I was a bit surprised that Cranie wasn't kept on, as he's done really well whenever he's played. But Wilder must be wanting someone that offers a little bit more. I think these may be among the required attributes:

  • Ability to play central midfield. This enables Wilder to switch formations without making substitutions. Maybe this is the main reason for letting Cranie go.
  • Past experience as right back. Mainly as that could suggest the player has the mobility to bomb forward like Basham does.
  • Pace. There are some fast strikers in the PL, and some extra pace could be useful.
  • Height. Our midifelders aren't tall, and when Cranie replaced Basham and Stevens was at LCB we lacked height/aerial ability in general.
  • Comfortable in possession. All our players should be.

Any suggestions of someone who ticks all boxes?

As you'll be aware Bergen, there'll be any number of reasons why CW decided to release Cranie. I agree, he was very competent when called upon, but Chris works with the players on a daily basis so will know far more than any of us who make judgements from a safe distance.

One thing I think we can guarantee, Wilder and his team will work diligently in researching who's available.

Off top of my head:
Ajayi
Tuanzebe
Holgate
Moore

more than likely though they will be expensive whoever we do go for or maybe Wilder will give Graham a chance

What about Jack Stacey from Luton, he’s their player of the season. Scored a few and chips in with assists. He’s a right back who can play right midfield so could cover Bash or Baldock position and will be fine doing the overlapping centre back.

What about Reece Oxford?

Seems, for some reason to not fit at Wedt Ham.

Has acquired some good experience so far.

Right I don’t want to be horrible. But if you rate Ajayi as premiership quality you need to never go to a football stadium again.

He was by far the worst player I’ve seen at BDTBL for many many years.

If they do bring someone in there he will have to be some player. Basham is more than good enough for PL football in my opinion and should keep hold of that shirt for now. We do need depth and competition though.

For me the release of Cranie, gives a strong signal that CWAK are looking to upgrade in the RCB position. If you're happy with Bash there, Cranie was a capable cover, so to me it says Bash will be a cover player next season, especially as he can do that in several different positions.

There is an ex player, rumoured to be leaving his PL club, that ticks EVERY box there Bergen.

Can’t quite pronounce his name though ;).

UTB

And Bash gave Wilder food for thought when he was caught knapping by Shawcross for the Potters second goal, you will have to wide awake in the Prem or get punished like that every game.

Ajayi looked an awful player at the lane. I have only seen him on Tv other than that. League one at best is where he should be

They were on the piss all week a few were off the pace.

Bash has been amazing, but I just think Wilder wants to match up with the quality and ability on the other side of the pitch. What we need is a clone of magic hat with a right foot. :)

RCB/RWB is the key area for an upgrade, along with holding midfielder, AM & striker. I would be happy with 5 quality signings. Haven’t got a clue who will be coming in, but it will be a fascinating summer.
