Anyone remember the one in the late 70’s winning up there. Was sat on my front door step listening on the radio. The score that day was so untypical of the blades

I was there. !! Friendly Geordies were silent after 20 minutes . As a 15 year old my mate and I must have been making quite a noise. Tolerant respect from locals. But that was a very long time ago. Then on to Elland Road.

I did manage to go to Elland Rd

I was a paper boy at the time and managed to go. I have it in mind that we were the only team to go through that day. The rest had to replay (or maybe my memory is not what it was). I managed all three semis too.

When I was a kid I used to play a game called logacta. It was a football based board game with dice.

It was totally based on chance. Sheffield United always won the European cup when I played it - go figure.

This is just the sort of score I used to get all the time

April 1979. Won 3-1
Yes, I was there. From memory, we had 4 shots at goal all game and they all went in but one was disallowed for offside. I think Peter Withe scored for them.

For those of my generation , the 1961 win at Newcastle has to be in the top 5 Blades watching experiences for anyone fortunate enough to have been there and I have seen it estimated that there were around 18,000 of us .

Apart from the result , the atmosphere both inside the ground and on the train back to Sheffield was such that you had to be there to appreciate how extraordinary they both were .

My old man suffered from a debilitating illness for as long as I knew him but I never saw him look as happy as he did that day .

Saw Hodgy in his last year for us and he made many errors in the first 5 months of the 1970-71 season so unfair for me to judge as I hadnt seen Hodgy at his peak

I saw his last league match for us , a 2-1 away defeat against a struggling Bolton side who we were expected to beat and it was pitiful to watch .

This truly great goalkeeper who had served us so well for so long let in two soft goals and dropped just about everything that came his way , being reduced to scrambling about in the box on his hands and knees trying to retrieve them .

Shortly after , I also saw John Hope's debut in a 2-1 win away against a very decent Oxford side and came away knowing that our season was back on track and believing that we would be promoted , which we were in what was probably the most memorable ending to a season I have ever experienced .

Saw Hodgy and Hendo, Hodgy all day long.

Just curious, did you see Hodgy at 21 or later in his career?? I don't think you can really make judgements between 2 keepers until they have both finished their respective careers

I'm sure I read somewhere that we wore some odd colours on that day, tangerine shirts or something.... Silent Blade , help me out here!
Yes we did and Newcastle wore all white shirts. That was due to the strange rules for FA Cup matches when it came to colour clashes. Saw a photo of the match in the Newcastle v Blades programme in 2000 (FA Cup)

I went to both games. After the Bolton game my dad said we shouldnt bother to go to away games for a while. We werent planning to go to Oxford but when the shock transfer of John Tudor was reported in the papers I felt despair so my dad decided that we go to Oxford to see the debuts of Hope and Hockey to cheer me up.

I’m afraid that I only saw Hodgy in the last couple of years playing, but what I do remember noticing is that on his Lane debut, Hope was throwing the ball further than I’d seen Hodgkinson kick it.

Hodgkinson v Henderson?
They are the 2 keepers I have most enjoyed watching, but they are about as different as is possible. I started going to matches as Hodgy was replacing Burgin, and over a long career, he was a magnificent servant of the club, athletic, courageous, reliable, and a real nice bloke as well. I was lucky enough to have him (and Gerry Summers) come to coach our school team for a few sessions, and so had Hodgy to myself for a short while. He came across incredibly well, and the highlight of my 'goalkeeping career' (which was mediocre at best) was to have him behind the goal for a couple of brief practice matches, and have him praise a couple of saves I made. One of them was quite good, or so I thought, but the dive was probably exaggerated!
Henderson is only 2 years into his career with us, but seems in a totally different way determined, dedicated, and someone who loves being involved in football and being with people who love football. He probably is the more talented, but goal-keeping is a precarious business. In my view he has the potential to have an even better career than Hodgy. But they both have contributed enormously to the pleasure of being on Kop at the Lane.

Hodgkinson v Henderson?
I know owd'uns, me included these days always look back with rose tinted gigs but me dad says Hodgy was brilliant at his peak.
He also says Jimmy Hagan was the best ever & there should be a statue of him in the car park (instead of a former Wendy player/supporter).

As a kid I missed most of what was probably TC's best seasons living abroad. As a result I always look back more fondly on Geoff Salmons. Badger & Salmons were my heros & it broke my heart when Blades sold the latter to Stoke.

Having time on my hands 'self defecating' & now my juices are flowing (not through self defecation)... , I came across this information on me dad's hero:

'After the war, Hagan initially refused to re-sign for United, missing the first four games of the 1946–47 season. Having got a job as a trainee chartered surveyor he only rejoined the team on a part-time basis. His solitary England cap came in a 0–0 draw against Denmark in Copenhagen on 26 September 1948.[7]

He continued to play for United until 1958, as captain between 1946 and 1949, despite United accepting what would have been a British record transfer fee of £32,500 from Wednesday in February 1951. Hagan rejected the transfer and Wednesday were relegated to the Second Division.'

How times change,:
Trainee Charted Surveyor v Professional Footballer was a big decision!!
How times have not changed (this year aside): Blades board agreed a record breaking fee to sell their best player Jimmy Hagan to (of all f##kin sides SWFC).

That's why they brought in John Hope who for a time was talked of as a future England keeper.

When I first read this thread I thought I had the programme for this match, turns out I don’t, it was the Newcastle V Wolves semi from ten years earlier, 10th March 1951, played at the sty.

From the back page scribbling, we were beating Bury away 1-0 at half time that day, no idea if this is correct or what the final score was.

Bert was also at that game, his memories are more of the fighting behind the goal where Bert and the Unitedites were stationed which, inexplicably was where the Bolton hooligans also liked to stand.

One hell of a side, that
That 11 trips off the tongue as easily now as it did then. Same 11, week in week out, picked itself. I recall being pissed off we'd let Kevin Lewis go to Liverpool though. Mind you, I went to all the Wendy matches with my mates too so I can reel off the legendary Owls 11 too (tin hat on....exit stage left at Pace).
