dont suppose anyone noticed how........how can I put this....fit, ripped, hench....or whatever the phrase is these days, that the Newcastle players looked. ALL of them had huge shoulders, small waists and we just looked like a pub team.
Anyone else notice this....Linz....please back me up on this ........ :)

That's just Premier League athleticism. It was the same when we played Spurs. The physical difference between players is noticeable.

It's a chicken and egg thing though. Are they playing there because they're stronger, or are they stronger because of the higher quality of training and dietary advice, or is it a combination of both?

Absolutely spot on (well maybe the pub team bit is going too far...). NA will back you up on this. I have heard in various interviews comments such as 'some players seem to have had better holidays than others'. Also I am sure he said maybe in the Q&A that he was a bit disappointed with some of the players condition. I think he then back tracked later and said he was referring to injuries.

Technically as league 1 players I can understand being not as good as the Premier Players but when it comes to being overweight and out of condition I think this is inexcusable. They are professional athletes, and to return to pre season overweight? What are they playing at.

I've been too a couple of the friendlies and its not hard to see which players have worked at their fitness and those that are simply overweight.

Bit of both and self discipline. My guess is Premier League, out of condition and overweight, you wouldn't get a look in, not that you would be even there in the first place. League 1 well the evidence is there for all to see.

Baxter looked every inch the professional footballer yesterday.

Maybe that 'spiked' drink was exactly the shock he needed to get himself sorted out.

Nah, they all just have them fitted shirts like the rugby boys.
Put Baxter in one and he'll look like johnny wilkinson.

Precisely. He's come back Slimmer, fitter and stronger which has made him quicker and will inevitably improve his game. Similar with Higdon in fact who has noticeably lost weight and Che has bulked up a bit as well which was needed as he was lightweight last season. Good signs!

He was great yesterday Jose.

Long looks beefy as well, which he needed to be. Certainly his make or break season this.

This is why I never had much time for this view that sprung up after our good cup runs that we have a team more suited to the Championship than the PL.

the higher up you go, the bigger and stronger and fitter the players are.

I think the transformation of Kyle Walker suggests that once the players reach that level it's then that the resources available and the approach taken kick in and the physique is shaped.

Though of course there is still some chicken and egg.

I think ecstasy was originally synthesized and marketed as a slimming drug. (And Heroin was a cough medicine.)

Started well but arrogant, lazy, and sometimes blind passes conceded possession .ore than once. He's very talented but not as very talented as he thinks he is.

You need to be an athlete and a footballer nowadays to play at the top level. I remember being in the premier league and even players like Giggs and Rooney who don't look particularly "big" were in much better shape than most of our players.

Even flair players now have to be physically fit, can you see a place for Hartson, Merson or Le Tissier in this age of premier league football? Messi is the exception as he's small but I bet he is strong as an Ox and takes some shoving off the ball.

The lower down the leagues you go the more varied shapes and sizes of players you see. I remember walking into a hotel in Durham once and the West Brom team were staying as they were playing Sunderland the next day. All of them were 6ft plus and built like brick walls, even Odemwingie, who looks fairly slight relative to others.

Roy Hodgson had a good few drinks but his speech impediment meant I couldn't tell if he can hack it or not.

What I don't really get is how much fitter that they can get. It's not as though the players at SUFC are doing anything other than train and play football. Why can't our fitness coaches get the players to the same level of fitness as those in the Premier league?

Natural athleticism is not something that can be trained into someone. The fact is the top level players are from the top of the gene pool in terms of physical fitness. Look at the U.S.A and the NFL for a case in point. They pick an athlete and train the sport into them.

Alot of it is natural athleticism, then it's down to the individual player's mentality in my opinion. The speed of the top league is ridiculous in comparison to our level.

I think some of it is natural athleticsm but I also think they must do lots of upper body weight training as all of them had huge shoulders..

But the NFL is different, as players have specific jobs, you could find the fastest kid and then tell him that he is going to be a wide receiver. He doesn't have to worry about defence or anything else just running fast and catching the ball. You couldn't do the same in football and say to him that he will be a winger, otherwise Man Utd would have signed Usain Bolt whenh e trained with them last year.

There was a certain... beefy... quality that was certainly aesthetically pleasing.

See also: Sammon's chunky arms.

Scoogs, bless him, looked like he'd asked the bigger boys if he could play before his Mam called him in for tea.

Is it just me or did McNulty look like he'd been busy at the pie shop (sorry deep fried mars bars) on his summer hols?

I think it's just his body shape. Some are just built stockily, look at Rooney with the top dieticians, top trainers, state of the art facilities - still looks like a brit abroad.

I heard (confidentially like..) from someone who had access to the away dressing room, that the Toon players were, (ahem), all usefully large in the appendage area too ! ;) Some lucky buggers have it all eh!
