Nude eel for Leon?............ :tumbleweed:

Truth be told, I thought we'd loan him out 6 months into him signing for us. Never been more positively surprised by a player.

Duffy is the big one. What he brings to us is very hard to replace.

Too true TD he’s the supply line for a lot of the ammo , kept the midfield ticking also in the other 2 amigos absence

Don’t understand why people are worrying about Leon’s age. He looks to be the fittest player in our squad - I’d like to see the kms run stats - and the injuries he gets seem to be impact injuries not soft tissue. He’ll still be running at 35.

Also, if this drives him on to play as well in the second half of the season and take us up then it is small change.

Leon, Flecky, Bash and JOC are our beating heart at present - they create the space for others to work.

For me -
Leon is Magic

Great bit of management yet again as it’s a huge carrot for other players to improve performances and earn more money. Sends out a great message that we’ve done it with 5 recently so prove yourself and this is what you get.

Lets say he's now on £15k per week.
That's assuming we're upping people's wages in 5k segments, this is Sheffield United!
He came from Bury so maybe he was on 3k /week there, what would it take to tempt him? How about another 1k/week and 100k promotion bonus? So that'd be 4k /week, tie him down for another 2 years? First there's the bonus of same wages for another 2 years (let's face it at that age they are normally falling) so maybe it was just an extension but if it was an increase I'd say anything from £200-£1,000/week, he might be on 5k/week wouldn't imagine it's much more (but there will be bonuses).

He's signed till 2020. My projection was that in a year or two's time and if we're not heading to the Prem the club will realise they've got an unaffordable player in the ranks and will renegotiate his contract. As with the three players I mentioned, the only way they would be able to make this attractive to an ageing player would be by extending his contract on a reduced wage.

So, this will take us to around 2022 when he will be 37.

But isn’t this all based on your ‘projection’ that he’s now on £15k per week, which might be way off the mark. According to a Wilder he could earn more playing somewhere else but he wants to carry on here

Contract extensions like this serve a number of purposes. For one it rewards and motivates a player who's a top performer for us. For two it tells other players in the squad that if they produce then they will be similarly rewarded. And for a third it tells other teams they have to come up with silly money to even try and tempt him or us into a sale.

We signed the guy from Bury for 100k if that. He'll have been on peanuts relative to the job he's now doing and it's the sensible thing to do to give him a contract that reflects that. How do you convince the rest of the squad that they ought to see their future at United if we don't reward the league's top scorer with a better wage?

Besides, we all know in the modern game that contracts very often don't get seen out. He may move on again, we may loan him out if he's not playing for us, or maybe he'll retire in 2019. What this does is offer him a financial security that otherwise he may wish to look for elsewhere in the short term. As ever the only bit that matters is the bit we aren't privy to, the value of the contract in £'s. I'm going to guess it's a lot more modest than £15k given the way Wilder talks about it but we don't know.
