I was a bit concerned at first but reading this, it looks fairly decent. May give us the chance of Man City's young guns or Liverpool's etc. At the lane.

From OS..

The EFL has confirmed the format of the EFL Trophy 2016/17 which, for the first time, will include 16 invited teams from clubs with Category One Academies.

A total of 64 clubs will compete in the competition beginning with 16 groups of four teams, each of which will include at least one club from each of Leagues One and Two, along with one invited team. The top two sides in each group will then go into a knockout stage that will culminate in a showpiece final at Wembley Stadium on April 2.

The new look competition will also have an enhanced prize fund with an expected £1.95m being up for grabs, including £10,000 per win and £5,000 per draw during the Group Stage and £100,000 for the eventual winner.

The first 16 clubs with Category One Academies that have been invited to take part in the EFL Trophy 2016/17 are Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United.

EFL Chief Executive, Shaun Harvey said: "The new format is intended to rejuvenate this competition and also assist the development of the very best young players in English football. This will help us deliver more and better home grown players which will deliver benefits to the national team and domestic league football at all levels.

"I believe this is the right time to pilot these changes to the EFL Trophy, which we will review at the end of the 2016/17 season following discussions with our clubs and having consulted with the other football bodies and supporter organisations."

A Premier League spokesman said: "The overriding aim of the Elite Player Performance Plan across the Premier League and English Football League is to produce more and better home grown players capable of performing at first team and international levels.

"Participation for a selection of Premier League clubs' teams to take part in the EFL Trophy is an important part of a range developments that both we and the EFL believe will help young, talented players progress physically and mentally on top of the technical aspect of their game developed in the Academy system.

"It is a progressive move by both leagues; one that we welcome."

So when Arsenal's youth turn up and whack us 6-0 it won't upset the season at all.

Are you thick ?

It's got to be the thin edge of the wedge for some nefarious plan the Fa has dreamed up to help the Prem, gain more control.

innit

I believe Tottenham and Man Utd have already pulled out and Man City are thinking about it too amongst some others. So not sure your initial point stands about the best teams youths anyway tbh.

At this rate we'll be playing Wednesday's reserves, wonderful.

Having read it again. The "PL" club could play 5 first reamers.

I.e.

Hart
Zabaletta Youngster Kompany Youngster
Yaya Toure
Youngster youngster youngster
Youngster
Aguero
But then, it gets worse when you realise Patrick Roberts, Iheanacho etc. Are all under 21 so could be a "youngster".

Nah, fuck that shit

Ridiculous idea. Apparently quite a few PL teams have rejected the invitation although there's been nothing official.

Anyone who attends this shit wants their heads testing in my book. Hope some sort of boycott is sorted out
This this and this again.

I wish I could like it more than once. In fact I'm going to unlike just so I can.

every team should refuse to participate. Its disrespectfull to all the football league teams. I can see alot of the smaller clubs wanting to do this for the money from the gates but sadly this sort of thing is whats ultimatly going to contribute to the death of tthese clubs.

agree but the rules don't allow us.If we could play who we wanted we should chuck 11 fans out to have a kick around.

Penalty shootout idea is shocking. Its something we laugh at Americans for. But reading the green un app which is fantastic that its turning into a disaster & just assumed they jump at the chance but the big 6 clubs either dont want to, or are hesitant too

Spurs & Chelsea - are concerned about clashes during international breaks.
Arsenal - are happy number of fixtures played by their youth teams.
Manchester United & Liverpool - are still weighing up their options & believed to decline
Manchester City - have made a decision but are not prepared to make it public.

Playing reserve and youth teams demeans us and every other League One and Two club.

It is the thin end of the wedge in relation to reducing a structure containing vibrant, independent clubs to vassal status, like the "minor leagues' in Baseball and Hockey in North America. It must be fought.

Shame on United for agreeing to this.

As far as I'm concerned, these games are not taking place. I have no interest in them whatsoever.

Another article in The Star this morning suggesting Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham have all declined the invitation to enter a team.

What a farce this is becoming. I can just see the groups being drawn and Sheffield United vs Sheffield Wednesday B being a one of the games because they've run out of teams to invite. What a fucking embarrassment that would be.

It's for youngsters and their development, but they only have to play 5 of them...

Saved me a few quid for next season at least.

Are we allowed to reject the bloody invitation as well?

I've wondered the same every season we've taken part, can't we just decline taking part. At least it would avoid the small humiliation of losing a penalty shoot out at Fleetwood. In fact, more fool me for having made the journey :-)
