Sheffield United could learn whether John Brayford, the former Cardiff City and Derby County defender, will miss the start of next season within 24 hours, writes James Shield.

Brayford was scheduled to undergo further tests on his injured knee last night after being forced to watch the conclusion of their League One play-off semi-final against Swindon Town from the stands.

You have 2 in each knee - Anterior & Posterior. I think the ACL tend to be the ones that need sorting more often. When Pierluigi Casiraghi did his ligaments playing for Chelsea, both went, effectively ending his career

Very true, just the way that it read was that the lot had gone, I'm inclined to think that Sharrowblade meant that it was his cruciate, which as you say tends to refer to the ACL as its a more well known injury thanks to the likes of Gazza, Owen and then our very own Kabba, Cuvelier, Diego and Morgs

If it's the PCL or the medial ligaments it'll much less.

ACL will be a year minimum
 
No statement from the club about whether it's a ligament injury at all.

Not an expert but...ACL used to end careers but there's been a lot of advances in this area. It's what Gazza did in that FA Cup game before he went to Italy isn't it?

One concern is that he played on for a while after the injury which may have made any problems worse. Would that have been possible with ligament damage? They tend to be extremely painful (did my ankle once and passed out) and blow up like a purple balloon.

Anyway it's all speculation.

Did my PCL years ago. Kept me out of football for a whole season, but as said elsewhere these injuries are dealt with much better and shorter time out.
 
If it was his ACL I very much doubt he would have been able to walk off of the pitch never mind carry on until half time. He may have torn it in some way but can't see a full rupture ( from own experience) hopefully just a tweak, will be a big player next season....at RB

I think i remember Morgs playing on for a bit after sustaining the knee injury that ended his career.
 
They are going to operate to remove his beard.
 
As I understand it, he's got to have his leg in a protective brace for at least four months.

Make no mistake. Its a serious injury, and given the timescale of these type of injuries, can't see him being rushed back.

I doubt he will play at all next season.:(

Is it ACL, do you know or something else ?

A terrible blow for Bray, the club and supporters.

I can see why Clough got wound up in the interview and introduced the subject without fully explaining what the diagnosis was. He's obviously very upset.
 
Again it's all speculation but given the nature of ACL injuries (Gazza, Michael Owen are the two that spring to mind) I'd be very surprised if it is that.

My understanding is that the ACL is basically part of a cabling system which means you can balance poles one on top of the other - or the other two (your thigh bone on your shins) - with some rigidity. It has to be very strong and it's very serious and unstable if it breaks. And the affected area is extremely inflamed and very colourful. Brayford played on. I can't see that it's ACL.

Also ACL tends to be a twisting injury. Wasn't Brayford's an impact? I didn't see it.

More worrying for him, and us, I think is the fact that, as someone pointed out, Morgs played on with the injury that ended his career - don't know the details of that one though. Still, medical advances and player care mean he's got as good a chance as anyone's ever had.

It's a terrible blow for the lad and club and we all hope it's not a worst case scenario..however, due to Nigel's transfer policy we're awash with fullbacks surely able to deputise...leaving Nigel to concentrate on those two vital centre half's...
 
Brayford has tweeted to say he is gutted but glad that if it was to happen it was in Blades shirt with his fellow players, staff and supporters.
 
I'd be interested to know which ligament it was as I can't really see it being the ACL based on that limited and sketchy info.

If it was a ruptured ACL then it would be most likely that he'd need reconstructive surgery, likely time out is around 1 year. The way he played on for 10+ minutes and was just hobbling suggests that the ACL hadnt ruptured, but doesn't rule out a tear.

My limited knowledge and major experience would suggest that it's not the ACL which is damaged.

The ACL provides the most stability as it controls the knee during forward bending and therefore sees the largest forces. The forces on other ligaments is probably not as high and and a tear rather than a rupture is then manageable without surgery.

It's possible to play sport without an ACL. ive read of cases with retired Rugby League players suffering with knee stability in retirement. When they've done scans/ arthroscopy the ACL has completely disintegrated and almost absorbed into the knee.

The theory being that they probably ruptured their ACL in their early career and because of the muscle mass and strength around the knee the muscles acted to stabilise the knee. It's only once the muscle wastes through age and reduced activity that they then get the problems and pain.
