Did we have a choice in the matter? Thought it was just pushed on us, whether we liked it or not.....

Seems that the PL teams have a choice as they're invited, we don't as its imposed on us.

We need to play a team of kids (U16's should do) and take the GBP 5,000 each round (hopefully just the one). The club can offer free tickets and let people know in advance that we're playing to win, but the oldest player will be 15.

You would think that some confirmation from the invited clubs would have been sought before announcing this. Whoever's project it is wants sacking for that alone.

Quick question - if we'd stayed up in the Prem, were a Stoke, had an appropriate academy etc would you want us to play in it as one of the teams lording it in the Prem?

Some are speaking as if it's insulting to us. I wouldn't support it because it's insulting to the football pyramid which is gradually being squashed and should be treasured. I shan't be attending this tournament.

As for helping the development of English players..... Are the Prem academies still stocked with European talent over English talent?

Yes, the teams voted to do it. Some teams (eg Wimbledon and Portsmouth) announced they voted against. United have not publicly said how they cast their vote. If they voted for it, shame on them.

Exactly, you'd have thought that it would have been a good idea for everyone to get together and agree the format before they went ahead with the big announcement.

The Football League (EFL or whatever they are calling themselves nowadays) comes out with no credit whatsoever.

The main sticking point for the likes of Liverpool appears to be the venue, none of them wanted to play their matches on their 1st Team ground. Liverpool weren't keen to play fixtures at Anfield, ......but that's the carrot being dangled by the Football League at the L1 and L2 supporters, they were pinning their hopes on those supporters having 'a day out' at a Premier League Ground.

The prospect of Lower Division clubs playing Liverpool Reserves at the home of Bootle or Marine doesn't quite have the same appeal.

I was a bit concerned at first but reading this, it looks fairly decent. May give us the chance of Man City's young guns or Liverpool's etc. At the lane.

From OS..

The EFL has confirmed the format of the EFL Trophy 2016/17 which, for the first time, will include 16 invited teams from clubs with Category One Academies.

A total of 64 clubs will compete in the competition beginning with 16 groups of four teams, each of which will include at least one club from each of Leagues One and Two, along with one invited team. The top two sides in each group will then go into a knockout stage that will culminate in a showpiece final at Wembley Stadium on April 2.

The new look competition will also have an enhanced prize fund with an expected £1.95m being up for grabs, including £10,000 per win and £5,000 per draw during the Group Stage and £100,000 for the eventual winner.

The first 16 clubs with Category One Academies that have been invited to take part in the EFL Trophy 2016/17 are Arsenal, Chelsea, Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Middlesbrough, Newcastle United, Southampton, Stoke City, Sunderland, Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur, West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United.

EFL Chief Executive, Shaun Harvey said: "The new format is intended to rejuvenate this competition and also assist the development of the very best young players in English football. This will help us deliver more and better home grown players which will deliver benefits to the national team and domestic league football at all levels.

"I believe this is the right time to pilot these changes to the EFL Trophy, which we will review at the end of the 2016/17 season following discussions with our clubs and having consulted with the other football bodies and supporter organisations."

A Premier League spokesman said: "The overriding aim of the Elite Player Performance Plan across the Premier League and English Football League is to produce more and better home grown players capable of performing at first team and international levels.

"Participation for a selection of Premier League clubs' teams to take part in the EFL Trophy is an important part of a range developments that both we and the EFL believe will help young, talented players progress physically and mentally on top of the technical aspect of their game developed in the Academy system.

"It is a progressive move by both leagues; one that we welcome."

It's shit. Fuck them and the horse they rode in on. Only an utter prick would sign up for this as a good thing.

Rearrange the words:

Edge, thin, end, the, of.

It's no coincidence the FL (sorry, 'EFL') announced a streamlined league of 5 x 20 divisions.

That is 100 clubs as against today's 92.

So would the best 8 clubs in non league get promoted? Not a chance.

Come on down Manyoo B, Manyoo C, Citeh B, Arse B etc etc etc

The Premier League aren't content with changing academy transfer rules in their favour, they want something else for the few crumbs that they chuck down from the table. It will be wrapped up as 'good for the England team' of course, but we all know that all the top academys are stuffed full of 15 year old Africans and the like.

Football is our great game but the administrators are scum from top to bottom. Be it the Premier League ("unfair on the CheatinAmmers fans"), or FIFA/UEFA with their snorts in the trough, they are all in it for what they can get.

The beautiful game? Don't make me laugh.

No shortage of pricks in the football world. The only industry where the ratio would be higher is Human Resources.

Wait a minute isn't the 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 2 for a penalty shoot out triumph the same as the American League operated back in't day?

Was this post from yesterday? if so where has mattbianco1 been for the last 3 months?!

It was "Confirmed" this week.

SUFC must've been in the same boat as me as they announced it on Wednesday - http://www.sufc.co.uk/news/article/2016-17/sheffield-untied-efl-trophy-3171065.aspx

The Star ran a story on it yesterday - http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/foot...y-sides-turn-down-efl-trophy-invite-1-8003358

So i can only close with a final statement of - Don't be a fucking prick!
