Next season reality check

I ve seen several posts on here that seem to think next season we ll be back in the mix for promotion or even automatic.
Not a hope in hell in my opinion.

First of all, the manager situation.
Its been 6 weeks now since Widers departure and we are still no closer to a definate replacement. If the powers that be are serious about our return to the so called best league in the world ,surely someone of substance would have been brought in by now. We dont even look close to signing anyone of note. Knowing our history it is going to be either Heckinbottom or Tindle. In which case God help us.

Now the squad.
High chance Berge will be gone , if not in the close season then definitely by January. Similarly with Egan, JOC and maybe Ramsdale and Baldock.

Leaving us with a nucleus of who exactly?

Billy, McGoldrick and Basham. All good solid pro's but ageing.

Jimmy (not John) Fleck. Norwood. Stevens. All of them half the players they were last season. Osborn, Busy player with potential in Championship
Bryan, Lowe, Bogle. Inconsistent at best
Rodwell and Robinson, medicore Championship level. Jags, excellent pro but ancient.

And an attack force of:
Mcburnie, hardly a prolifict goalscorer. Brewster, (did we really pay £23 million????) not a sniff of a goal in 24 appearnces. Burke. speed of a cheetah, football ability of a cheetah. Mousset (see Burke)

Lundstrum, well we all know his situation. The thing that worries me most is, who in their right mind will come in for him even on a free. Please dont let him stay.

I know we have bright prospects in some of our youngsters but knowing us of old they will not be given the opportunity of first team football with us but most likely be off loaded cheap.

Unless we get a manager who knows the championship well, and can motivate this depleted, lack of confidence bunch we currently have , then we are screwed. He will also need to be backed to bring in good quality players at this level. Our history does not bode well in this case.

I predict another long hard season in which we will finish bottom half. I hope I'm wrong and will be happy to be proved so.

Tin hat now on.
Pros(plural)not pro’s. It does not belong to the pro or the pros. Incidentally, if it belongs to the pros it is pros’. The bell is for me not for you. Class dismissed.

I'm looking forward to games without VAR, games where we can actually celebrate goals without having to stop after a few seconds whilst tea and cake is served at stockley park!
Match day that actually has a buzz about it again, the sound, the atmosphere of the Lane, the possibility of actually winning games again!!
What will be will be, but I'm sure we wont go down to league 1 straightaway, we have enough quality to finish mid table surely!?
It's been done to death but the problem with VAR is those using it not the system.

For instance, in recent memory, we would have drawn on Saturday were it not for VAR picking up a clear offside.

Then cast a glance to the most recent Championship matches at the wrong end of the table:
Wednesday drew with Bristol City, in part due to City playing the game with 10 men. Replays confirmed the player sent off for handball didn't touch it.

Rotherham lost a 1-0 lead after going down to 10 men, and eventually lost vs Boro, when most observers on both sides thought a sending off was the wrong decision. A game winning position turned to a defeat.

Then on Saturday once more, the Millers lost by a goal that VAR would certainly have chalked off.

Yes, the armpit nonsense is just that and needs resolving but you have 4 calls there, all of which you could argue would have changed the end result, were pretty clear cut on second viewing, but which were not picked up in a VARless set up.

Be careful what you wish for 😁

Fire power of Hatton Edwards and Morris Central midfield of Trusson and Matthews MacPhail and Kenworthy,Kenworthy getting 16 goals that season .We didn't get beat at home that season beating the European Champions Arsenal 1.0 and taking them to extra time at Arsenal you sure
Were any of her capable of playing Premiership football ?

Do we get to celebrate goals instead of waiting 5 mins for someone 150miles away to decide if we can celebrate or not........... the answer is yes, so, with the greatest of respect, I will be over the moon to welcome back proper football!

I'm as sceptical as any regards our immediate future but actually I think we have a strong squad for the championship. But the telling point will be new manager getting it right and giving the whole squad a fresh clean slate. Along with who goes and who stays.

Think People forget what form and confidence does. We had form and confidence up until pandemic hit. This team looked like it would give anyone a game. Year before we were worthy promotion winners. This season look back at early games we played with more energy. As the season has gone on confidence has naturally dropped and injuries have hindered further.

We ain't a shoe in to be promoted but this squad especially in the champ can v.much do it in the right environment

How exactly do you know we're no nearer to appointing a manager?
You don't. It's probably signed, sealed and delivered.
Because of this I didn't read beyond that statement.

Watford seem to change managers almost weekly, and they've come straight back up.

I watched PA's interview again yesterday, and he stated the Board were so committed to CW/AK there was no plan B. I think he's written off this season and he's taking his time to get the appointment right.

He also seems pretty level headed about most things, including sales and acquisitions. I'm confident we will be competitive next season, and this talk of dropping through the leagues like Northampton is just talk.

I dont EXACTLY know, we are no nearer to appointing a manager.
But if 'its probably signed sealed and delivered' why has there been not a sniff of this from A) the bookies, B) the press, or C) The Board?

The side that won the 4th division would, in my opinion beat this team without a doubt
No it wouldn't. Get real. Even without taking account of 40 years of sports science since then, the games against the two Bristol clubs and Plymouth this season showed that a side completely bereft of confidence etc were still a gulf in class apart. Scoreline doesn't always tell the full story (Man City v Tottenham yesterday) but you could really see the difference in those games.

Even though we beat Brighton,
You could see the difference in quality of most of their players, but we worked hard and defended as well as we could with the players we had
There have been many close games we have lost by 1 goal , and sometimes against the tun of play, or due to us being penalised every time we tackle someone.
With JOC & Berge & Sharp bailable we will be a different side
Rammers has learnt a lot and in my opinion been excellent of late, and with a restored solid back 5 we will be tough to score against
We do need to replace Burke & McB & probably a decent midfielder
Then hopefully back on the merry go round of premier league crap
But with a better idea of what we need to do

This, and I don't think there's any harm in us taking our time. Whoever would've come in with a significant amount of the season left would've been on a hiding to nothing. With the squad as it is there's very little anyone could've changed. And if they get off to the horrendous start they no doubt would have, it just would've undermined any confidence in them before they had a chance.

Ideal scenario is we have someone lined up, communicating with the club and the likes of Tindall about the current state of things, and we appoint them at a time where they can have the Summer and a fresh start next season. Not playing out some losses.

If it's actually the case that the board are nowhere near a new manager that would be bad, but we have no reason to think that's the case. If anything the speculation has been "done deal" only to find out it's not done yet.

I bet you're fun at a parties.

None of us know anything about the current recruitment situation, even the local press are in the dark.

Every prem club that drops down has to find £40m to fill the income hole. Berge has come in, not made a huge impression on the team so to lose him for £25m/£30m wouldn't be a nightmare.

Egan and Baldock might stay but if a Prem club comes in with big money for both transfer fee and wage offer to the player, are you going to stand in their way? Nope.

You, me, the new manager all have no idea how Fleck, Norwood or Stevens will respond to a full preseason and a new manager and ideas.

The rest of the players you have slagged off, are all decent Championship players, Bogle looks comfortable in the lower prem in fact.

You are talking absolute negative nonsense regarding the forwards, they are all proven Championship goalscorers. Mousset could respond well to a new setup, pre season and lower quality defenders.

You say our history does not bode well with transfer backing. HRH backed Wilder to unprecedented levels since taking sole ownership.

"not a sniff"?
There's been. lots of rumour, even stating it is indeed a done deal. And if that is the case why would they tell us yet, especially given our current state.
We need a complete new start for next season, a new manager being announced now makes little sense.

Very true, theres been lots of rumours. But thats all they are , rumours. John Terry, Michael Appleton, Eddie Howe, all of which have been simply newspapers trying to sell copy. Nothing of any substance.
Yes I agree we need a complete new start for next season. But why would a new manager being announced now make little sense????
Announcing it now in my opinion would give the fans something to focus on. And more to the point give the players some kind of focus too.
Feel free to disagree, its what football is about. Differing opinions.

If you’re comparing players you have to compare the opposition
So you think that today's football slowly playing out from the back teams e.g. Tottenham yesterday Harry Kane,Lucas Moira,Son,not having one shot at goal, our centre forward not in double figures 23 goals in total this season when our Central defender scored 16 himself do me a favour 😂

Not a chance, they were not that great and certainly not as fit as current players.
Our squad are full of god Championship players, they were not.
Fit 😂 How many times do I have to say it watch the 1966 World Cup final, watch Alan Ball see how much ground he covers again I'll say football didn't start in 1992 fit watch Harry Maguire he jogs through game only when he's called upon to defend does he have a problem

There wasnt a 1st division manager who tried hard enough to sign either player
Kenworthy was on his way to Norwich City Peters had sold him that season Everton,Nottingham Forest,Leeds United even Derby County when Mike Watterson owned them I know David Pleat rang him personally Luton Town.Kenworthy to his credit stayed, he loves S.U.F.C he loves Sheffield and Sheffield people. He told me personally that he's now a supporter and he's envious of the supporters been able to go to the Lane every other week (before covid)

Norwich lost their last 9 premier league games scoring a single goal to finish on 21 points. They then sold Godfrey and Lewis pre season...

The Championship is of a dreadful standard at present, I will however say that 46 games over 38 does make a difference. Now is a great chance to get straight back up with some sensible transfers in and out. We may not romp the league but the suggestion we will go down again are to me farcical.

Just watch sone of the highlights of our great promotion season 18-19. The space players are afforded with the ball and the drop off in speed of the game from the Premier League are huge. Wilder himself said this after our first few Premier League games.

Precisely. Do we think the team we have now is worse than the Norwich team last season? Queue people screaming "YES!!". I dont think it is. Yeah we will need reinforcements and likelihood some of the band will go. If the rumours of Berge are true, sorry, snap Liverpool or Man City's hands off. Ramsdale I believe is committed to staying at the club, so far I havent heard any decent from JOC and Egan. Why are the gloom merchants in full swing? Lets try a happy medium. No, I dont think we will storm the Champ next season at the moment. Why? Because there are too many variables. Lets see who comes in as manager, and then see what they decide on players staff. Then we can say, next season we can do this or oh no league one beckons.

Yeah, but Norwich went out and attacked a few teams and scored goals. It was only when they were down that they gave up and conceded loads. I know its true cos I read it on here.

*For the purposes of reality check
Norwich after 19 games was W3 D2 L14 F19 A37 Pts11

Of the 14 loses, 8 of them were by 2 goal margin or more including a 5 against and a 4 against. Of the 19 goals for, 10 of them were in 4 games (meaning 9 goals in the other 15 games) including 3 against Man City and Newcastle, and 2 against Everton (just before they sacked their manager) and a 2 all draw against Arsenal.

That doesn’t justify your argument that the team of 1981/2 in the 4th Division would beat a premier league team 40 years later. Kenworthy also took& scored quite a few penalties in his 15 goals total.
I think Kane & co would certainly have had a few shots on goal against Hartlepool, York, Darlington et al
