NEW: Ian 'Jock' Bryson interview

Seen a few players targeted over the years, as we all have, but still remember the hammering three or four Huddersfield players gave him during an away game

One of the hardest working players I ever saw. Some games he literally ran his blood to water. And to be fair to him, he was a very decent player who had a great cross on him. Deane was the lucky recipient of some of the delightful crosses knocked in the box from Jock.

I think he cost us £40k from Kilmarnock. What a buy. And when you consider Deane cost £30k... He could spot a bargain in the transfer market could Bassett.

Remember Jock scoring a last minute penalty away at the Pit Dwellers (Barnsley) to win it for us in a bad tempered derby game. Right in front of the packed away end on a cold Tuesday night. Took some bottle taking that penalty but Jock tucked it away much to our delight. Cheers Jock. 👍😊

Another brilliant interview. Loved jock. Very under rated. I see he’s an ambassador at Preston and seem to remember he dropped into centre mid and was very well regarded by them.
I hope he has the 100 years 100 goals video coz he scored some crackers

One of my favourite players. I remember that Northampton game when he scored twice very well. I couldn't believe how much he won in the air especially for a winger. If you look back at the goals he scored, it's amazing how many were headers. Very under-rated.

I think my favourite goal of his though was against Luton at home just after that great run of 7 wins in 1991. The ball came to him just outside near the corner of the box and he fooled one of their players by switching feet and hit a sweet shot into the far top corner.

Loved old “Peabo” as we used to call him - no social media around in those days to know the correct nickname!

He scored an absolute blinder at Wembley for them. About 1m 30s in.

Luton was my first ever game, 30th Mar 91. Bryson's goal would have been the first goal I ever saw live, as we arrived late and missed Luton's opener.

That was the 6th straight home win in the top flight, don't suppose I will see that again, all downhill from there! :)

Very much agree. He wasn’t a flair player with silky skills, quite a basic player really, hence why he didn’t play for Scotland but he had a great cross to set up Brian Deane (who was brilliant at headers). he was also humble, had a great attitude, very consistent and worked so hard for the team.

Like several of the United players under Bassett he played like he cared and supported the Blades, hence he was highly regarded and appreciated by our fans.

Changing the subject slightly I remember when Bassett first joined us he brought in 2 wingers, Ian Bryson and Alan Roberts.
Roberts really stood out as a skilful, wizard of the dribble type player. In a cup game we beat Newcastle 3-0 with Roberts running rampant.
He only played 1 season for us in league 1 and him and Agana were probably our best players, then I think Bassett allowed him to leave for personal reasons
and then I think he retired from football when he was young, due to injury.

Does anyone know the situation with Alan Roberts?
It’s hard to believe but he’s still one of the best wingers I’ve ever seen play for us.

I believe he is one of the God Squad and became a member of the clergy. Sure I read that about him somewhere. Was a strange old player was Roberts, no little skill but looked like he had just fallen out of the back of a skip with his unkempt appearance. Small but effective. Fell out of love with football apparently (I don't think he was a big advocate of the type of football Bassett had United playing at the time) after going back to the North East and as mentioned joined up with the church. After he had been playing regularly at the Cathedral of football I can only assume that he thought working his way up to becoming Archbishop of Canterbury was the only way up for him from there.

Loved that line….made me laugh.
Yes he was small, with quick feet and close control…still remember the night match, 3-0 win home to Newcastle in the cup. Roberts was brilliant that night.

I also remember his departure at Sheff United seemed sudden and mysterious.
He was one of our best players, then all of a sudden the club announced he‘s been allowed to leave for personal reasons.
Imagine that happening now. Then he just seemed to disappear from the game.
His “falling out of love with football” theory makes sense.

I remember he didn't like the style of play at United and that's why he left. Which I find odd as there was plenty of wing play under Bassett.

Roberts left, but to our benefit. Peter Duffield then played in his position, and was a better player with a keen eye for goal. Also a good penalty taker. Broke his leg which effectively stopped him getting further up the leagues.

Same path that Alan Comfort for Boro took at about the same time (remember he scored against us in the 3-3 draw). Didn't Roberts play for Lincoln briefly?

The Bryson goal away at Sunderland was an important one. Such a consistent and reliable player.

Was on the kop for the northampton game, one of the goals he scored was awesome, half volley which he somehow kept down. The still of him when he struck the ball was on the cover of a computer game i remember. Cant remember what game it was.

Wasn’t Paul Wood from around that era too ? He was excellent at Filbert Street on “ Blades up Pigs down “ Saturday !

Signed a bit later during the second promotion season and effectively came in with the money for John Francis who went to Burnley. We also signed Billy Whitehurst around that time. Wood had scored earlier in the season against us in the mad 5-4 game.

Wood did well for us and offered another wide option with Duffield out with the broken leg but never did it in the first division, I think Mitch Ward actually ended up being picked in his place.

But yes he scored at Filbert Street that famous sunny May day!!
