If the photo of the whiteboard from the board meeting has been interpreted correctly, then we are looking at replacements for Henderson, Basham, and Norwood as our future transfer activity.

Who do you think would be the best fits we could get if the rest of the team stays the same?

Not a replacement for Henderson, just a permanent signing.

Randolph in goal. Not sure about Bash, maybe Rodon, and possibly Lunny could do the Norwood role, allowing for a more creative addition.

I think replacing Norwood is the biggest challenge. In our system he's a defensive midfielder who screens the back three but also starts moves, dictates the tempo, and has an exceptional range of passing. He's not bad at set pieces, too. So a replacement would need all that plus better pace and athleticism and perhaps be more consistent/less prone to sloppy turnovers of possession in our half. No one jumps to mind for me but I think we can say for sure they wouldn't be cheap.

Henderson = Henderson/Etheridge
Basham = Chambers/Dier
Norwood = Sander Berge/Tyler Adams (wildcard Xhaka?)

I agree, but not to state the bleeding obvious, why??!!

I get that Deano may be in demand (Bayern Munich in the paper this morning), Bash is a legend but getting on, but why would Norwood need replacing??

Which leads me to think it's not about replacing them as such (Deano maybe) but backup/competition

Can you not remember Lundstram in the Coutts / Norwood role?
I can, but based on that we wouldn't have him anywhere near the team would we. You was wrong, I was wrong, we were all wrong.
Playing in the Norwood position is his natural role, it's where he played at Oxford, it's where he caught Chris Wilder's eye. I'm convinced that the Lunny we see now, can play that role, maybe not quite the passing range of Norwood, but better defensively.

That player you describe would be extremely expensive.

Norwood is in the Top 10 for most stats categories in the league in his position so not sure i'd be looking at him as a priority although every single player could be improved upon with the right money.

I think those are some cracking picks

except for the Wildcard - as the only thing I agree with the foam-mouthed rabid dogs that are Arsenal fans about, is that Xhaka is shite.

I'm really sorry but i literally couldn't disagree more.

We've all seen him in that position and it isn't good at all whereas now, IMO, he has found his perfect role.

Maybe so but he was great at BMG prior to going to Arsenal plus in the last 4/5 years who have Arsenal bought and improved? I can’t think of any.

Jonjo Shelvey. Shame he’s not much of an improvement, and by many accounts, a twat.

Probably not even worth trying to replace Norwood to be honest and I'm hardly his biggest fan.

We can get a better athlete but does he communicate, anticipate and know the system as well? Not to mention the technical stuff. How long would it take someone else to gel at the very centre of the team?

Norwood's only 28 too. That's not old for his type at all. He doesn't have any athleticism to lose. He'll improve.

I would take hendo as first choice. (Think we may have an option on him at the end of the season. Randolph as an alternative. Good keeper and Irish.

RCB I would be looking at Chambers as first choice as he could cover CDM too. I think we may go in for Lenihan from Blackburn again if not. Remember when we came up from League One and they quoted £5million for him? That wouldn’t be out of our reach any more.

I really don’t know about a replacement for Norwood. As people have already stated, it’s gonna be a lot of money to improve on him and he already has the system nailed down. Rather than spending £25 million on someone, perhaps we could look at someone like Brannigan at Oxford, sit on him for 18 months and get him up to speed before he replaces a then 30 year old Norwood? Not sure there is an easy answer to it.

Why do people assume we're after replacements?

The club might just want backup for them. Hendo apart, we don't really have adequate backup for Norwood or any player similar to Basham, so if they got injured what would United do?

F*ck me that board has been looked into way too much. We're probably looking for cover for Bash, cover for Norwood as Besic is currently this and he rubbish so won't be here next season.

Of course we've got to look at an alternative for Henderson if we're planning long term. As soon as he makes his England debut his stock rises dramatically. Look at Butland Stoke want a ridiculous price for him, even though he's error prone its his CV that increases the price.

He was being linked with Liverpool and Napoli the other day. Think that would put us firmly out the running.

The whiteboard was just PA’s fantasy football team. He’d just been explaining to CW that Lundstram is classed as a defender and is getting loads of points.
