A man that has won the coppa italia several times, Serie A, EUFA cup, Cup Winners Cup & Champions League runners up. Managed Benfinca, Man City, Lazio & Sampdoria and is the most successful england manager in 60+ years is deemed not good enough for Sheffield United, bottom of the third tier of English football?

I'd be gobsmacked if Sven would even consider managing SUFC and if he did, I'd be chaining him to the goalposts before he changed his mind!

Interesting read that Sothall mate!

The thing that puts me off with Sven more than anything is his lack of lower league experience. In my own personal opinion I think it is much easier to be a manager at a top league club. With money at your disposal you can go out and buy any player you want and these players are the ones who go and win you games.

Without the class act players that Sven has been fortunate enough to have had at his disposal would he have been half as successful?

Different kettle of fish this one mate. He won't have his match winners that he has had in the past, he will have League One players. Would he be able to get the same out of this bunch of players?

He's not always worked at top clubs and with top class players though.
He managed Degerfors to promotion from the Swedish 3rd Division in 1978.
He then joined Gothenburg and won the Swedish League, Swedish Cup and Uefa Cup treble in 1982.
At many of his other clubs he had them performing above their usual station (e.g. Lazio).
He's worked at Notts County, Leicester and Guangzhou in China more recently.

Sven will bring some quality lovelies from the more mature end of the market. For a fairly ordinary looking bloke he has a reputation of somewhat of a swordsman. Take Nancy Del Oliveoil. Admittedly she witters on a bit, but that wouldn't be a problem when she's got her mouth full.

She looks saucy enough here. Apologies for it being a link to the Daily Mail.

Ulrika'ka'ka'ka maybe SV mate, not too bothered about that Nancy bird personally, always found her as an extra from spitting image!

I agree to some extent hpb but isn't it all relative? Is it that he got more out of his game changers than the other top managers he was up against? In which case could we expect him to get more out of our lower league game changers than other league 1 managers?

I'm not sure one way or the other really, none of the names in the frame excite me.

UTB

965 games managerial experience with a 52% win record and averaging 1.81 points per game (83 per season).
17 major trophies (not just promotions and play-offs, actual shiny things for winning leagues and cups).

Could you tell me what he has won since he left Lazio (2001) please.

Don't get me wrong to an extent I agree with your points and Sothalls points but I do wonder as to whether we are all just grabbing at the big name without looking at the overall picture. A name like Sven would be massive for us and has a handful of benefits coming with it however I just wonder what experience he would have with this squad and this league that is all. We are already at the back of the pack this year and we don't want a gamble of another 6 months learning the ropes without any impact.

Notts County won the League Two title when he was their until February in 2010.
Other than that, the obvious answer is that he's won very little since 2001 but still more than Clough, Barker, Robinson, Abbot(!), Morgan, Appleton, O Leary(!) and most of the other favourites.

Why hasn't he won much since 2001?
Would you expect him to win the World Cup or Euros with England?
He got us into the last eight, three times running which is about as good as you would expect.
We haven't done that since and we'd settle for it in Brazil.
Mexico and Ivory Coast were never going to win the World Cup either.
Man City (pre-investment) were never going to win the English league etc..

He wasn't the Notts C manager. He was director of football.

I can't knock him for what he did with England but every team he managed prior to England you would expect silverware. All world famous clubs.

Gothenburg, Sampdoria, Lazio, Benfica etc.

I think he had a massive say in Leicester's demise. Reminds me of Bryan Robson, will spend shit loads of money and that's it. Sometimes, he'll be lucky enougfh to have the foundations currently in place to build on (with the clubs above). Other times he'll just spunk the money up the wall and royally fuck it up. Didn't he spend about £3m on Matthew Mills? FFS!!!

I will get behind him if appointed but i feel we should tread VERY carefully if he's appointed.

It all sounds a bit Blackburnesque.. Rich people playing with a club that has been loved for years. "We'll just buy him, that will work"

Doesn't sven manage a chinese side?? Surely if we had approached him lots of people would know about it

With jim phipps putting this on twitter we must be close. Its like saying we have just signed someone but are awaiting international clearance.

"Not ready to announce this AM. Please hang tight, Blades!"

For me the bar has been set at Clough and one of the up and coming managers in our division in Robinson, Smith, Barker etc; they need to be in or around the game now

Anything below this is not acceptable in my eyes and before someone wets their pants I am talking Greg Abbott, David O'Leary and Sven etc;

Fucking Greg Abbott touting himself. He has one thing in common with Weir, he also left his club at the bottom of the division.

For the sven lovers he's now moved in massively to 6/4, will be odds on by end of teatime according to bookies. Massive move from the 8/1 this morning!.

There's been a bit of a move for David O'Leary this afternoon

33s into 8s today, clear 4th fav

Don't know whether this has been mentioned before but my own choice/target for a new manager would be Nigel Adkins. Not sure what kind of deal he's got at Reading (probably still cheaper than trying to get Sven) or if he'd be even intereseted (probably not) but he has obviously brought Southampton up from League 1 through to the prem which is after all our own aim under the prince.

Anyway just my 2p worth.

Cheers

Dave.

It's highly likely that the managerial odds are changing based on you lot throwing up names in this thread and sticking bets on people because I doubt many other people give a shit.

As an experiment, we should all go and put a bet on George Osborne being our next manager tomorrow.

Spill the beans. You only want to see Billy back. :-)

Good call. She could bring in the rest of the Black Eyed Peas as her backroom staff

Each to their own i guess. Far too fake-tan sexed-up pouty for my liking. Give me Rachel Riley any day.
