to the team when they leave.

In any of the 5 seasons that followed his departure, he'd have walked into the team.

Top boy, really nice interview and I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him return to Bramall Lane one day in coaching or management capacity. He wasn't my favourite player but you can't knock his attitude and endeavour.

He deserves to be called a blades legend. I remember watching all the games he played for the blades!. I remember some of his tackles! I think some of the opposition players still have the scars even now!!. glad he gave a mention to captain marvel!. Bloody good read.

Couldn't agree more - but that is a measure of how gash we quickly became as key players went. By the 2015-16 season we were practically bereft of real ability out there and Monty would have possibly been our Coutts of today - has something about him but is surrounded by shite and led by a a gash manager. Monty wasn't surrounded by anything near the level of bobbar we had in the season before last. They'd have made him look like Matic, Toure or Nicky Butt.

Never a massive Monty fan and it's interesting that he wants to show his kids where he "ran around for 14 years". Pretty much sums him up............

BUT!

He was part of a team that played some good stuff at times and his hard work enabled the likes of Brown and Tonge to flourish. No player has worked consistently harder on a football pitch over such a long period of time and I doubt many, if any, have covered more miles at BDTBL than Monty did. Glad he's settled and happy in Oz and will always be welcome at BDTBL................

Although maybe not on the coaching staff!;)

Having said that, his outside of the foot through ball that he developed later in his time at United was a joy to behold:)

Not true. Monty and Quinny were both part of the best United team we've seen in over twenty years. Doyle the worst.

My recollection is that Monty was one of the players who stepped up in the Prem and did a number on several opposition Fancy Dans, marking them out of the game. I still think we will need someone with those destructive qualities this coming season.

And he seems a lovely chap, an' all.

The werewolf did much the same job in the early 70's. Pass the ball and give it to Tony (Spelt Tongey for Monty?) - every team should have one!

The Magic Is Back

loved nick Montgomery & with greatest of respect he is proof that effort can be more important than talent because Tonge had the most natural abilty but often couldn't be arsed, but Montgomery is guy who would be 1st on every teamsheet because he would run til he dropped. almost like Kante if he couldn't pass 10yds or shoot
